List of car-free islands
A bunch of Croatian inhabited islands are car free because their ports are too small for big ferries and the islands themselves can be crossed by foot in less than an hour.
That sounds like a nice place to live. Hook me up with some fibre and I'll work from home on my little Croatian island
Croatia mentioned, woo 🇭🇷🇭🇷🇭🇷
Quebec too, woo! Well, not really because it's not a country, but we're there.
I mean I was surprised to see it having so many entries.
But then I realised I've been to one of the islands listed and it has no roads in the first place, it's hardly an achievement to not have cars on it too. So now I'm wondering if the list is actually meaningful at all...
not yet…

There's lots of "nearly car free" places as well. Venice for instance only has cars on a small section of the large island.
Quite incomplete I'd say, Sanshan island in China (inside Tai Lake / Taihu) is also car free. Only some electric threewheelers are permitted to transport goods between the 3 villages
Do golf carts count? If not, then I believe Protection Island, just off of Nanaimo BC, should also be on the list.
It’s Wikipedia. Please update.
I would say they count as a car.
I checked and there's a Wikipedia page on the island -- apparently cars aren't banned, just very uncommon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protection_Island_%28Nanaimo%29
I didn't realize Mackinac Island's lack of cars was that unique. Ironically, we're the same state that's the birthplace of the American car industry
Schiermonnikoog in the Netherlands isn't really car-free though
It's Wikipedia. Please update.
Wikipedia defines car-free islands as “islands inhabited by humans which have legally restricted or eliminated vehicle traffic from their territories.”
Schiermonnikoog qualifies as car-free, since driving is prohibited unless one has been granted special dispensation.
That being said, although high on my list, I haven't visited yet, so I can't say how common cars really are.
