That's definitely odd. Here's a pic of this post we're talking on. You can see the percentage after the time it was posted. Maybe it's something that comes with using a compact view?
They didn't require email at the time an time and beehaw didn't have the moderation tools needed to handle the amount of new users.
After doing it for a few minutes the only thing the app uses seems to be Google trackers.

You know where those trackers mostly come from? From the linked websites you visited in the posts.
If you change the Settings shortcut: Link handling > Default browser to "open externally" that should give you a more accurate picture of the trackers included in Sync. By default it will load the websites inside the app, which will give an inaccurate picture of the tracking taking place.
I've got nothing to add to the ddg discussion but today is the first time I've heard of ZoneAlarm. But I saw a post to a Firefox community about the latest update that included support for it and a couple people mentioned it. Just an amusing coincidence

Honestly, I would suggest NextDNS to block ads within the app, so maybe you wouldn’t have to pay for blocking through Sync.

I just opened sync after installing Duck Duck Go. From within sync, Google requested 33 pieces of data. Google. Not sync. Google requested the data from within Sync. I'm fairly certain the only link to Sync that Google has, is the app store.

These were the only (tracking) connections sync made in the past hour.
For the past 24 hours for 2k requests, it apparently made 64 requests for ads and 6 requests for trackers.
I'm not saying you are wrong or anything, but the stats may be more nuanced than you think so.
