That was THE computer to have in college when I went.

Maybe one in 10 dream of owning an RV lol
Because that's me. I'd love to have a solar-charged EV-RV and just van-life life it across North America in my retirement years.

Looks a lot like the Pontiac Aztek to me.

Yeah, I never got that. I mean, I got what they were going for, but the realist in me always sees what goes into a "digital afterlife" as being a copy with no continuity of consciousness. The copy could still miss her husband, though, and I wasn't even thinking about that TBH.
I guess the way I saw it was that "If there is an afterlife, that wouldn't have been 'her' in the machine and she'd have been able to have both.".

Why would we? lol, we wouldn't. But when management says "Help Delores with her app problem", what are you gonna do?

No/Low-Code: Letting people who don't know what they're doing half-ass things poorly without understanding the first thing about it and leaving them completely incapable of fixing it when something goes wrong and then pissing off actual developers when they have to go into the Playskool interface to fix it.

The elderly are still being shoved away in a simulation of their golden years, because I guess that is easier than trying to make room for them in the real world
Yorkie kind of had it bad in the real world her whole life. I can sympathize (though mercifully not directly relate). And I'd much rather San Junipero myself than live out my days in a nursing home. YMMV, obviously.
afterlife" still places everyone's continued existence at the mercy of real-world infrastructure that could decide to just turn them off at any time.
In a lot of ways, Upload is something of a sequel to San Junipero lol

I'm an American, and I agree. It's not so much the American cast, but the tone shift that came along with the move to Netflix.
Brooker via https://movieweb.com/charlie-brooker-responds-to-black-mirror-criticism-netflix/ :
"Arguably the happiest [episode] I've ever written was San Junipero and I just did that off my own back. I was aware we're going on a global platform now, so we've got to make these stories a bit more international. And I wanted to mix it up a bit, as in not just keep doing bleak-a-thons."
That said, "San Junipero" is one of my favorite episodes. Probably because, at the time, it was the rare happy ending.
But at the end of the day, it's still a great show that wonderfully extrapolates current tech trends into varying "10 minutes into the future" dystopian scenarios. Sometimes we need to think everything will work out.

🎵 Pepper Ann, Pepper Ann, much too cool for lousy dates. 🎵

Most of the last mile fiber network is passive (doesn't require active electronics to pass the signal like DOCSIS/cable internet or ADSL).
Cable and DSL typically have the equivalent of UPSs in their neighborhood nodes, but they often go unmaintained.

...yeah. I blocked that whole instance a week or two ago. c/Piracy just isn't worth it. Also, never liked that Unruffled person all that much, and I really don't like them after this ""It's only genocide if I can blame the US - otherwise it's just 'Sparkling Crimes Against Humanity'" 🙄

By Grabthar's Hammer, what a bargain.

That's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, though.
All the stuff I've ordered from Ali is still in use (or in my parts bin awaiting use). e.g. All my smart bulbs are from Ali and were pre-flashed with Tasmota. They're almost 6 years old and going strong.

That might be it. I was guessing since it's not one I subscribe to.

I almost gave up on the dairy free cheese because Daiya was supposed to be the top-tier one. Tasted like vaguely cheese-flavored plastic strips, and I was not a fan. Also refused to melt until it was just below the temperature of the surface of the sun, and when it did, it was like a pile of glue.
On a whim, I bought the Kroger store brand (Simple Truth I think?) and it's pretty damn good. Tastes like cheese, doesn't feel like a mouth full of plastic, melts at a reasonable temperature, the whole works.

Is this picture...what? AI generated? Not that I'm aware of. I just searched for a stock photo of an old lady knitting and this was one of the results. Just grabbed it and added the text.

Maybe this is an old millennial problem, but I've had the same cell phone number for over 20 years. The number would actively link me to whatever. But that doesn't really bother me too much.
What does bother me is that I get enough spam calls as it is. If you don't carefully read the ToS/EULA/privacy policy when giving them your number for "verification", you may be giving them permission for marketing calls or to have your number shared with their affiliates.

Paracord. You can weave it into just about anything. Can probably also weave a water filter.

My work enabled Gemini in Workspace this week...

And this is AFTER I went in and disabled smart features and remove it as an app.

When something still uses micro USB in 2025
Ordered a set of rechargeable AA batteries and charger. They're well reviewed and a decent brand. Specifically wanted the charger since it has USB input rather than 120v so I could top the batteries off from my laptop / power bank as they'll be used for my wireless KB/mouse. The product description only said "USB input" and didn't specify what flavor. Being 2025, you expect USB-C.
Received them today, and they use micro USB input. Now I have to keep yet another cable in my bag. Day mildly ruined.

I know they're the minority of users, but are they ever not on?

Amazon (or any online retailer) needs a "Treat 'yo self" button that one-click orders something from your wish list / saved items.

When you realize your laptop hasn't been plugged in for the last 4 hours you've been working...

Informal Poll: Do you prefer to watch episodes as they're released or binge watch them all after the last episode drops?
I prefer to wait for an entire season to be released and binge watch it in one or two sittings. Most shows only get 10 episodes these days, and they tend to be highly serialized, so there's less catching up to do / remembering what happened last.
Only drawback is I have to avoid spoilers and can't do episode discussions until everyone else has already moved on.

Is there a rhyme or reason to pronouncing the surname "Davies"?
I've heard it pronounced both "Dave-Iss" and "Davey's". I don't hear the names often but I see them regularly and never know how to pronounce them. The only one I'm sure about is Alan Davies (Dave-Iss) because of QI.

Gonna trigger half of Lemmy with this one, but I'm heckin annoyed.

Yes, I'm aware I can curse on the internet - it's not my first day here. I use the exact words I mean to use, and I'm more a fan of the precision F-strike than indiscriminately carpet-bombing the place with "fucks". Stop word-policing me (and others).
Edited to add alt text.
Yeah, this went over about as well as expected. And the irony and hypocrisy of the free speech absolutists coming out of the woodwork to tell us all what we can and can't say is not lost on me.

A Pill for Sleep Apnea Could Be on the Horizon
Experts say that if the new drug gets approved, it may lead to a big shift in how we treat the condition.
For decades, the primary treatment for sleep apnea has been continuous positive airway pressure (or CPAP). Before bed, those with the condition put on a face mask that is connected to a CPAP machine, which keeps the airway open by forcing air into it. The machines are effective, but many find them so noisy, cumbersome or uncomfortable that they end up abandoning them.
Now, a more appealing option may be on the way, according to a news release from Apnimed, a pharmaceutical company focused on treating sleep apnea. On Wednesday, the company announced a second round of positive Phase 3 clinical trial results for a first-of-its-kind oral pill that can be taken just before bedtime to help keep a person’s airway open.

Hands-On With the Minimal Phone: Week 1

Got my Minimal Phone about a week ago. It's definitely a niche device, a cross between a e-reader and a smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard. I'll preface this whole "review" by stating that it's not for everyone. For me, though, it's almost perfect as I don't (nor want) to spend all day staring at my phone, doom scrolling, watching video after video, etc. I just need the basics, love e-ink displays and physical keyboards, and this has me covered.
I put each section into spoilers as I didn't want to throw out a full-on wall of text. If I left anything out or if you have any questions about it, just ask.
Overall / TL;DR
It's a solid, well-built device for people who want to minimize distractions and get down to business. The e-ink display is naturally gorgeous, and the keyboard a joy to use. Other than the lackluster camera, most of my gripes can be solved in future software updates.

I won't spend time going over the specs since they'

Rain barrels are the exact opposite of "Saving it for a rainy day"
(Does it count as a shower thought if it was my lawn getting showered? lol)
I've got a handful of 55-gallon rain barrels and a pump I use for watering the lawn/garden. We've had a pretty rainy summer, so I haven't needed to use them much - in fact, I've had to dump them a few times because of the excess rainfall.
It's been hot and dry all week, so I gave everything a good, deep soak early this morning and had this thought.

For anyone else who has shed a tear today after hearing about Ozzy's passing...

Me when I'm already drunk at the first bar and the group asks if I'm ready to hit up the next one

We're all in our 40s. My spirit may be willing but my body cannot handle bar hopping.
You kinda need to know the scene for this one, so here's the clip:
