You've got to remember that you and I are not the average Democratic primary voter. Clearly there are plenty of Democrats who think this is a good idea.
You should read the article. In the pole referenced Newsom is in 6th place. He got a higher than expected percentage of the poling which the author has blown up here with their deceptive clickbaity headline. Possibly in an effort to make people think that Newsom is the favorite.
Not that I'd be really happy to vote for the actual favorite in the pole which is Kamala Harris. Though I would absolutely vote for her over Newsom any day of the week.

I'm appreciating Newsom as a foil to Trump, and want him to continue that, but I really wouldn't want him to be the Democratic nominee. I'd much rather have a Mamdani-esque nominee

He's just another slimy corporatist owned by the ultra wealthy, but throws a bone to the social issues of Democrats. Pretty much the same strategy that modern Democrats have had for the past 40+ years. I will absolutely vote for him in the general or support him in pushing against Trump/Repulicans, but he's one of my least favorite Democrats now.

There's a toxic impulse among some centrists, the kind of folks that the label "Blue MAGA" applies to. This toxic impulse is to take a very Big Brother or Trumpian approach to politics. Circle the wagons. Support the leadership no matter what. Don't try to improve the party or make sure the best candidate wins. Don't focus on holding bad actors accountable. Just vote for dear leader and everything will be fine.
