lemmy.world had difficulty handling new account registration when I tried moving from Reddit in June 2023, so I tried to find/join other instances. People said "it doesn't matter which instance you join."

Oh it definitely mattered.

  • If I remember correctly, I had joined at a similar time. Not this account though, this one is fairly new. But I ended up going for Blahaj Zone and Beehaw. I went back and forth between the two, but in the end I think both of these were the right choice. The biggest issue I have with the latter is... It's missing some pretty big federation, like Lemmy.World notably, and that's kind of an issue for me. It makes the "all" timeline really quiet and kind of dull.

In the end, I think Blahaj is my home for many reasons, but I do remember Beehaw being quite recommended back then. It's a great community and I really do enjoy their principles, in terms of rules and everything. When I was looking for what community to join, and people talking about it on Reddit, there was a bunch of, it doesn't really matter, which is bullshit, it actually really does matter, in my opinion, but, uh, yeah. Beehaw came up enough for me to go there on my first account.

As for the drama, I have missed out on all of it. Like, people are talking about Hexbear, I have no idea what happened with that. In terms of drama, all I personally remember was the kind of like big panic over the threadiverse because of the mass influx from Reddit users, which I am on one of but that's pretty much it. That being said, I personally do remember that most people had already some kind of apprehension towards Lemmy.ml. At least in my corner. Lemmygrad I've only learned of recently.

    • Beehaw was great until I realised how dogmatic they are. There was a thread asking disabled people if they were happy with their disability, and I replied no, I was not.

Anyone who was not happy with their disability was banned or something, ridiculous.

Switched over to SJW since I appreciate the openness of the admins and community. Naturally this community requires a lot of special attention and there have been multiple times where SJW admins have had to step in to assist

  • I disagree with this, I feel like people tend to rewrite history in their brains, especially with this one, since it has the 2023 date.

Looks like lemmy.ml was a relatively normal place for a while before hexbear tried to refederate with the fediverse, that was a torrent of diarrhea, yes, but they quieted down a while after. The major turning point was when hamas attacked Israel on Oct 7th that year and everything Israel has done ever since. Then that infighting took over and destroyed any rational discourse in lemmy.ml.

I've seen this happen with subreddits too also with the Gaza topic. It is the best way to nuke any lefty community.

    • Eh… it was never normal. There was always tons of unhinged propaganda on there. But for a few months the influx of activity was apparently too much for the power tripping mods to handle and one could debate and have conversations about the facts. Eventually though they caught up and started banning everyone and now it’s the absolute shit show you see today.

      • I caught my first ban from a .ml community just the other day.

They were cheering because Niger's military dictatorship seized control of a gold mine that had been operated by an Australian mining firm.

They framed it as "noble natives throwing off a foreign oppressor" when the reality is a local oppressor is just moving in for a larger cut of the money.

They were stanning so hard for the dictatorship, to the point of outright lying and claiming that the dictator was a "duly elected representative democracy".

Fuck no, it isn't. Niger, and the Sahel states, are full-on military dictatorships. They're making a big show out of kicking out foreign businesses (which are already withdrawing due to the sanctions), and mostly kicking out or just killing foreign journalists.

Niger is actually hiring foreign mercenary groups, including the remnants of the Wagner Group. The Neo-Nazis who were mad that Russia was sending them into a meat grinder in Ukraine, so they tried a coup, that failed miserably.

Anyway, my account was banned, and my comments erased, Well, some of them. mostly the ones where I pointed out that the people will never see a dime of the gold mine's output, because dictators tend to spend on themselves first and foremost.

    • Nah, I have been around long before that and .ml has been a shit show the entire time. The recent thread on asklemmy is a perfect example of how they have always operated. A new user asked why support for Russia is so widespread on Lemmy, so Diva, Davel and Cowbee sprang into action to call the user a brainwashed imperialist, banned them, and spent the rest of the the thread jerking each other off.

It could have easily been a thread from my first month on .ml. This is just what they do. The only shocking thing is that Dessalines didn't jump on the pile too.

    • .ml was always tankie, it was even advertised as such. The community tried to mask their bigotry and extremism when all the Reddit refugees came over, but there were too many Liberals so the devs brought in hexbear with the sole purpose of removing liberals from tankie spaces

    • It is the best way to nuke any lefty community.

      How, exactly?

      • Top to bottom single topic. Nothing else matters, nothing else discussed, nothing else happens, no thought, just despair, hate and circlejerk in what used to be ideologically diverse communities with some inherent contrarianism and debate.

      • I personally don't like using left-right terminology because it doesn't have a place in my country.

But leftists tend to die due to purity. If you're not 100 percent on board with current thing, then you're out.
