Do you spend more time on lemmy than you did on reddit?

I'll try to dial back my time on lemmy because I've noticed that I spend way, way more time here than I ever did back on reddit

Yes, I realized there was/is a lot of rage-bait on reddit that kept me typing. Lemmy is more chill, like it's an actual forum with real people with real engagement.
Lemmy is 1000x more real than reddit, but I have found it to be very susceptible to echo chambers. I agree with a lot of the echos in the chamber, and yet I find a lot of people taking nuance out of discussions or believing falsehoods from headlines alone. It's annoying to me, because many if these topics are extreme enough as is, there's no need to hyperbolize. But there is not a lot in the way of difering opinions (when it comes to big topics)
I think any place with moderation is going to have an echo chamber. And then ironic thing is a place without moderation also leads to an echo chamber, since people who don't like the vibe leave.
I try to link to articles or cite something when making bigger statements for that reason. But ofc you can't please everyone.
Like early Reddit, when we migrated from Digg
Some of us skipped Digg and came straight from SomethingAwful.
like it’s an actual forum with real people with real engagement.
Because it's small.
The only bots are from people hobby botting to learn about. If it grows then we'll see intentional bots like anywhere else.
Federation gives unique challenges tho. A big open instance will have a huge bot problem because of how many instances could host the bots. A locked down instance won't see any bots.
Actually less and for a good reason, the doom scroll is not endless.
We have a fraction of the population and a few good posts and discussions on the places I have not blocked. Over all its a lot healthier and I still get my fix of feeling informed-ish. Also Jeboa does not display total votes an account gets meaning there is no "must have X karma to ride" pages that, while attempting to remove bots (it didnt), fills a room with crowd pleasers instead of those seeking discussion or answers.
I spend more time engaging on Lemmy, but I consumed more content on reddit
I have to admit. Reddit can be handy for finding solutions from other people for problems.
I wish Lemmy was comparable for this purpose. Perhaps someday.
Let the people cook - I've learned quite a bit from the technical communities ;)
Yeah, it took Reddit many years to become the treasure trove of information it became. I think Lemmy could get there eventually as various instances build up a larger archive of posts.
reddit also recently got pretty bad, because they keep updating thier filters, or restrictions, or evasion detection. new and old users are the most susceptible to bans. and i read recently reddit has been automatically removing posts for no reason at all(but gearing the site to GOP friendly administration), with high rate of frequency without MOD input/or discussion.
I do feel bad for the few users that have found some niche lemmy communities and asked a genuine question, only to get no replies. If it were in my sphere of knowledge I would answer them.
I try to join communities that have some of my hobby interests, even if super small, for exactly that reason. It can make someone's day! :)
Reddit definitely used to be! But sadly thanks to reddit, I think we're seeing the damage from a disappearing internet when a lot of people mass-deleted their posts and it affects technical pages.
How do I fix this really niche technical issue?
Toasters lollypops groundhogs sport icecube I have scrambled all my reddit posts with a script because reddit sucks and Spez sucks.
Thanks! That's EXACTLY what I needed! I've been looking everywhere for this solution. Have a gold, internet stranger sir/madame. I hope anybody else who has this issue comes here first so they don't spend as long as I did before I saw your post!
💀
I'm on lemmy BECAUSE there is less. Trying to become and ostrich.
Less, because there's still a lot less content here. I check what's new on the communities I'm subscribed to, and that doesn't take long.
No, there's way less stuff to engage with and frankly I don't particularly even like it here.
What don't you like about it? Not enough content or the politics?
I guess it’s not a Lemmy-specific issue but more of a social media thing in general. I just don’t like being around angry people - even when their anger is aimed at people I don’t like either. It’s the cynicism, the wishing harm, the celebrating death or misfortune. I get where it comes from - I just don’t want to be around it. It poisons my mind too.
I spend way less time on here than I did reddit. Not to upset about it though, because I feel like it's only improved my mental health!
Frankly there isn't as much content. So, no.
But if I'm really honest it's about equal because all the content is on bluesky and tiktok.
No, the smaller userbase means there aren't niche communities for my specific interests like games nobody but me like.
I still like Lemmy but those specific connunites I can miss. I completely abandoned Reddit in the APIocalypse anyway
The Sweden board was pretty good too, and there's no where near similar engagement here.
And I do not have the time, engagement or mental fortitude to make these communities, that would be dead, myself. To be honest I don't really understand exactly how Lemmy and the Fediverse works - but I think to bring in more people that can't be expected of users either.
Deleted my reddit account a couple days after discovering Lemmy. I've been to their website a couple times since because it often appears in search results and if I don't see a less shit option I'll dig through the comments of whatever post my search pulled up, but that's the extent of my activity there.
I will never make another reddit account. Fuck spez.
Greedy little pig boy
I actually answer questions and post here unlike when I used RIF, where I just lurked.
I guess that's spending more time? (active participation?)
I engaged a lot early on, but later reddit I just lurked because you could say the same one time and drown in upvotes as another in another post and be flooded with hate a vitriol. It got to the point that it was like Twitter. The only safe places were like specific topics, how to, DIY, certain enthusiast pages. It had to be pretty niche to keep from wading in shit.
People were just mad and wanted to take their anger out on someone, even if they almost entirely agree with you, they'd hammer on one sentence of a 4 paragraph post until you just didn't want to argue the point anymore. That occasionally happens here but it's much more rare, and since there aren't karma hunters looking for easy points here you don't get the dog piling that you did there. By the end of my time there, you could make one unpopular sentence in a post and be hounded for it for DAYS.
By the end of my time there, you could make one unpopular sentence in a post and be hounded for it for DAYS.
Yeah, for good or ill, I notice threads on Lemmy run their course pretty quickly, and replying on something more than a week old feels increasingly pointless.
But also hey, not getting dogpiled for too long is also nice lol.
That's my situation as well. Was only a reddit lurker, but I spend more time talking with people here as there's room for me to be heard through the crowd.
People can still doomscroll here if they choose, but my participation here has led to me doing volunteer work and having countless unique experiences. All I got from reddit was a solid coffee setup.
Less time on Lemmy cause there's less to see. I spend more time on other websites now, when previously reddit used to take up all of my web browsing time.
What kind of other websites?
Imgur and YouTube mostly. I spend more time on forums too.
I only ever lurked on reddit and didn’t spend long when I did - I only started commenting (or rarely posting) because I believe in the fediverse and want to help it succeed. So yeah, way more time spent here and infinitely more engagement.
The time I spent on Reddit was pretty close to zero, except on rare occasions. I used to spend more time on Lemmy, but over the past year, I feel like the vibe has changed and I haven't been enjoying it as much.
I'm far more active on Lemmy, I'd say 10x, than I was on Reddit.
Why is that? I think it's because I feel like the few communities i'm part of here are places for actually sharing and learning from each other, with the same folks that you know you'll see again. Not just random spraying of posts and replies everywhere in numbers so huge that everyone kind of disappears in the ether.
i even started to avoid some political posts on reddit before i was summarily suspended permanently, but in any case any comment wouldve gotten drown out by thousands others anyways.
Nope. Honestly though Lemmy helped me with my Reddit addiction. Haven’t been on Reddit in years and only occasionally engage with Lemmy during the week. Supplanted both with reading bootleg manga, ha ha ha.
Same here. I was honestly worried when I left Reddit. Which worried me even more. Once I moved to lemmy, I still use it, obviously, but I often go a few days between opening it. I’ve found I take my phone out less when I’m sitting, my overall screen time went down to like an hour and change a day, and I don’t miss it.
I read comment sections to the end on lemmy, which I haven't done on reddit in probably a decade
Because there are fewer comments? Or because they're more worthwhile?
For me it's because I'm not reading the same top comment on virtually every post. I used to always skip top comment because it was just a copied comment to a repost, but eventually it got so silly I had to read halfway down to get any original thoughts. Now that we're in a world where there's so much bot generated content and it isn't affecting lemmy in largely the same way as the other social media platforms, it's even more apparent.
To the other repliers point, contrarian commentary isn't censored as heavily and power tripping mods to get named and shamed from what I've seen from my perspective - that said I am a heavy reader instead of commentator so I have my own set of biases.
yes
lemmy def lacks mutli paragraph comments threads. more than two sentences here is a long comment.
i liked reading thought out ideas and opinions. very few threads i've seen here have those. and often they are downvoted because they are not supporting the lemmy default viewpoints... which are mostly of the soundbite length.
that said, people aren't getting banned for those comments like they would on reddit. and i'm not getting banned for replying to them.
Nope. Making Reddit as mildly addictive as it was likely took more than just a generic application of the type.
In that way, Lemmy's development motivations make this platform (IMO) a lot healthier, because it wasn't purposefully tweaked into something addictive by a group of sociopaths holding boring dystopia meetings looking to appease the shareholders or the ownership.
I recently got permanently suspended from Reddit. I still read there, because there's so much more content than here.
I don't engage here as much as I did there, because the communities I'm interested in just don't exist here, or are very quiet.
I'm spending less time on both, because of that.
I try to because I want to support the FediVerse
Same. But honestly reddit was more fun than here.
I'm stuck here & loyal now. Because am irreversibly permabanned from Reddit.
Let's make Lemmy fun.
Most of the "fun" on reddit was fake because 85% of all posts & users are bots.
So Lemmy is a breath of fresh air from all that mental manipulation.
Lemmy is really growing on me as I can see there's discussion when it comes to the current events, I like to read real opinions and viewpoints on from others outside of my bubble, reddit and X both are too bot riddled for me to personally for that use. I still do go on reddit often for local content as it's a better source of upcoming events and whats going on around the city than the actual local news agencies.
Short answer, no.
There just isn't as much content to scroll, and there's no accomodations for separating communities by interest. Allegedly, piefed fixes this but I haven't tried yet.
I'd like it if I could keep my news feed separate from my technology feed separate from my porn feed separate from gaming feed separate from you get the idea. Since it's all blended together, it's harder to stay on the platform. The same complaint applies to yourube, by the way.
You can make or follow feeds on Piefed, allowing you to separate out your subscriptions.
Subjectively more, but that could also be due to lemmy having much less content than my doomscrolling needs, so I open it every 5-20 mins and check (also Mastodon). And that feels like much more time than one few-hour session on Reddit.
From how often I see your comments, I can certainly tell you're a regular visitor. :P
Damn I'm not a visitor, I'm the host
No. But I can't post on reddit anymore since they banned me for updooting Luigi posts. So lame and anto-free speech.
I use both, but I use stealth for reddit so I'm not logged in. But, I can actually comment on lemmy with third party apps.
I spend more time on Lemmy, by far.
The only two subs on Reddit I still visit somewhat frequently for local news are enshittifying fast. The jokes were stale 10 years ago, now they've gone almost fully decomposed. Also, I recently encountered a thread that seemed to be 90% bot traffic, with uncannily mismatched questions and answers.
Not to mention every thread everywhere on Reddit sooner or later will mention Trump, Musk, or American politics and culture in general, making me lose all interest.
Nope! Lemmy lacks the dark patterns that kept me scrolling reddit far longer than I meant to.
i think its the repeating posts, no new content. reddit is like the drink saturated with sugar so much, you can feel the granules of sugar. while lemmy is "sweetener" level.
Yes.
I have an app on my phone for usage limits, and for social media I have that set for 1 hour. I rarely hit the limit nowadays, but Lemmy is more than capable of taking up that time unless I have a super specific question in a niche hobby
Yes.
On Reddit I had two specific groups i visited and thats it.
Here I tend to browse and read ALL, as there's not enough traffic in the grouos I am interested in.
I scroll until I see the same posts on other instances, so no. Quite a bit less. Scrolling too deep, no matter the sort method, eventually shows me the same 75-150 cross posts.
Yes, because I was primarily a lurker while I was on Reddit... Lurked on Lemmy for a year too but not anymore, so I spend more time on here
Not really, I stop in and chat a bit on posts I find interesting. On Reddit I doomscrolled.
I spend a little less on average due to the slower flow of content.
But I spend more time writing somewhat in depth comments and actually interacting with lemmy, I'd wager. Reddit was high volume but outside of my niche mechanics subreddits I wouldn't comment much more than memes and one liners.
quite less actually, since theres less content, plus i blocked alot of people lemmy for obvious trolling, tanking, which lemmy has very little users already. so i just wait til later in the night to acess lemmy. on reddit i was on it every chance i could get.
No, I like reading and writing here, but I spend a lot of time watching short videos. It's a constant bombardment of interesting facts (mixed with some news, memes, trends...); it's stimulating.
As I avoid Reddit like the plague? Yeah.
I don't comment or vote on reddit anymore. I use them both a similar amount I'd think. If I ever have to do research into a topic though the answer is almost always on reddit.
reddit keeps track of it apparently, downvote, commenting and posting, they try to arbitrarily(through Ai) to see if your a bot, or spamming.
Yeah these days it feels a lot more high stakes to do anything on reddit since if you vote on the wrong thing you can get banned and if you comment on the wrong thing you can also get banned lmao. Easiest option is to just not participate.
Yup. Mostly because reddit was mostly about mmos for me and then pathfinder but im on the fediverse more generally.
Way less, because there isn't nearly the amount of content here.
I spend about as much time as I did on reddit, but it depends on how the content is day to day.
I still read certain things on reddit when search engines take me there, but that's mainly for niche things that aren't super popular here. Mainly the Gloryhammer and AllTheMods subs tbh.
Same for me! For niche hobbies, Reddit still has a lot of valuable older information. That might change though.
More time than new reddit, less time than old reddit.
I was pretty active in comments for the first 8 years or something. Had a post or two hit front page.
No dinosaurs bringing up Digg?
About the same for me. Can't possibly use it more than 24/7 without doing Superman levels of physics fuckery to add more days to the week. 🤷♂️
I probably spend about the same amount of time here as I did on Reddit.
I only ever used Reddit via web, but on Lemmy I have Mlem, which has increased my mobile use a ton
No, but that's because I add a lot of friction so I don't spend much time on social media. So I only access Lemmy by website from my phone. It's pretty inconvenient, just the way I want it.
I read things on Reddit sometimes (using Eddrit or RedLib) to narrate for Cocules Reddit Readings. Otherwise, I don't even use Reddit (nor do I have an account on that toxic slop).
I don't spend any time on this website at all because I have 1 billion dollars.
I ditched read it when they broke the API haven't been back since. I spend the same amount of time that I used to spend on Reddit on here maybe less as there is less content.
Less content, but less toxic too
I dunno. Lemmy.ml is pretty toxic too.
I've found it's less toxic if you agree with everyone
But if you were to log into Lemmy as a conservative or pro capitalist I think the toxicity would ratchet up instantly, even if you tried to discuss in "good faith"
Same here, I think. I spend less time here, but time spent is of more quality.
Same here too. I only ever checkit for niche communities and sometimes not even that.
