What makes someone a “US leader” in public perception — popularity, office, or enduring impact?

Framing a neutral question about criteria rather than advocacy: if you had to choose three weighting factors for “leader” (office power, sustained results, cross-partisan influence), how would you balance them?

I’m curious how people define “leader” today when a list mixes current officeholders, historic presidents, activists, and jurists. If you had to set a 3–4 point rubric (scope, durability of impact, coalition-building, results), what would it be?

It's been kinda a slow week as far as Deck news goes, so seems like a good time for a discussion post.

What's something that's significantly improved your deck experience? It can be a hardware accessory, software, decky plugin, etc.

Flatpaks, ram/disk usage and compression

I have 91 flatpaks, and it is my primary way of getting apps. But the (not very shared) dependencies have been bothering me lately.

I was primarily drawn in because Gnome Software has a cool UI and because I wanted the magic of one-click installs. I heard a lot of things about Flatpak and gave it a try.

I have a relatively small 72GB BTRFS root partition with zstd:1 (lowest) enabled. I think disk compression helps with the Flatpak dependency mess, as I only have 60% disk usage currently.

Idk how much extra RAM my flatpaks use, but I don't want 4 versions of the same dependency taking up space in my RAM. Thought about enabling zram to compensate for this. As different versions of the same library in RAM are easy to compress.

I don't think this compression mentality I instinctively adopted is healthy. Make stuff reliable in expense of storage/ram -> compress storage/ram in expense of proc. power

Another thing is slow Flatpak downloads. I have a gigabit connection, and Arch mirrors g

This is very exciting. Here is the APK I downloaded. And the associated discussion.

It even already seems to support stylus input which is very exciting seeing as there has been talk of porting RNote to Android.

Reminding that Steam is also a store on the ARM platform

I’m taking inspiration from this thread

As you know, the Mac platform has been exclusively ARM for quite some time. Cyberpunk 2077 was recently released for Switch 2, which is also an ARM-based platform. The release of Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be made possible because much of the game’s libraries and binaries have already been ported to ARM; by publishing on Mac (i.e., ARM), CD Projekt appears to be trying to recoup some of their investment. The point I want to raise is whether we’re approaching a paradigm shift where PC gaming genuinely opens up to RISC platforms.

For those unfamiliar, here’s the short version: at the moment, the fundamental pillars of PC gaming are called x86. Globally, only two companies have the right to define this standard: Intel and AMD. Furthermore, the standards that govern graphics (GPUs) on x86 are basically a triopoly: Intel and AMD, with Nvidia—by far the dominant force—added to the mix.

On the ARM side, we have over 10

Hello everyone :)

Firstly, I'm not anyhow related to programming at ALL ! I can put together some easy to use bash scripts, to automate some stuff, while copy/pasting from the web and doing A LOT of trial an error. It sometimes took me a whole week to have a functional script. I also sometimes asked for some help here on Lemmy and still uses some of those script people helped me out to build up from the ground !

Secondly, I'm not really into the AI slope and have a lot of arguments why I hate it (Unauthorized webscrapping, High energy consumption, Privacy nightmare....).

However, I have to say I'm quite impressed how good my first experience with AI was, considering my very limited knowledge in programming. The script works perfectly for my use case. I had to switch between Claude and O4-mini to get the best results and took me a whole day of prompting around and testing before it behaved like I wanted it to !

Without going to much into details, I was looking for a way to interfac

Why are Android boot times relatively slow?

Original question by @monovergent@lemmy.ml

The storage and processing power of modern smartphones are touted to rival those of a typical laptop. Yet, my trash-picked testing system from over a decade ago with a bottom-of-the-barrel SATA SSD can still boot to the Linux desktop faster than all but one of my Android devices.

Understandably, this isn't a huge priority since very few people are cold booting their phones every morning. But is it just plain unoptimized? How hard would it be to optimize? Do security features and checks bog it down? Is it that there's many tiny files to load when booting? What gives?
