As an American, I have no love for my country or its history. Europeans and their descendants around the globe, however, are quite hypocritical when it comes to the US. They have their own horrendous histories and currently do terrible things around the globe. They love to point to the US to take attention off of themselves, all while they enjoy taking US money and benefiting from the protection the US military industrial complex affords them. These benefits allow them to do wonderful things for their citizens, all while my brethren are held in bondage, murdered by the state and white supremacists, and homeless/ starving in our streets. It isn't too dissimilar to slave bonds. Europe condemned American slavery all while participating in the "slave bond" trade. Now they are all in a tizzy and butt hurt because the clown ass president said some mean things and started economic slap fights that primarily harm Americans. All that to say, anyone complaining about the US that isn't from Latin America, Africa, or certain Asian countries is just a hypocritical toddler throwing a tantrum.
America has had the capacity to care for its citizens for forever. It chooses not to, just as it chose to position itself as the world police. It's not because America has been too busy looking out for the EU militarily that there is no Universal Healthcare there. The story should really be a case of examining what North America vs Europe did after World War 2. America dismantled the protections of the New Deal, America caused the global financial crisis through Reganomics and neoliberalism. America is owned by fossil fuels and has suppressed nuclear power and renewable energy for almost 100 years. Now climate change is accelerating and causing global famine, drought and food shortages. American imperialism is just the same colonialism that Europe has been done with since 1945. Except now they beam propaganda into the heads of children 24hrs a day through the addictive technology and sophisticated profiling algorithms America created. People are not mad because tariffs, they're angry because America created this idea of a free global order and now we've been hamstringed into a plot. Orchestrated by American Corporatism, to collapse that same global order and disrupt our largely egalitarian, human rights focused society by igniting racial tensions around the world fueled by forced migration due to instability in that region caused by wars in the middle east driven by Corporate America's demand for oil. While America use the military superiority they have touted and expanded since then, on the basis of global peace, to threaten anyone who might question them and force politicians to give them cover for the extermination of brown people they're so thrilled about. FFS imagine the Nazis standing outside Auschwitz saying "These stupid Americans, they're so hypocritical. They don't see how badly we were sanctioned and blamed for world war 1. Why don't they see the hypocrisy in how they eliminated the native peoples during manifest destiny. They love to point to Germany to take attention off themselves."
I'm well aware of the issues in the US and caused by the government. Much of it affects me. My point is that Europe, Canada, and Australia have been happy to go along for the ride, as well as causing problems of their own. Now, every time I get on lemmy, I see these same people who have benefitted from these policies and actions saying "fuck ALL Americans," when there are so many of us that have been fighting this bullshit all while actually being victimized by our own government. Now that they're experiencing the slightest inconvenience, they want to cause an uproar and shit on everyone who happens to have been born here. It's hypocritical and gross. You didn't care before, so what changed? The only time I can recall in recent memory when any of these folks actually gave a shit about us was during the Floyd protests, which was certainly appreciated.
You forgot the part where the USA has been loudly proclaiming itself "the land of the free" or "the leader of the free world" for the last 60 years. Most Europeans know about the flaws of their countries, that's why you don't see them shoving their flag everywhere. The USA has been terrible to other countries and their own citizens for decades while touting "freedom" and "American dream". Now that the lie has been exposed you feel hurt, but don't blame Europe, Canada or Australia: do something to improve you country.
That isn't remotely close to what I said. Wow.
Not really.
true. could post it for last 250 and next 250. the us is the worst nation in the history of the world.
I just meant that America feeling like the center of the world's criticisms isn't the same as them being the center of the world's criticisms.
Really the rest of the world has said they're the worst during the Iraq invasion and subsequent tortures, and then there was a big gap, and now that same sentiment of "America is doing the worst thing right now" has only just been coming back recently (with the rise of Trumpian Fascism).
...so it's mostly when America shows its fascism that the world makes this complaint. Bush and Trump were both unprecedentedly bad times, and both on the right Republican side. The world had a point both times.
....but generally the rest of the world is off doing its own bad things, with huge gaps between saying America is doing "the worst thing right now".
