Same great Dharma, new Fediverse packaging!

Check out DharmaCurious.org for ramblings on philosophy and the occasional creative writing project!

  • I know, but I'm in a shitty cycle. It started when I was about 15, I'm 32 now. It's just been a constant battle. I don't know what originally caused it, but when I was a teen my hands just got super dry painful. I dealt with it for weeks, and then started using lotion. Have been using it ever since.

  • I hate stereotypes like this. I have all of these, and you're not going to make me pigeon hole myself into choosing one!

  • Oh, God, that's the worst. They're dry AF in the summer, too, but when winter hits, if I don't keep applying lotion every 7 and a half minutes like Cassandra from Doctor Who, then I just leave little snail trails of blood on everything I touch!

  • I used high end android for a long time. The note series, mainly. When I had to step away from that, I switched to LG. I fucking loved LG. They were awesome. Half the price, and damn good.

Since they've stopped, I've had the pixel 6, and an A53. The pixel 6 was glitchy AF, and Google won't allow HDMI over USB, which is a major use case for me, and the A53 just sort of sucks.

I miss high end android. :( but I won't switch to iOS. I hate how locked down it is, and I've never liked the feel of the OS. I'm considering the pixel again, but no HDMI is really fucking with me. :(

  • You were raised in it? I'd love to hear about that. I dabbled in Wicca years ago, as I have in most pagan traditions commonly found in the US. I like learning about religion, but I've never met anyone who was raised in it, only converts.

  • I count for at least 10. Lol. I've made a bunch of alts, between trying to find an instance I vibe with, and then finding more instances I vibe enough with to use when there's downtime. Lol

  • Stay the path, friend. Tng gets better in s3, and great going forward. Those first two seasons can be a bit of a slog.

Also, I was never able to watch TOS until after I became a ride or die Trekkie. Now I love it. Lol.

  • I need more information about your culture, if you're willing. Are you in a western country? Are you actually in danger of being buried in salt? Is salt burial common in your country? In your religion? Is it a legal practice? I have so many questions, and if you're open to answering them, you'd make me very happy. Lol. But if not, I understand.

  • Reminds me of Ferengi. I've used the word, obviously, but I have such a strong association of the word with the way the Ferengi on star trek say it, that even when talking about plumbing or electrical sockets, I feel sort of gross saying the word. It just feels disrespectful. :/

  • Just wait until my father hears about this! Now I'm going home in my 1998 Toyota corola. I only drive it because my parents are trying to teach me what it's like to be one of the poor. They're quite wealthy, you see.

  • It's not really about the tiny amount for an individual, it's a problem when multiplied by the millions upon millions of iPhone users, and because they steer the market, the millions and millions of Android users that will follow.

  • Not just expensive, they're also environmentally unsound! They use more power to charge, more plastic for casing. Hooray?

  • Admittedly not a techie person, so anything on that side of things I can't speak to at all, but on the political side of the fence (politics is what you're describing) it seems like we're in the nation state building era of the fediverse. Lines are being drawn, borders created, and rules invented. I think it'll take some time for the dust to settle, but eventually we'll probably end up with several super large (relatively, anyway) instances, run by major players, probably corporate, and a bunch of little servers that are forced to either be niche communities unto themselves (think Cuba) or effectively vassal states of the larger instances (think Micronesia) or run by one of the larger ones, but semi independent (think Guam).

But honestly, I still think that's better than the alternatives. That sea of fediverse Cubas is just recreating forums in a new way, and I'd love to get back to that. And even if there are massive corporately run instances, it seems like you'll still have way more freedom than you currently do under the meta/reddit/Twitter climate. (With that caveat that I do not know things about tech, so maybe not?)

But no, despite lemmy being a reddit lookalike, or Mastodon being twitteresque, none of these are replacements for those. They're their own thing, that will evolve and become more and more distinct as time goes on. Hopefully anyway. I still like it here way better than Reddit, even aside from my personal feelings about open source software, political bullshit surrounding rich people and corps. I like the climate here, there's plenty of content, and I feel like I can have actual conversations again (like this one!) Instead of just me being baited by someone looking for karma like on reddit. Yes, I hope Reddit dies, and yes, I came to lemmy from reddit, but even if neither of those were the case, I still think it's nicer here, and that the model has potential. Again, I don't know shit about tech. For all I know this isn't super scalable. But from the view point of instances as states instead of email, I see it being pretty expandable. We just have to figure out how to prevent America from nuking anyone. :p

  • Well now I do

  • Did you use a system of some kind when coming up with it? Like some I've seen suggested in the past are things like "3rd word of favorite song+seconds pets name+last 4 digits of serial number on your fridge"

    Anything like that?

  • And poetry isn't always literal.

  • Excuse me, I resent being attacked at 5am on a Friday, tyvm.

  • As a born and raised southerner, y'all can be used for one person or many, with no clear limit on the number. All y'all is used to stress a point or to make it clear that it references everyone capable of hearing the message or just anyone who could be intended. All y'all is mainly used, in real world applications, in the sentence "all y'all can go fuck y'allself" or similar.

  • Texas does not have a monopoly on y'all. Y'all is collective, both as a noun, and as ownership. Y'all is Southern for Comrade.
