Is it really necessary and beneficial to kill your lawn before planting alternative ground cover? I have had really good success overseeding the typical lawn that came with my house with clover (not native, but good for my crappy soil), and letting strawberries, violets, cinquefoils, other natives grow, and pulling nonnative "weeds" by hand.
