Two phones setup for longevity and privacy
Ive been using custom roms to greatly extend the lifespan of my phone (still using a xiaomi mi9t from 2019, running smoothly on A15, with lineageOS). Some apps, like banking apps, or gov apps sometimes require a stock android and locked bootloader. But, besides the stock spyware, stock roms become unusable in 2 to 3 years, forcing an upgrade.
Im thinking of getting a cheap 2nd phone to keep with stock android to use banking/gov apps and to leave at home. This way i could use my primary phone with a custom rom and have it working for way longer than 3 years, with less spyware, and wasting less money (depending on the price of that 2nd phone).
Does this seem like a decent strategy considering how android is moving?
Important question: If the cheap phone gets outdated, would it be safe to use it for banking considering i wouldnt install other apps or use a browser in that phone?
The brands available here (brazil) are mostly motorola, samsung, lg, xiaomi and realme (no pixels, no

Companies to invest and ways to financially weaken israel/US?
I hope this is not inappropriate. I live in australia, a massive supporter of israel/US. I am aware that my money here will always directly or indirectly support israel/US murdering people. There's nothing I can do about them, but I want to make sure I'm not helping them, and even better, if possible, hurting them.
I would like to take the money out of the bank and invest in companies that do not support in any way the monsters, and part of it to donate to fight them, if such option legally (since they control the law) exists. But I'm having trouble finding anything.
I found this thread which lead nowhere on reddit https://old.reddit.com/r/HalalInvestor/comments/1az8ph6/stocks_that_arent_supporting_israel/ But I think most of them are americans. Maybe in a non american audience I could get ideas.
As for donations, my main concern is that, like I said, they control the law, so I have little way of knowing that any organization I donate to will be allowed to do something legally, and

Opinions on nitro-infused carbon steel wok

Does anyone have any opinions on nitro-infused carbon steel? I have a large carbon steel wok at home and found this smaller wok for $30 at my local Asian grocery store. I like it because the smaller size and larger flat bottom makes it easier to wield and cook evenly. Some light research shows it’s more for making the pan more durable and doesn’t really affect cooking, although I did see a comment that it’s a little harder for the seasoning to stick.
I haven’t seen any negative stuff safety-wise yet, but I did see that the process is used commonly for manufacturing industrial materials and is even used in guns. So I don’t really know if it’s safe because ammonia or sodium cyanide are the nitrogen-rich ingredients that are applied to the pan. And to a layman’s ear, that doesn’t really sound nice.

Are there cookbooks that are like “workbooks”?
Something that you can work through slowly to upgrade cooking skills, if that makes sense.
Preferably for Indian food…

Does anyone else have a pile of 'scrap' paper to doodle/write stuff on?
I have a pile of papers from my last Pathfinder character sheets, earlier DnD character level sheets, and some old bank mail sheets that I've jotted down notes and doodled on. It lives on the left edge of my computer desk. And of course, it lives atop other things I intended to take care of, over a month ago. Hahaha.
edit: Just found another piece of paper that had a bunch of things going on. A section where I was working out a framework and wording for a birthday message. A hell of a lot of practice cursive signatures so I can have "a cool stylized yet simple" signature. Doodles of all sorts of things. Most are playing with space (or volume if you may) and layout. Some are works on semitry. Then I spent time looking and crafting two names for a fantasy setting story I'm "working on."

Installing Steam Link
I'm quite new to Nixos and want to install Steam Link. Has anyone ever installed it? There is a fairly old discussion on Github about it that mentions some appimage but there does not seem to be a package. Any ideas how to approach this?

What is your go-to bolognese recipe?
I tried the weeknight bolognese that ATK published, but it was not nearly as good as others I've had. I think there were too many shortcuts taken...

Quietest 16-18TB hard drive for NAS
Looking to upgrade my NAS hard drives. Currently have two 4TB WD Red Plus hard drives but I wanted to get some large capacity drives. Was looking into getting 16 or 18TB drives. My current drives are basically whisper quiet and have been running great since 2019 but I feel like it's time to upgrade the capacity.
The NAS is currently on a desk beside my computer. I don't have any cabinets to place it in and would prefer not to connect to it through Wi-Fi. Hence why I'd like for the drives to be as quiet as possible.
I was considering getting a Seagate Exos or Ironwolf (and buying used for the great price) but I've read users online saying they regret buying those models because of their noise. I was also looking at the WD Red Pro but WD's own website only rates them at 3.6/5 with most of the negative complaints about dead on arrival drives. Additionally 25% of all reviews are 1 star; both of which don't fill me with much confidence.
TLDR: What's a quiet and reliable hard dr

Cutting Board Recommendations (Machine Washable, No Microplastics)
Hi all! We'd like to stop using our plastic cutting boards due to cutting little bits of plastic into our food. Unfortunately, the most obvious alternative, wooden cutting boards, are more of a pain to clean.
I'd love suggestions on what I could use instead. I saw there's a brand called Epicurean that uses some sort of other material that can be machine washed. Has anyone used them before?
I'd especially love something made in Germany or in the EU, but I'm open to looking farther afield if necessary.
Thank you!

- On Windows 10, you can create a second, third, or more desktops. I use one of these as my task focused desktop to get stuff done. It's great for me because only the web browser and tabs that I open in it will be shown. This helps a lot to keep me from seeing another browser instance and having the urge to switch back.

- I use an Android and realized just this year that I could pause apps. To do this, hold your finger on the app for 2 seconds. A menu will appear, and the hourglass looking thing is tapped to pause the app. This is great for me when I don't want to get pinged with a bunch of stuff in a set period of time. It also saves battery energy as the app is either no longer running in the background or is running on a low amount of energy. Then when you're ready to use a paused app, hold your finger on the app for 2 seconds, and a new menu will s

How do I make my curry taste like the stuff from a Thai restaurant?
I know a big part of it is making sure to get authentic curry paste. What else would I need to make something like a nice tofu curry (6/5 spicy) that would taste like the stuff I could get as takeout?

Global Dark Mode Setting in NixOS Config (no home manager)
Basically the title. I would like apps that auto detect system theme to see it as dark mode. I’ve come across post after post of doing this with home manager, but I’d like to just do it in my base nix config. I tried a few different ways to declare what I thought was being done in the home manager tutorials in my config, but none of it worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Would a "soft block" be a useful feature?
I realize Lemmy already has user blocking, so this might seem redundant. But, hear me out:
Problems with Lemmy's blocking:
- If you are a mod, blocking a user will hide their submissions even in the community/communities you're moderating. You'll still see their content if its reported, but you can't be proactive. e.g. Sometimes you'd like to block someone, but it's not warranted to ban them from your community(s), and you don't want to rely only on reports or see their shit elsewhere. So you just kinda grit your teeth and deal with it.
- As a regular user, blocking someone will hide their comments AND any replies to those comments. You'll often miss out on quite a bit.
Proposal: Soft block (or, more aptly "Filter User")
Instead of blocking at the API level, it will simply filter out the users in the UI.
I've greatly enhanced the keyword and other filtering components in the current dev branch which is what prompted this idea. With the revised implementation, commen

(US) Any actions to prevent Medical information leak?
Hi, I just found out my dentists office is using a program called "Second Opinion" produced by "Hello Pearl". There is literally no information about what this company does in the background with my information, however I know they at the very least have:
- My full legal name
- X-Rays of my teeth
I'm concerned because there is literally nothing online about how to opt out of them using your data for AI training. They are an AI company and the screen the Dentist was showing me showed a pop-up about provides information being able to be used for AI training. What should I do, what are my rights?

How to re-authenticate a paperless-ngx oauth2 mail configuration
Hi,
I've been been happily running paperless for a while now, and I've even got a few useful mail actions. However, I'm having trouble keeping the oauth2 (gmail) configuration alive past a few weeks. I suspect the refresh token expires, since the configuration stops working. And since I can't figure out how to re-authenticate, I have to create a new configuration, move all actions to the new one, and delete the old one.
Does anyone know how I can keep the original config and just re-authenticate?
Thanks
