  • What's the purpose of the megathread? I'm so confused what's going on with this community...

My name is Wil Wheaton. I Live With Chronic Depression and Generalized Anxiety. I Am Not Ashamed.

My life is, by every objective measurement, very very good.

And in spite of all of that, I struggle every day with my self esteem, my self worth, and my value not only as an actor and writer, but as a human being.

That’s because I live with Depression and Anxiety, the tag team champions of the World Wrestling With Mental Illness Federation.

People replying "not a shower thought!" creep me out. Like... how do you know what I do in the shower??

Linda went to an Ivy League university, but, like many others, found that the prestigious education came with its own set of challenges and pitfalls.

    Does anyone actually like spez?

The anti-spez crows likes to paint people who keep using Reddit as sheep. But are there people out there who actually think he's doing a good job?

  • What are you upset about? $0/hr is a generous salary.

Chinese people save more money because 8 is a lucky number. In China, it's common to see prices of 188元 and 588元. Meanwhile, Americans are stuck paying $199 and $599.

  • These are people who want to be mods of communities. If you don't understand the basics of how this platform works, you probably need to spend more time as a regular user before becoming a moderator.

  • Thanks for the feedback -- I'm really excited about starting this community, and I think I overdid it on the promotion 😬

  • "Bilingual" is really hard to define.

I live in Taiwan (English is my native language), and have studied Chinese to be passably fluent. I can trick people into thinking I can follow advanced conversations, interjecting comments here or there (even though I'm mostly lost -- just picking out the tidbits I do understand and commenting on them).

But am I bilingual? At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. What matters the most is whether your level is "good enough" to do what you want! In my case, I just want to be able to go to the store, buy things, and hang out with friends. I can read the newspaper, but I'll never be able to read/write business contracts -- but that's not a goal of mine.

There are so many different shades of bilingual. Don't worry about it... and just be as good as you need to reach your goals!

  • Welcome aboard! I really hope this commumity provides the support you need. Keep writing!

    What’s your dream job?

  • Does this mean I need to start by getting writer's block?

  • I don't think that's a sock. I have a feeling that's something like a fleshlight (a sex toy). It's not supposed to go on your foot...

  • With great power comes great responsibility

  • I don't cry when I chop onions. If I'm chopping dozens of them, everyone needs to get out of the kitchen because the air will get potent (but I won't notice).

What special ability do you posess that most people don't have?

  • Weird, I must have messed something up when uploading my images. I merged everything into one -- I hope you can see it this time! (Oh, and thanks for letting me know about the problem!)

  • Going to college.

I grew up in a cult, and I seem to have suppressed most of my childhood. Of course, I have bits and pieces -- like little flashbacks from my childhood days -- but I don't really have a coherent childhood story. From college onwards is when my life story makes sense to me.

    Do e-cigarettes actually work?

I have a friend who has been using an e-cigarette for 10+ years. He doesn't seem any less addicted to smoking as back when he was using old-fashioned cigarettes.

I understand e-cigarettes are supposed to help you quit... but has anyone actually had success with them? Or, is it more like trading one vice for another?

Why would anyone want to be a moderator?

Are moderators just purely altruistic? Or do they have an ulterior motive?

  • I always have one with me in case I enter a shop that has a sign up asking patrons to wear a mask. I used to wear them religiously, but 3 years is enough. Although I respect everyone who still keeps their masks on...

  • Asklemmy @lemmy.ml
    CaspianXI @lemmy.world

Who here still wears a mask?

  • I was pretty sure this isn't behind a paywall. I made a pastebin that expires in one week: https://pastebin.com/rK82JgyY

  • They needed examples. How long is a meter? How heavy is a kilogram?

  • Phone, keys, headphones, wallet, loose change, pen, mask, portable battery pack.

At least, that's what's in my pockets this very moment. Not including trash (random receipts, etc)

  • In simple English... A number is divisible by 7 if the difference between 2 times the last digit and the remaining digits is divisible by 7.

    Examples:

    • Is 14 divisible by 7? 4*2=8. 8-1=7. Check.
    • Is 28 divisible by 7? 8*2=16. 16-2=14. Check.
    • Is 182 divisible by 7? 2*2=4. 18-4=14. Check.
    • Is 1323 divisible by 7? 3*2=6. 132-6=126.
      • Is 126 divisible by 7? 6*2=12. 12-12=0. Check.

OP, if I have misunderstood your reasoning, please correct me.

How Pirates Thwarted America’s Plan to Go Metric

In the late 1700s, Thomas Jefferson wanted the United States to adopt a unified system of measurement and saw the metric system as the best solution. However, a pirate attack in the Caribbean disrupted these plans. Joseph Dombey, a French scientist carrying a kilogram and meter stick to demonstrate the metric system, was captured by pirates. By the time France sent another scientist to explain the system to the Americans, Jefferson was no longer in office, and plans to go metric were disregarded.

Bread, cheese, and tomatoes have all been around since ancient times. So, why did it take so long to invent pizza?

  • Awesome, thanks!

  • I like liftoff too, but the notifications screen won't show me which post people are replying to, so ot gets confusing.

Is there a way to fix this?

  • Why haven't clothing manufacturers figured this out yet?

Japan Still Has Ninjas — But They’re About to Go Extinct

In 2012, Jinichi Kawakami emerged as the last surviving ninja grandmaster. Kawakami believed that the art of ninjutsu has no place in the modern age, as we have better weapons, the internet, and better medicines. Masaaki Hatsumi, another surviving ninja grandmaster, has not appointed an heir. Once Kawakami and Hatsumi pass away, ninjas will forever cease to exist.

Is it rude to borrow an unused power outlet without asking?

Sometimes I'm at the doctor's office, at the library, or even at the grocery store and see an unused power outlet. My phone is dying. I feel weird plugging in, but I feel even weirder asking for permission.
