AutoMod fun

You may notice a comment/post of yours being removed for "suspicious activity" by AutoMod. If you see it's still gone, ping me.

Apparently it went crazy and started doing that to a lot of people.

Discussion about the future of this community

We receive a lot of reports from this community, and we get the impression that the current rules and moderation capabilities aren't sufficient for a community like this. While things are quieter right now, during periods of activity this community tends to cause unnecessary strain on the lemmy.ca admin team.

Having additional moderators could help with this, as well as having a more comprehensive set of rules. That way, the community's mod team can go through the queue more quickly and also take action on users that abuse the reports.

For the sake of a productive discussion, please limit comments in this thread to discussions on how to improve this community, without directly pointing to specific users or situations. Ideally, this will also help to develop better rules (think 'veil of ignorance').

Enumerated list of rules

Since it's slightly less than easy to glean the rules from the sidebar, here's an itemized collection of rules. For example, the schadenfreude rule can be referred to as a)1.

a) Posts must be uplifting.

  1. This excludes schadenfreude.[1]

b) Posts must not overtly deal with toxic politics.[1]

c) Links must not be low-effort.[1]

  1. Links must not go to a copy of a copy of a copy.
(Try finding the original source instead! Links do not have to be textual, so there's no need to find a content farm to post a video.)
  2. Posts must not be fake news.

If there's something you think that should be on here but isn't, feel free to say so!

Looking for mods

Current head mod is absent for reasons unknown, so I'd like to appoint some new people. This is a fairly slow community, so shouldn't be too much work. I'll also keep an eye on reports, like I have been doing.

My only real requirement is that you're not banned from a major instance, as mod actions won't federate.

Please stop linking to utubepublisher

Over the past week, I've seen a lot of discontent on this source, which gets a lot of deserved flak for seeming like a content farm that adds little to its original sources.

I discussed this with @sga013@lemmy.world, who pointed out that we do actually have a rule against such outlets instituted in the "no schadenfreude" post:

We are also banning low effort news or fake news. This could be news which is not adding anything new at all or is a copy of a copy of a copy (and bad one). Please try to fetch original sources. This is just to maintain a standard. This does not restrict you from posting a news which is targeted at a small group, or is published by a small group which may not be publishing a very fancy, furnished looking posts. Essentially - a no fluff rule.

This applies very much to www.utubepublisher.in . I've added a mention of the above rule to the sidebar, and please take care to not post articles like that of this outlet from now on. Instead, post the original source

Taking applications for mod(s)

With the exit of Admiral Patrick, this community is in need of at least one more moderator.

If interested, make a comment, and tell us why you want to be a mod.

Not going to do a painful process. If you have a overall good vibe, you're prolly in.

Goodbye, My Friend: DubVee (and c/30Rock) is shutting down

I've decided to shutdown Dubvee, so that means this community is going away. I'm not aware of any other 30 Rock community to recommend, but if someone wants to start one on Piefed and take over, I am open to assisting with a community transfer.

It may seem dirty doing this while Jen is out of action, but we talk IRL, and she's known for a good while that my interest in Lemmy has been fading, so I know she understands.

How would you feel about a regularly scheduled discussion thread in this community, for medical professionals to chat about how things are going?

A number of communities use scheduled threads to help get discussion started, and I thought this community could benefit from something like that. It reduces the pressure on individual users to be the first one to post a discussion post, since this community is mostly news/research articles.

It could be to chat about how things are going professionally, to share stories from that week, to discuss a piece of news/research in depth, etc.

If this sounds good to you, how often should the threads be scheduled? Any other considerations?

The Fediverse's collaborative pixel art event is coming back. Last year we successfully put down this championship belt, designed by me.

If people are interested in participating again this year I'm willing to design something else. Of course, if someone else wants to design something I'm down for that too.

Last year I just put together the belt as a suggestion and we went with it. This year I figured we could get some more community input on what the design should be. Another belt? A wrestling ring? Should we go all in on a Mr. Iguana mural? The world sucks, lets detract ourselves with some pixel art.

Could we please put NSFW tags on Transition timelines?

I recently had to realise that seeing the pictures of transition timelines of others is like literally an instant trigger for my Dysphoria. That's why I would really like if could put an NSFW Tag on The pictures, so that I or others dont have to see them if we dont want to. I would really appreciate that. :)

Please keep Jen (the mod here) and her family in your thoughts

A bit of sad news to report.

What many of you may not know is that the mod here, Jenny, is one of my oldest IRL friends. Earlier today I got a call from her husband letting me know that when he came home from work Saturday, he found her unresponsive. She has been in the ICU since then. She was awake and talking yesterday morning but is now in a medically induced coma (mostly due to secondary complications).

I'm intentionally skipping over the specifics, but suffice it to say she's got a fight ahead of her. Things were too hectic this evening to visit, but I'm hoping to go see her tomorrow or as soon as the situation stabilizes enough to allow for non-family visitors.

So please keep her and her family in your thoughts.

Thanks,

Patrick
