Fossify Contacts and Fossify SMS Messenger (Fossify is a fork of Simple Mobile Tools) are now available, joining Fossify's existing suite of Gallery, File Manager, Phone, and Calendar apps.

Fossify Contacts (fork of Simple Contacts) and Fossify SMS Messenger (fork of Simple SMS Messenger) have been released on F-Droid.

Other Fossify apps available for download on F-Droid:

(ICYMI, Simple Mobile Tools suite was acquired by an adware company and their apps on the Google Play Store now contain trackers and unnecessary permissions. This report from Exodus shows that the old version of Simple Gallery had 0 trackers and 10 permissions, whereas the app, after sale, contains 9 trackers and 21 permissions!)

About Fossify: Fossify is all about community-backed, open-source, and ad-free mobile apps. A fork of the SimpleMobileTools, which is no longer maintained, and we’re here to continue the legacy, bringing simple and private tech to everyone.

Conflict between Samsung's Dual Messenger and Work Profile Apps

cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/9331492 >Hi. Is it possible to have Shelter app on a recent Samsung phone? I just got a Samsung A04s because of budget, and it seems like I can't run work profile apps in it. I've tried Shelter, Insular and Island, none of them worked, they're in conflict with native's Dual Messenger option, which is a limited work profile, that only can run message apps like WhatsApp. > > Do you know how to solve this? Maybe someway to remove Dual Messenger?

FOSS RSS Reader app with chatgpt summarizer.

There is an app called FocusReader which does exactly above using user provided chatgpt Api key. I dont want to use api rather authentication in browser since api costs. If app is foss its better. If no such app exist. I may learn app development and integrate this feature in Flym. If anyone has any alternative in mind, please suggest or if you have android app development experience, suggest after looking at the code at github how can i go about the development myself.

Best FOSS alternative to Nova Launcher?

Would really love a launcher that can format icon shapes so that they're all uniform in shape, like Nova Launcher ...but open source. !

Etar not updating on f-droid

When updating f-droid, and etar I believe is trying to update from 1.0.34 to 1.0.35, the following error shows up:

>Error installing Etar - Opensource Calendar > >Error - 112: The system failed to install the package because it s attempting to define a permission that is already defined by some existent package

Not sure what's going on, since there's no mention of which other package has already defined the permission Etar is trying to define. Also, 1.0.34 works fine, and what's advertised as new:

  • Add url field
  • Bug fixes
  • New translatios

So I don't see anything about permissions, :(

Is this happening to others? Any work around, other than waiting for the issue to go away on a future release?

Edit: There's a reported issue on Etar's github: F-Droid Version 1.0.35 Will Not Install, which seems to affect LOS, and therefore LOS for microG (what I use)

Obtainium

Useful toolkit.

The application allows you to search, install and update software directly from the release page of this software in many sources. Why do you need it?

For example, you are using an open source application that for some reason is not available in F-Droid repositories. To update it, you need to find the release page of that application, for example, on GitHub, download and install the package.

This program will do it for you almost automatically. If the link to the release page is known - add it and use it. If it is not known - use keyword search, choose from the output, use it.

Caution, duplication of TrackerControl application.

> TrackerControl (TC) is an Android app that allows users to track and monitor the widespread, persistent, covert collection of data in mobile apps about user behavior ("tracking"). To detect tracking, TrackerControl combines the capabilities of the Disconnect blocklist used in Firefox and our own blocklist built from analyzing ~2,000,000 apps! In addition, TrackerControl supports custom blocklists and uses ClassyShark3xodus/Exodus Privacy signatures to analyze tracker libraries in application code.

!

!

!

There was created a duplicate of this application in F-droid application (not site, all links from this duplicated application lead to official developer pages on F-droid site also original TC, in the application itself from "TrackerControl" nothing was changed except adding to the main screen a filter of applications working with/without internet, which is mentioned on the screen with the duplicated application.

!

!

!

  • Was it worth adding a separate application for the sake of application filter on the main screen and signing it as from "TrackerControl"?
  • Can it be considered as something unkind or is it an attempt to update the original application independently?

how do apps get removed from f-droid?

As an example, Infinity for Reddit is likely no longer viable due to the Reddit API changes. This version of Talkback has not been updated since 2013 while this version says it is deprecated. The only viable one at the moment is this one since it has the most recent update.

App for version control of text files

Are there any open source apps that can version control text files in Android? I don't necessarily need something with lots of features like Git. Even something similar to RCS would be sufficient for me.

I have a tablet, a #Huawei from the embargo time which means a forked #Android 10 without Google. I'm quite happy using it with mostly open source apps installed via @fdroid : Tusky, Fennec, @k9mail, VLC... Unfortunately, the last update is from July 2022. Now the screen is broken, yet the tablet is still usable. Now I am unsure whether to pay 35€ for a new screen or just use it as long as the screen still works. I cannot completely rule out that for example videos via #mastodon can be a risk 1/

Authenticator Pro

Authenticator Pro - Free open source two-factor authentication app for Android. Has encrypted backups, icons, categories and a high level of customization. There is also a companion app for Wear OS.

TOTP (time-based) and HOTP (counter-based) authenticators are supported, using SHA1, SHA256 or SHA512 hashing algorithms. Mobile-Otp (mOTP), Steam, and Yandex are also supported.

Two-factor authentication provides an additional layer of account security by requiring a one-time login code. In addition to a username and password, a code provided by Authenticator Pro is required. So even if your login credentials are compromised, your account remains secure.

Features

  • ⚙️ Compatibility: Authenticator Pro is compatible with most ISPs and accounts.
  • 📲Import: Easily transfer accounts to Authenticator Pro from supported alternative applications.
  • 💾 Backup/Restore: Authenticator backup with strong encryption. If you lose or change your phone, you can always access your accounts. Backups can be saved to cloud storage or on your device.
  • 🌙 Dark Mode: Authenticator Pro has a beautiful appearance created in material design style, in light or dark themes.
  • ⏺️ Icons: Easily find your authenticators with recognizable brand logos and icons next to each code.
  • 📂 Categories: Organize your authenticators by category.
  • 🔒 Autonomy with few permissions: Authenticator Pro requires only one permission¹ and does not need internet access.
  • 🔑 Security: Set a password and use biometric authentication to protect your codes.
  • 🎨 Personalization: Set icons and renaming. You can also arrange the authenticators in any order so they are easy to find.
  • Wear OS: Quickly view authenticators right from your watch. Note that a connection to an Android device is required. Also, distributions of the F-Droid app are not compatible with Wear OS as proprietary dependencies are required.

The app requires camera resolution to scan QR codes.

> Authenticator Pro is currently only available in the F-Droid client via the IzzyOnDroid repository. You must first add this repository to the F-Droid client.

Jerboa

Jerboa is an app for Lemmy, a federated reddit alternative. Jerboa is made by Lemmy's developers, and is free, open-source software, meaning no advertising, monetizing, or venture capital, ever.

Lemmy is similar to sites like Reddit, Lobste.rs, or Hacker News: you subscribe to forums you're interested in, post links and discussions, then vote, and comment on them. Behind the scenes, it is very different; anyone can easily run a server, and all these servers are federated (think email), and connected to the same universe, called the Fediverse.

2

Geddit

Geddit is an open-source Reddit client that is designed to be fast, beautiful and simple. Its main objective is to not use the Reddit API directly, but instead use the RSS/JSON feeds to display content. This allows the app to view Reddit without being subject to API limits, changes and problems. Geddit works without a Reddit account, which also means that you can stay anonymous while browsing Reddit, if you are concerned about privacy.

Some of the features of Geddit include:

  • View posts, comments, subreddits and users
  • View images, gifs, videos and self posts
  • Access NSFW content
  • View your subscribed subreddits
  • Save photos to your device
  • Share posts
  • Search for posts, subreddits and users
  • Support for app links

File manager with root access?
  • Screenshot_2023-09-27-18-17-00-74_4641ebc0df1485bf6b47ebd018b5ee76oh may that be the cause? Im on oneplus 7 pro. Have updated to 1.6.1 but still doesnt work

  • File manager with root access?
  • For root I used File Explorer. But not that functional in other things also not too much config is available.

  • Calendar and tasks sync between devices
  • You don't necessarily need to self-host Nextcloud for yourself, you can pay a provider to do it for you, of course, at a price, or free but with limitations, like The Good Cloud.

    You can also try EteSync.

And in F-Droid there are many apps to integrate your Nextcloud instance with your device, my favorite are Ente (for calendar), Tasks(dot)org and Joplin

It was a simple list that I made.

    You initiated a discussion.

    I disagreed.

And yet you claim I need to move on from a discussion you started.

    Grow up.

  • Some bollocks crushing organisations to reduce the surveillance you endure. They all have different things they are doing. Check them out.
  • @Eheran
If the list was not useful, I would get off my fat butt and educate myself instead of acting like a total Billy Hunt.

You clearly have more than enough spare time. You started and continue what amounts to a useless and pointless discussion.

If it ain't helpful to you, get over it and move on.

  • Some bollocks crushing organisations to reduce the surveillance you endure. They all have different things they are doing. Check them out.
  • @cosmogore
Thanks for the list. I love lists like this. I take a quick look to see if there's something new to me, if there is I might take it from there with some reading or just try to remember the name.

    @Eheran @burchalka @RootBeerGuy
If some people don't find the list helpful, be gracious and appreciate that someone made the effort. Then move on to something worth complaining about.

  • Some bollocks crushing organisations to reduce the surveillance you endure. They all have different things they are doing. Check them out.
  • @Eheran
One would think a minuscule bit of reading after a few clicks would be a small price and microscopic effort for the privacy these organisations might provide.

Then again, sign of the times, perhaps?

  • Some bollocks crushing organisations to reduce the surveillance you endure. They all have different things they are doing. Check them out.

If people are too daise and maisy to literally click a bunch of links, it's all a bit barry.

    You're kinder than I am.

  • @kirschner @fdroid I'll try harder then :)

    #Owncloud client https://owncloud.com/
We use it to connect to our own server for storing receipts, plane tickets, company documentation etc. It's great to keep things synced between devices.

A similar thing is #syncthing, which is cross platform although I don't have a use case for it at the moment, sadly. https://syncthing.net

  • What is your favourite [#fdroid](https://mastodon.social/tags/fdroid) app? Would be interested if I can discover a few new cool apps, I missed until now. Thank you already for sharing! [@fdroid](https
  • @kirschner @fdroid for me, probably the most useful (after maps which has already been covered) is mail. I would recommend https://k9mail.app/.

I use it for work daily and it gets updated regularly.

  • I'm looking for an app like Splitwise
  • Splid is great. Simple yet feature-rich if you need it. If you want to create many different groups for splitting it’s just a small one time fee instead of monthly. If two groups is fine or you just want to join groups it’s free.

And best of all: there is no need for an account! In fact there is no account you could create.

Update: Missed in which community I’m in. The App sadly isn’t FOSS and isn’t in the fdroid-store. But it doesn’t change my opinion about it :)

  • Best FOSS alternative to Nova Launcher?
  • i used to use lawnchair and tested kiss for a friend who never used smartphone before. old school. i played for few hours and kept using it myself.

widgets: clock, jtx board tasks and simple calendar pro. the rest of the home is the empty space for gestures, favorites bar/line and search.

    black background.

kiss after a while disappears as the launcher should. i stopped thinking about launchers. but remember it swiftly once the discussion about launchers start. obviously.

  • Which FOSS apps can be synced with Syncthing?
  • I opened this pretty recently

I'm using KeePass for notes and passwords; any local player like VLC is good for music or videos; any gallery app is good for your photos.
