Is the number of Lemmy users increasing?

In recent weeks, I have posted an absolutely staggering amount of content on Lemmy.

My goal is simply to support the platform. I hate huge corporations.

Now I'm taking a break. I won't post anything or I'll post very little (I still feel a little guilty!! Who will post new content 😢?)

But I need to focus on improving my own life and relax.

However... I'm just curious.

Is the number of Lemmy users actually increasing, decreasing, or staying the same? Is that data even available?

- PieFed MAUs increased by 400% though - when lemm.ee went down a LOT of people abandoned Lemmy in favor of PieFed.
  
  I don't even know what is fundamentally different between Lemmy and Piefed aside from Piefed's web interface. AFAIK, they're basically the same thing but Lemmy is primarily developed by a harmful douche. 🫤

  Can confirm, used to have an account on lemm.ee, switched to PieFed just before lemm.ee went down.
  
  PieFed is currently at ~1.7k MAU, last month it was 1.6k. I suppose the 400% increase is over and that was just some people from lemm.ee, any significant future increase will most likely come from people switching instead of new users. Lemmy dropped from 54k MAU in April down to 41k.

  Its not like we cant all get what we want. Some will want lemmy, some will want piefed, some will want mastodon/kbin/mbin/etc...etc... Posts/comments show up in all. Its nice to have options.

  The graphs there for posts and comments are for count of posts on lemmy directly, total, not per month. The posts/month seems stagnant, although its hard to tell as the data shown there is burried by a couple of bot instances that completely hide the overall trend.

- Lemm.ee still only recently shut down. Their users made new accounts which would have looked like a bump and then decease when lemm.ee accounts were no longer accessible.
  
  Unless they went to PieFed - which many did - and then it would look like a net decrease on those charts for Lemmy.
- piefed is its own category there, but kbin/mbin might be included in "lemmy" - I didn't dive deeper.
  piefed is growing recently but it's not in the millions ;)
  
  Mbin has <1k monthly active users. Kbin has <100 total, and if you dig deeper, only one server (in Poland) self-reports as using Kbin.
  No PieFed is not included in "Lemmy" in this software b/c it looks at the software that the instance reports as using.
  Even Lemmy is not in the millions, its peak was ~55k MAUs somewhere in Spring of 2024. Well, the "posts" counts could be in the millions (according to the Lemmy stats page it was 12.2 million a couple months ago), but those stats can be fairly misleading, so I typically only ever go by monthly active users that seems verifiably closer to what people actually see happening. e.g. so very MANY people have alt accounts all across the Fediverse so the total number of accounts is highly misleading, but the number of "active" ones seems more reliable? (even then it could be an over-counting, especially if bots are active and being counted as well)
  40k MAUs is barely even a highly active sub over on Reddit.
  Even Mastodon only reports ~700k MAUs, and falling, though at its peak it was closer to 2 million. They really dropped the ball on making the software easier to use - unlike Lemmy (and Mbin and PieFed), each Mastodon instance does NOT show posts from other Mastodon instances, by default - or at least that was true for an exceedingly long time though I thought it was going to change this summer iirc? Maybe that change only affected "searching" for posts though? I don't use Mastodon so don't really care - but I understand why people prefer BlueSky, b/c for them centralization is the point, if that is what it takes to make the software actually work.
  A LOT of the criticisms that people on Reddit have about Lemmy actually pertain to Mastodon rather than Lemmy in particular.
  The entire federated concept really was not ready for mainstream deployment, at the time of the Rexodus. We here are those with the "early adopter" mindset, which is very much different than the mainstream normie one.

No, the MAU (which is what I assume you meant) seems to be going down very slowly. Though it probably will start going up once again someday. Possibly when the new digg is released to the public or when Reddit pulls another shit that not even the current Redditors will be able to tolerate.
I personally don't have a problem with the current state. I like it here. I recognize lots of people every day comment and post. It feels cozy.

  Another factor is this year's canvas and last year's.

Its been at a pretty consistent 50k which means we retained 25% of the users from our peak. Its 37.5k at the moment with 1.8k on piefed. There is another 18k users once NodeBB federations integrates.
Its a decent little community, enough to be self sufficient and enough for new users to feel like they arent joining a ghost town.

I was worried at first that Lemmy would be basically dead compared to Reddit. But holy hell, its active enough and its qualitatively better than Reddit could ever be. I never realized how shit it was until I actually decided to leave permanently.
- Yep on reddit I'd just end up scrolling for ages. Here I actually have conversations with people, you get to know people which I really like.
- Many of us stopped actually "engaging" on Reddit long before we finally left it - the amount of trolls just waiting to pounce on anything at all that was said just got too damn high!
  There are (so MANY!) trolls here too, but you can block them all and then breathe an enormous sigh of relief and finally enjoy the rest - I am saying that here that is at least possible, whereas on Reddit it just simply was not.
  
  I haven't encountered a troll yet and the encountered bots so far are useful repost bots. Reddit is just filled with obnoxious people that I couldn't stand, moderators with small dick energy that moderate to whatever rules they prefer (like permanent bans for using very common non-targeted slurs) and just annoying trolls on subs like WorldNews and Canada that get away with racist shit all the time.

Nice one for posting so much! I'm a prolific poster as well but you've got me beat. It's a lot of work but I love to see people happily chatting here. I've no clue if it's quieter atm overall, but don't know that lemmy will fail. There's enough of us atm, and not many alternatives.

I believe it’s is slowly going down over time. But this is going at such a slow rate that reddit enshitification might lead more people to here in the future before there is no more great content on here.

- reddit resorted to using more shadowban purges instead of sitewide bans to slow the number of people leaving the site, SB people often dont realized they been banned at least for a while.(i wonder if they realized thier sitewide purges is doing mroe damage to them then they admit, thats why shadowbans replaced the blatant purges.

- I’ve posted like 1.2k comments in a matter of 6 months. My account is 2 years old, but I went back to Reddit shortly after. So I was silent for a Year or two

Slowly going down. The learning curve is too steep for the general population (personal opinion, happy to debate).
- I wonder how much of that decrease is a result of instances shutting down and their users migrating off of Lemmy to platforms like PieFed and others. The users may not be completely gone, just not on Lemmy.

I've seen so many users still using AOL, Yahoo or ISP email accounts that were created for them automatically; they can't figure out basic things like setting up Gmail with MFA or downloading Outlook for work from the app store. More importantly, they just don't care; their eyes glaze over the moment you mention something like encryption (hacker talk to them) or privacy (you must be hiding something). They cannot tell the difference between Firefox or Chrome (all browsers are Internet Explorer). And these people are college educated doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc without a clue how technology works. I've changed the Chrome or Firefox icon to Internet Explorer on thousands of computers because even after giving them tutorial after tutorial, as soon as I leave the site, they are clicking that damn blue E and loading up MSNBC... </rant>

- I believe that is more valid for Mastodon instances than for Lemmy ones.
  Except that you are still correct in the operational sense that most will not bother. See e.g. the migration to BlueSky rather than Mastodon.
  PieFed really might make for a qualitative shift though, in offering so many options such as categories of communities (akin to multi-Reddits), and polling, and flairs (both user and post) that Reddit users were used to and it makes them feel really like they are "slumming it" coming over to Lemmy that lacks all of that. The categories of communities and user-customizable and shareable feeds in particular really help with "content discovery", as too does PieFed's wizard that walks a first-time user through the process of setting up and joining what the user indicates that they are interested in.
  In contrast, Lemmy users are supposed to go... (somewhere? but where? where are these "somewhere"s ever mentioned? on a side-bar somewhere? extremely rarely I would believe they might be, but the vast majority of the time usually not) to find the content that they want to see. Often they end up browsing All rather than Subscribed, and get so frustrated with that that they simply leave Lemmy altogether, and then report their complaints over in r/RedditAlternatives. PieFed solved that particular problem though, as well as several others, so at this point I think any discussion about "the learning curve" needs to be split into one for Lemmy, where it really does remain too complicated for the average Reddit non-technical normie, vs. PieFed where it does not anymore.
  And I need to be careful or else this will turn into a HUGE tangent, but also the political extremism and bOtH sIdEs SaMe-ism on "Lemmy" is an enormous turn-off for people as well. Yes they can block each troll on an individual basis, or the same with communities, no they can't TRULY block an entire instance (that horribly mis-named function would have been better termed a "community muting" rather than "instance blocking", which still allows comments from users on that instance to appear everywhere else, plus able to reply and even trigger notifications, etc. - IT IS NOT A BLOCK). Anyway, how this relates is that mainstream non-technical normies just get overwhelmed, and don't enjoy the political extremism having to be an opt-out rather than opt-in feature, with most of the ways presented by the software to opt-out not TRULY opting "out" rather than merely claiming to do so. In contrast, one of the first things that PieFed does is to set up a block-list of keywords, offering the options All, None, and even a third one Some to allow the content at a lower frequency. I have never put any words into it... but I appreciate that the feature exists, for the sake of those who want / need it to be able to enjoy their social media of choice.
  I predict that for all these reasons plus a few others, Lemmy will continue to die off. The die-hard userbase seems not to care actually, even being oddly proud of this? While PieFed - which just increased its userbase +400% - will continue to grow, and maybe PieFed will actually be the thing that captures more of the Reddit users. Lemmy certainly will not be, nor Mbin, and I cannot say for certain that PieFed will, just that it seems to me to be the only thing that possibly could (Sublinks seems dead in the water atm, due to the primary - only? - dev having a baby).

From what I've seen, no - the number of people actually regularly on here is going down, as I'm just seeing the same people more and more. When I use voyager you can see when your personal upvote/downvote score for every user on every one of their posts, and I'm mostly seeing people with a != 0 score, meaning I've interacted with their comments before. Means I'm not frequently seeing new people.
People like me who came here to escape the reddit bullshit of authoritarian power hungry mods and admins, insane censorship of anything right of "far left", and reinforcements of echo chambers through moderation, quickly found out that, if anything, Lemmy is already worse in some regards than reddit.

  It's not. But mods generally just ban/threaten you if you post anything they disagree with. just like reddit. they have an agenda and if you are not on board with it 100% you are to be purged.
  for example i've been banned from multiple lemmy communities because I dared to disagreed with the 'autism/non NT make you superior' narrative quite a few communities here were pushing. or questioning the 'perfection' of Linux...

  But if you for example question why they are using Plex (which isnt foss) they deflect by saying Jellyfin is not secure enough.

I do feel it’s increasing, and not to mention, I love scrolling through Lemmy more than Reddit these past few days, I noticed.
- One thing I've noticed is that on reddit, if I post a comment it'll get either zero votes or a thousand, with next to no correlation between the number and how useful or well thought-out the comment was. On Lemmy it seems a lot more consistent, as though people here are actually paying attention? That and/or The Dreaded Algorithm hits a lot harder on Reddit.
  
  Yep, I agree… that was what I noticed too… plus, some did mention that it was the bots who upvoted/downvoted on Reddit posts and comments, so was there any real interaction, or? I was confused, really.

It appears that Twitter users are migrating to Bluesky, while simultaneously engaging with Reddit and Discord. Meanwhile, Reddit users are making their way to Lemmy or maybe not I exacly don't how but LEMMY IS GOING UPP.

Lemmy will never really grow beyond what it is now. Even if there was another influx of users, the retention rate is going to be low and the amount of active users is going to be even lower. It will forever remain a niche platform for 3 reasons:
It's made by and for people on the far left, tech/privacy nerds, and people who have been kicked out of Reddit. Because of this, the actual active users on here tend to fall into of these 3 groups, and they define Lemmy's culture, and this includes the developers. Because of this, much of content on here revolve around niche topics and so there isn't much here to appeal to the mainstream.
It is fundamentally flawed by design. There are bunch of different communities on different instances about the same topic, and there is no way to consolidate them. Because of this, you have a bunch of dead communities that operate as independent nodes, instead of having centralized communities that are big and active. This issue would've been solved if Lemmy was designed to have each instance be a community in of itself (AskLemmy has its own instance and so does tech, gaming, and so on), but instead we have the current implementation.
Lemmy has many of the problems that drive people away from Reddit. Sure, Lemmy isn't a greedy corporation, which is nice, but it still has terminally online powermods with little to no accountability, a hostile and negative community, weird/extreme echo chambers that make most people cringe, and so on. If you sign up for Lemmy, you're going to get the same problems but with a worse experience because it's way smaller and has less content, so why would you come to Lemmy instead of making another Reddit account?
I just don't see Lemmy every becoming mainstream or overtaking Reddit. It's already been 6 years since the start of Lemmy's development, and 2 years since the big influx of users from Reddit's API fiasco, and it STILL has to rely on the same dozen or so people spamming the platform to keep it barely active. Lemmy won't collapse, but it also won't be more than what it is now, at least not any time soon.
- About #2: you have any suggestion on how you could achieve that and still be federated?
  It seem like you would need a central "oficial" instance that defines who is the "real" AskLemmy, etc...
  But yeah, I really want to hear if you have ideas on how achieve this and maintain it as a federation.
  
  If I were to redesign Lemmy, I would design it be like Reddit, but without the corporate centralization, so basically each subreddit would be it's own instance, and they can federate or defedarate with other subreddits. I wouldn't design it to where each instance tries to be it's own full fledged Reddit alternative like right now. That's a much cleaner design, but the big issue with it is that hosting the instances is a pain and so most people can't do it.
  Therefore, my much more realistic alternative, is to add tags. Each community would have a limited number of relevant tags (could be required to create a community), and users can view and follow these tags. These tags would help streamline all these different communities across Lemmy under one label, which is the result we're trying to achieve. I would also add another tab on the home feed called "tags" where users can view and filter all the posts from the all tags they follow.
- I feel like part of it also is that Lemmy isn't designed for anywhere near the traffic that Reddit gets. For instance, Lemmy maintained Reddit's mod power structure based on mod service length.
  Also Lemmy hasn't really done a lot to build spam fighting measures. If the user base grows 10x the current size, I can see spam becoming a bigger problem which could affect usability.
  
  While I agree with you that Lemmy is vulnerable to spam, I don't think it'll a problem any time soon. Even if the userbase grows ten fold, that would still only be around 350k users. That's not enough to attract any major attention. Any spam Lemmy would get would come internally from users feuding with the devs or each other.

Appearently the algorithm of Reddit has become shit this last days
- That + I have begun to loathe the average “user” there + the Admin AI bot decided my comment making commentary on Reddit’s generally poor culture through very thick ironic language constituted “harassment” and perma-banned me. My 14 year old account - 2 “offenses” (one was valid) and it’s gone. I’ve appealed but it has been 8 days with no action.
  It’s also just “people” parroting the same cold take like it’s hot over and over to farm karma. Yes Trump sucks, yes Epstein files need to be released, yes progressive policy, but like cmon, can we have SOME days where we can escape and just enjoy the internet guys? IRL is miserable enough lmao.
  Ban-happy power tripping mods, recycled low-effort content, a generally discouraging attitude toward nuanced takes and critical thinning, and an absurd amount of bots and propaganda has really made me want to migrate. Anyways I’m here now, and I hope to contribute to this platform in a constructive and positive way! I welcome any pointers or advice!

  You might want to block some keywords then, as there's also a lot of American politics on Lemmy. You can filter most of it that way.

not really, since the great purges in the spring thats where we had a huge boost, the shadowbans and sitewide ban seemed to have died down for now, although the SB are increasing in the background, we might see another increase if reddit does another major purge. although instances dying ive seen less content overall(especially with ee gone)
- One of the main things that drove me away from Reddit was the sense that they're really pushing the buttons to hone it into a pure content creation service for AI bros and advertisers.
  That is to say, most subs do not want you just hanging out and chatting to people like they're your friends. You have to generate content, and you have to do it in the approved sub format, and if you don't like it you can fuck off. So, I fucked off.
  
  its also harder now, if your a new user, or inactive user who suddenly became active. so subreddits have cqs scores, karma,content history requirements. you can easily get shadowbanned if you somehow trigger the filters, also the fact that they do it so indiscriminately it catches innocent account. i was visiting the shadowban sub recently, and someone posted they were unbanned because reddits AI mistankengly shadowbanned them, for "assuming and misconstruing his posts, as offensive"

I would agree. And I'm spreading the word. We need to break our dependency on huge corporations. It's just laziness.

  For one thing PieFed was only centralized for a bit there at its start, whereas now there are already numerous piefed instances. It is true that piefed.social is still the #1 instance (much as lemmy.world had 80% of the Lemmy userbase at some point - but you still remain there even now so that does not seem to bother you?), but now piefed.blahaj.zone (not even 3 months old yet!!!!!), and piefed.world each have >100 active users, and piefed.ca, feddit.online, piefed.zip, quokk.au, piefed.au, etc. each have multiple tens of users.
  More to the point, PieFed is FOSS. You could download the code and have your own personal instance spun up by the end of the day tomorrow.
  I am guessing that you mean that the opinions of a single dev (Rimu) have an exagerated effect on the development of the code - which was definitely true in the past, but he also listens to feedback, apologies when he is wrong, and is amenable to going in other directions when the community wants that. The private voting debacle is one such example: I argued against it from the start, but he did it anyway, then abolished it and apologized to people when it received heavy criticism. You can read a really frank discussion about the topic where dbzer0 was considering whether to make a PieFed instance. Look especially at the comment starting with "I don’t trust Piefed at all - they’re far too eager to curate my experience, and they’ve reintroduced all of the reputation anti-features (plus more) that were part of what drove me away from Reddit and the absence of which is part of what I like about Lemmy and Mbin."
  TLDR: it was a new project back then, and things were different. Also you might be unaware of the history of the development of Lemmy too, and of lemmy.world. These things are common, and nowhere close to be unique to PieFed. BlueSky on the other hand is corporate and so WILL be enshittified, eventually. PieFed on the other hand is just a better Lemmy :-).

I don't really have a whole lot of content to contribute. Although, I've been saving porn images, gifs, and videos to my hard drive for like... maybe about 2 decades? I've been thinking about posting some of that.
