Thoughts on Sumeru

Now that Fontaine is out and the story line for Sumeru is done, I wanted to see what everyone thought on Sumeru. My sister and I were talking and noticed more negative opinions as of recent.

Overall I thought the story was mid. I was definitely tired of Nahida by 3.4. Mostly tired since it felt similar to Yae or Ayato whenever we see them. They are 5 steps ahead but for Nahida it felt more like she has a problem, you help her, she figures it out midway through quest but doesn't say anything then mentions it at the end.

It would've been nice if they added the underground map feature earlier as well. I would be running in circles since I have a terrible sense of direction lol.

The last thing I've noticed is the issue with making characters one note. It was an issue in Inazuma but has gotten worse as of late.

Want to see what other people like and disliked with Sumeru

  • I only finished the Archon quest line of Sumeru and it's pretty average, not that the other three regions were any better. I still found myself skipping so much of the dialogue because they felt really boring and dragging. I hope the sidequests are good. Considering the size of the map and how the Archon quest covers only a small portion of it, I'm guessing that's where the best parts are.

    I'm enjoying Fontaine for now though. Although I think some of the sequences are stupid sometimes, at least I pay a bit more attention to what's happening.

  • Having the underground map feature earlier definitely would have been helpful. Also less stuff locked behind the Aranara quest - they're cute but holy f those quests were easily the worst of Sumeru for me. The Aranara quests were the first time I actually didn't read all of the dialoge because all of these -nara, -bara, -tara, whatevara words made it extremely tedious to follow. As for the archon quest the time loop thingy was sort of whatever, they could have shortened it a bit without making the overall plot worse imo. It wasn't unbearably long, just sort of rather obvious pretty quickly.

    Other than that Sumeru is easily my favorite region though. The maps are gorgeous and I honestly don't mind the huge desert, as one half felt more like huge ruin exploration than anything else to me. The surprise inside the sandstorm from the second half is also a truly awesome area and I'm honestly sad we didn't get any reason to go back there after the quest (like big spots of specific resources).

    So far my personal ranking from best to worst region is:

    Sumeru

    Liyue = Inazuma

    big huge empty space

    Mondstadt

    I'm really hyped about how Fontaine will turn out, I'm loving what I saw so far.

  • Guess I'm in the minority here but I like it!

    I just finished the Aranara quest and I loved it...I am the type of person who like a long adventure so Sumeru is right up my alley.

    Since I'm from East Asia, names are not a problem for me and that made reading all the dialog much easier but I will say for such an integral quest, it really should have been narrated. The words in it are complicated to read and pronounce and I get the frustration of non-Indian people..."Ararakalari" doesn't roll off the tongue now does it.

    Last thing I'll say is the change in opinion after a region releade is typical of the genshin community. People burn themselves out with the same characters and scenery and then complain that the game is stale. I spend time all over Tevat because sometimes I get bored of my surroundings so it's nice to goes somewhere else every once in a while.
