Trump Orders US Troops to Portland, Authorizes ‘Full Force’

“At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists,” Trump said Saturday in a post on Truth Social. “I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary.”

I guess because Portland is "War ravaged," whatever that means and because he says so is as close as we're getting to reason.

Any reason he could give is fabricated. Also, Portland in particular is more than just the usual "collapsing the Republic into a fascist dictatorship" thing he has going on. He's still butthurt about Portland from 2020.

ICE operates out of a building south of downtown and there have been a handful of protestors camping out and protesting in front of the building 24/7 since June. The protestors have been for the most part peaceful, the ICE agents however have been violent, beating protestors, aiming guns at them, shooting them with pepper balls and gas cannisters, and deploying a variety of unknown chemical gasses.

The grade school next door to the ICE building had to move because of concerns over exposing the kids to those chemicals. The residents of the apartment buildings across the street aren't so lucky. Portland's own police department recently testified under oath that ICE has been instigating violence over the protestors.

There's a movement to evict ICE from the building. Just the other day, ICE was found to have committed over 20 violations of the agreement they had struck with the city in order to operate from that location this year alone. I wouldn't be surprised if the escalation from Trump is in response to that.

Yeah, but the news and a variety of websites go out of their way to either pretend there are no protests in Portland or to mischaracterize them. You need a back up plan for getting news to the people if you want the optics to reflect the truth.

Neither the White House nor the Pentagon immediately responded to requests for comment.

Ongoing protests outside Portland’s federal ICE detention facility have escalated tensions between local officials, federal authorities, and demonstrators. Oregon lawmakers have criticized what they describe as mistreatment of detainees, while the city has challenged the facility with a land-use violation. DHS has deployed federal agents to Portland in response.

The protests, led in part by antifascist activists, have at times turned violent. Federal officials have condemned the actions, while Antifa-linked groups continue to call for more demonstrations, including solidarity rallies in nearby cities.

On Monday, the Trump administration designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, although the order holds no force of law because terrorist designations apply only to foreign-based actors and Antifa is an ideology whose adherents stage protests but under no organization or leader.

Outside of anti-ICE protests, a violent-crime report by the Major Cities Chiefs Association for the first half of 2025 showed a 50% drop in homicides in Oregon’s largest city, according to KATU, the ABC affiliate in Portland. The city has also seen a decline in reported rapes, aggravated assaults and robberies, the report said.

But also as a Portland resident, we all own lots of guns and generally hate ICE - this will not end well.

Technically the Freikorps would be more akin to groups like the Proudboys or Oathkeeprs. The analogy for ICE/Homeland Security agents/Federalized National Guard would be Gestapo.
