You might want to consider posting on !newcommunities@lemmy.world (as an "under new management" post) and on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca. I'd recommend spacing out the posts by a few days to reach more people.
Also, any idea what happened to Bee? Sal added Bee as a mod, Bee added you and Bitswap as mods, but now Bee's account and comments have vanished.
Tip: when mentioning or promoting a community, use the exclamation point format for convenient linking (see post body for details)

Great. Make sure to post it in:
Here you go. I'd consider these beginner-friendly because they're not focused on tech or politics.
Feel free to promote it in !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca
I feel if I spontaneously quit all my niche gaming communities and posted everything I'd post there on a general community instead, I'd annoy everyone with a bunch of Steam links for games they probably do not care about. People in the niche communities are more likely to care about a link to a game in a genre they already like. Also, for most of the small communities I've got at least one other poster sometimes, and that's better than nobody! Despite all the trouble with incremental.social and federation, when I can get on there we do have a few regulars chatting there and that's nice.
You could make the argument that I'm simply posting low-quality content, and I'd just have to raise the bar for !games@lemmy.world to accept my posts, and that I just want my niches back, to which I say: fair. But unfortunately I'm no video game expert or connoisseur. I play and enjoy. The lovely guide and wiki makers usually get there before I can. I'm not too good at coming up with fun discussion questions that are better than what I'd consider low-tier engagement bait back on Reddit like "name one good thing about [noncontroversial character]". So link posts it is, better some on-topic content than none at all. And even if I did write a wonderful in-depth review or guide, if it's not for some big mainstream appeal game but something that only genre enthusiasts really like, not sure how well !games@lemmy.world would take to it. So that's my rationale for having these niche communities. You're still very free to think I'm wrong ;) Thanks for contributing in earnest to !games@lemmy.world!
I think this post would be better suited for !newcommunities@lemmy.world or !communitypromo@lemmy.ca.
Seems like a neat (and tasty!) community though. Best wishes!
You should probably include as instance agnostic link as well: !cooking_with_fire@feddit.uk
Finally, the way !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca reacted to a post for a game aimed at women, !infinitynikki@discuss.tchncs.de, with tons of downvotes, was either not very encouraging for anime content that was still gaming content getting put in general communities (especially because one commenter explained they mistook it for a game meant to titillate because the icon was an anime girl even though part of why I really like Infinity Nikki is because it is a nice open-world game where women aren’t sexualized, but I can still have nice hair physics and clothing physics), or for content aimed at women getting received well in general spaces.
Yeah, it was definitely sad to see. Feels like the Threadiverse as a whole seems to mostly share one single opinion, which is indeed not even really justified
In general, yes.
I went and made !otomegames@ani.social instead of glomming into the existing visual novel communities half because someone else had started an otome community that died, so I felt okay making one (and then another when the instance died).
And half because 1) most of general gaming communities does not care about anime romance visual novels aimed at women and I did not really want to see a bunch of name-calling towards us, and 2) although the only currently-active visual novels community would be fine to post to, when I started there were more and the audience was very much dudes who like women. Although there is an overlap between people who play games aimed at horny straight men and people who play otome games (I know some!), it's much smaller, and most otome players I know are women who do not wanna see VNs where we're highly sexualized. I can understand the same for men not wanting to see VNs full of our romantic fantasies (although the dudes in ours are less-often sexualized). I am cool with games aimed at horny men existing, but that does not mean I want to step into a space posting them all the time, the same way I am happy to let other people eat lemons but I'm not putting one in my mouth.
The current !visualnovels@ani.social probably would not reject otome posts, but what it used to be probably would, and the old VN communities probably would too; and most though not all otome players would reject the greater surrounding VN community of the past (what it currently is on ani.social would probably be accepted) because of how often what was posted there would turn out to be galge and not more gender-neutral stuff anyone could like like Ace Attorney.
Finally, the way !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca reacted to a post for a game aimed at women, !infinitynikki@discuss.tchncs.de, with tons of downvotes, was either not very encouraging for anime content that was still gaming content getting put in general communities (especially because one commenter explained they mistook it for a game meant to titillate because the icon was an anime girl even though part of why I really like Infinity Nikki is because it is a nice open-world game where women aren't sexualized, but I can still have nice hair physics and clothing physics), or for content aimed at women getting received well in general spaces.
We're small but I'd rather have this than nothing, or posting in big communities and getting constantly questioned about why I play a game where you can date fictional men instead of putting myself on the market in real life (lots of otome gamers are in happy, healthy relationships in real life! Or are not interested in relationships but still find fictional romance fun, or have trauma and are in a stage in their recovery where fictional romance is okay but looking for dates in real life isn't. In my circumstances, a relationship would be nice but I know I could be happy without one too, and sticking my neck out on some dating app or going to a bar would inevitably get me horrid behavior I have never faced in real life yet. So I'll keep living my daily life, which involves interacting with other humans, sometimes men, but not disrupting it by going to a bar as a non-drinker and non-dancer or downloading a dating app).
Tip of My Joystick: a new Lemmy community for finding a game whose name you can't remember
Just pick a niche sub on something interesting and start commenting. You'll soon think of things that'd make a great post. Here are some possibilities:
That seems much more like this community, !newcommunities@lemmy.world ...
Subscribed/Scaled is my go-to, and then switching sort to New Comments if I'm bored and looking for active discussions.
But to get a good Subscribed feed going you have to really scour !newcommunities@lemmy.world !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl for a while.

You just create one, it's pretty self explanatory I'd say. Click the "Create community" button in the web UI. If you are using a Lemmy mobile client, I think none of them support creating communities yet.

Hey, just clicked on something in this series of posts for the first time. Genuinely, thanks for your effort in writing it. I usually see link posts, and I have missed big original writeups like this. We need more people like you on Lemmy.
Re: slowdown, I use Lemmy exclusively via browser and it's a very smooth experience for me ;)
]ANYWAY, to the point, I really enjoyed this video from Fastminer07 on YouTube, it was clear and reiterates how important this is. Worth a look if you’re searching for interseting videos for your down-time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Ih__mE05c)
Might want to turn that first bracket to be an opening bracket so the link works.
I'm not a perfect being so I use Steam out of convenience instead of GOG, though I do have a GOG account. I am pleased to see good news from them and that they are maintaining a good library of games. It is nice to see the option that I think people choose in an effort to be anti-DRM and to support games preservation doing well.
I should probably look into the Switch emulator thing more, sounds ripe for an original !hobbydrama@lemmy.world post.
Recently picked up shapez.io again, part of the !automationgames@lemmy.zip genre. Just started that community. Also currently playing !infinitynikki@discuss.tchncs.de (which at least one person on Lemmy mistook for a waifubait anime gacha game with straight male gaze fanservice going off the community icon, which I think earned it a bunch of downvotes when promoted in !newcommunities@lemmy.world. When to be honest, it is the opposite: still an open world gacha game, but marketed at women. No romance featured, no sexualized fanservice, but a lot of pretty outfits to dress up in with nice hair and dress physics), !pokemon@lemm.ee, and Antimatter Dimensions which is in the !incremental_games@incremental.social genre. I have several !otomegames@ani.social that I kind of just stopped midway through even though they were enjoyable; likewise with the !crpg@lemmy.world Dragon Age: Origins. I enjoy the above listed genres and games, as well as !citybuilders@sh.itjust.works, !tycoon@lemmy.world or management games, and !lifesimulation@lemmy.world games. There are other games I enjoy too but this is sort of turning into my subscribed communities list, and I'm not currently playing them right now 😅 I game on Linux (PC only, not in the market for a console, however Steam trying to sell the Steam Deck and then doing the whole Proton thing to try to make more games compatible with their Linux-based console means that suddenly a lot more games are playable on Linux so I'm grateful for that), iOS, and MacOS. Lutris has been very helpful for finding different emulators on Linux.
For transparency, I mod !automationgames@lemmy.zip and !otomegames@ani.social but not the rest, and I want to help the other Fediverse communities I listed grow. I like those genres but am not super knowledgeable about any of them and like seeing recommendations and discussion about them.
Sure.
You might want to subscribe to !newcommunities@lemmy.world, and browse here once in a while: https://lemmyverse.net/communities
Ugh. If you are suggesting it it's probably a good idea. Just a bit frustrated that two community promo things exist, especially since in my experience this is its smaller cousin that usually just sees duplicates from !newcommunities@lemmy.world. The only benefit I can think of is that if Beehaw is still defederated from lemmy.world because of its size they can see !communitypromo@lemmy.ca too. Will be posting there soon…
ok @Hermit_Lailoken@lemmy.world looks like we got you set up. You got @Eldritch@lemmy.world and @gid@lemmy.blahaj.zone as co-mods, both of them have mod experience and have been around for a while so I think you all together will be able to handle it.
I've removed myself as mod, but I will advertise the "relaunch" on places like !communitypromo@lemmy.ca !newcommunities@discuss.online and !newcommunities@lemmy.world , let me know if I can help you out some other way, I'll be on the community obviously!
Great idea!
Be sure to advertise it on !newcommunities@lemmy.world, !newcommunities@discuss.online, !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and !wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca.
!newcommunities@lemmy.world is a great place to discover new communities. As for big ones that already exist I’m sure there’s probably a list of big communities out there somewhere, otherwise browsing by All > Top 6 Hours or All > Hot will give you a good mix of everything. Then you can add communities you like from there
Edit: also lots of communities will shout out other communities in their sidebars. Check those too
Good luck with the new community, sounds like a great idea.
You could try !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca to help promote it!
Would anyone have any issue with locking this community, keeping all the posts and comments up, and redirecting to !television@lemm.ee ?

Is communities discovery really that bad, do we just miss enough people, or should people revisit their expectations and go for more general communities?
