Best Lemmy comment so far
I also hate "happy cake day", and "this". Especially "this". It's a worthless comment that adds nothing more to the discussion than a simple upvote.
This
Trick to avoiding that is to never get gold. Took me 10 years to never get gold once. I'm good at what I don't do.
😂 this really annoys me on Quora. I never understood why one feels the necessity to do so.
I always thought that was a sign it was astroturfed. Like my post? Give Reddit money!
This may be an unpopular option since I've already seen it across lemmy, but the ____porn communities. I'd like to browse pictures of nice landscapes or exotic cars without worry about someone around me noticing "PORN" on my screen.
At this point it seems very old internet, something that made sense when those communities were established, but now is unnecessary gratuitous and not socially acceptable.
I saw a post about a community created here called "pixel passport" which I thought was a hell of a lot better that "earth porn."
EarthPixels. CarPixels. PornPixels. HistoryPixels. This could work.
I really like that name. Way better than Earthporn. Thank you for sharing, I subscribed!
Link: !pixelpassport@lemm.ee
Damn, I had forgotten how obnoxious that was on Reddit. Blocked all of those years ago because it was just unnecessary and a gross way to qualify otherwise unremarkable photos.
Do you mean actual NSFW content or things being called “ porn” like “unix porn” or “fight porn”?
not op but they mean the latter
Nothing like someone peaking over your shoulder and seeing you're browsing r/AnimalPorn....
I totally agree with you. Hopefully lemmy can be a little more mature with community names. (Yeah, yeah.. I know the hypocrisy of my username.. It's my gamertag)
There is (was?) a ”nosillysuffix” sub that would aggregate all those *porn subs.
I agree, but I also think that porn should still be welcome here. The issue is there needs to be better control over it entering the feeds, not that the communities themselves should be abolished.
I think the above commenter is referring to stuff like EarthPorn or FoodPorn or UnixPorn
I agree. I think it's terrible name, and ti just invites unnecessary drama.
Creative writing presented as truth
Oh man, this is something I definitely hope to never see again. I'm so tired of the unbelievable TIFUs, AITAs, and/or OffMyChests with thousands of upvotes that had obviously-fake stories.
The worst one (in recent history) was that TIFU with the student who slept with their professor's daughter.
Part 1: https://libreddit.de/r/tifu/comments/1379pge/tifu_by_hooking_up_with_professors_daughter/
Part 2: https://libreddit.de/r/tifu/comments/137u9bk/tifupdate_by_hooking_up_with_professors_daughter/
Part 3: https://libreddit.de/r/tifu/comments/1391lmj/tifupdate_i_cuckolded_my_professor/
I hope this kind of bullshit never happens here.
And all of the rage bait posts too (including in those subs).
I absolutely hate the love for revenge violence. Stuff like celebration people running over protestors in their cars because they were forced to stop on the road. Or bleeding out after someone got shot when they robbed a store.
This includes that fact that you can basically guarantee every thread contains at least one comment claiming "play stupid games, win stupid prizes"
I haaate "equal rights means equal lefts."
These dudes fantasize about a woman picking a fight with them so they can beat the shit out of one and have it be socially acceptable.
I saw one of those just before I left Reddit. A woman slapped a guy with her flat hand (they didn't show you why) and he knocked her unconscious. And Reddit was celebrating the guy 🤮.
While that would be ideal and it makes me feel a bit gross when I catch myself thinking the same things sometimes, it's inevitable. Retribution is one of the easiest ways to exact a punishment, violent or not.
r/the_donald or anything like it. Kindly fuck off with all of that shit.
too late.
At least they're hidden on their own instances
Comments like:
„This!“
Use the upvote button and shut up.
When someone would ask a good question that you also wanna know the answer to, but then all the "answers" were just jokes bc everyone wanna get upvotes. I dont really mind jokes but those times it was a bit sad, then sometimes no one would answer for real bc i guess they see 10 replies and assume surely one of them is real already.
Also repost bots.
And apple vs samsung feuds.
And sometimes looked like whenever some people try to organize action or protests, comments just spamming that "protests do nothing" or "voting does nothing," or "what is this gonna do," not suggesting any other solution either, almost like trying to encourage apathy? Or discourage action. Sometimes i wondered if those were bots.
Also the r/wooosh when someone didn't understand a joke. .-.
/r/MadeMeSmile portrayed toxic positivity which felt out of touch with reality.
"I made my bed today. First time in 14 years 🙂"
Honestly, with ADHD, that can be pretty normal. One day you forget to make your bed and suddenly boom, it's been 14 years since the last time you did it. Good habits die so easily because they give no pleasant hormones and bad habits come so easily because they give you reward hormones.
I honestly make my bed a couple of times a year. Also there's a theory that not making your bed is actually healthier because it doesn't create a warm, moist environment under the blanket for shit to grow in, so I use that as an excuse. But really, I just forget it all the time and don't care too much.
Yes I absolutely hated that sub, either like your example or some awful news with a very slightly hopeful element.
"puppy whose legs were destroyed by a landmine learns to love again"
/r/upliftingnews was even worse at this.
"This 8-yr-old sold his Pokemon cards to buy his mom a prosthetic leg after she lost hers to cancer. What an angel!"
(Eight year old provides free healthcare in a first world nation that doesn't have universal healthcare for some reason.)
Can we stop talking about Reddit? Let it go.
Hey people grieve at different speeds. Some people got to acceptance on the same day, others are still in denial.
This! We all mourn at our own pace. Some people may still be at the anger stage.
...there is nothing to grieve..it is a website...
This
(I'm so sorry. I couldn't resist)
You maybe should have tried harder to resist.
Yes, Lettit!
"Thanks for the gold kind stranger"
You forgot to add the "Edit: " part because they always have to come back and edit every 2 minutes.
Edit: "Whoa my first gold! Thanks!"
Edit2: "Wow this is silly, thanks everyone!"
Edit3: "While you're here, let me tell you my life story."
EditAdNauseum: High pitched ear ringing
Uhhhg. Reddit award acceptance speeches like anyone cares.
"Oh wow thank you for giving a giant corporation your money because of something I said!"
Please don't let /c/asklemmy become like /r/askreddit, which had half of the front-page posts being the same sex related questions every month.
"Women of reddit, what non sexual thing that guys so makes you horny?"
"What is the sexiest thing you regret doing?"
"How many cocks have you sucked while your cat judges you while waiting for you to feed it?"
It was bullshit.
I don't know why the mods of r/AskReddit still accepts these kind of posts when it would be more appropriate to do an NSFW r/AskReddit (if it doesn't already exist).
Moderators who coddle bigots.
Bigots.
This is my #1 also. So many people "just asking questions"
I also hate the circlejerk of people going "I cannot possibly comprehend being gay/trans/disabled/whatever but I let them do what they want!" They're not aliens, you can listen to them explain what they are going through and have empathy. It's not very complicated.
I think it’s a good attitude to serve as a stepping stone away from bigotry, it appeals to the bigots by offering some common ground while giving them a path to becoming less outwardly bigoted. Social progress takes time, especially with attitudes engrained as much as homophobia used to be.
Oh don't get me started on the sealioning from the bigots! "But we need to have more Valuable Discussion™ about my horseshit that's been debunked a million times already!"
r/moderatepolitics was the worst for that.
Their moderation policy basically allowed any abhorrent view as long as it was expressed in a "civil" manner.
Trolls and racists could say things like "well, in my humble opinion, black people are just inherently violent and unintelligent" and anyone who got irate and called them out would get a warning and/or banned.
In my experience, the more obsessed a sub's mods were about civil language, the more "be civil" meant "don't sass the nazis."
There is a decent argument historically that communism and other left movements are extremist, racist, and anti-lgbtq. When you start banning concepts, you open your communities up to several things.
I said "bigots" and you immediately jumped to "whatabout communists?!"
Karma-removed. It's already started with the stupid "upote my can of beans" posts... Dude nobody cares about your internet points, either activity participate or fuck off to Instagram.
Have my upvote! (Sorry Had to)
This. It's why I hope we don't have any sort of Karma system on Lemmy.
Up/Down vote systems also suck, and are inherently problematic, and encourage unhealthy behaviors. I say get rid of them.
There's just no need for it. I like the ability to upvote/downvote posts for visibility, but a karma or point system just encourages removed, which leads to a dirth of lazy and low quality content
The “hivemind” ignoring the correct information or even worse, encouraging the wrong information.
Does anyone else remember the whole Boston Bomber fiasco (i.e. We did it, Reddit)?
Similarly asking for proof getting downvoted to hell. Asking for proof is so important online and pretty much every statement should be able to provide proof
A lot of people would just upvote the first bozo to reply with a confident answer and never bother to check for the full story. Scrolling 3 comments down you’d find someone who actually knows their stuff. I learned to at least read most of the comments before committing any Reddit info to memory as fact.
It's most noticeable when the topic being discussed is your area of expertise. Then you clearly see what kind of grossly oversimplified or even blatantly false comments get made with so much confidence and upvoted.
I tried to keep this in mind while reading stuff that I'm not an expert in, but that's hard.
Then you come out facts swinging, and despite possessing vastly more knowledge on the subject and presenting factual/cited corrections to their claims, you are the one downvoted because the userbase has already decided the false claim is more fun to believe.
Let them continue to devolve in their cesspool. They can have it.. They deserve it...
Ads.
Fuck ads.
Cringe horny sexual questions on the main page every day: Reddit, what sound do you like to hear when you do the sex with your female partner? (and the post has 999999 upvotes and 99999 comments)
TIFU by sexing the sex when I sexed my sexy sexer.
People constantly asking the same questions, resulting in the same answers.
Oh wow, people wish Firefly wasn’t cancelled? This is certainly new information.
/u/spez
My cat didn't get any love over on insert community name here. I hope you guys updoot me more than they did.
updoot
WORST.
u/spez
The general attitude that people have where they need to be right at all costs and will insult you for thinking otherwise.
Like, it's okay to admit that you're wrong and have your views changed.
👍
"Sir, you have just won the internet" "Thanks for the gold kind stranger" "I too choose this guy's [placeholder]" And the other corny overused reddit lines
The ragebait fake text message screenshots that plague subs like antiwork.
Wow, your dickhead boss is stupid enough to put all of that in writing and has the exact same style of writing, spelling and grammar as you do? Isn’t that a coincidence!
/r/nothingeverhappens
This is posted in sarcasm as I always hated that kind of response
People who don’t know/acknowledge the difference between “free speech” and “hate speech”
unfortunately lemmy already has those people, but luckily enough they seem to organize in tidy communities that are easy to defederate
"On mobile, apologies for bad formatting."
As if posting from a mobile device somehow prevents you from using paragraphs and punctuation? Give me a break. You either can't be bothered, which means you're not worth interacting with; or you had to repeat at least a high school English class or two growing up. Either way you need to stop blaming your fucking phone.
There's not a good reason for anyone to blame their phone anymore, but mobile formatting used to be a real issue. Different apps required different amounts of blank lines to actually make a separate paragraph, so people often got giant blocks of text instead on accident, or paragraphs with two lines in between them.
Sponsored posts, banner ads, algorithms, and other advertising-industry fuckery.
A reply that's just "r/(some subreddit name)."
A robot trying to sell stolen fan art printed onto t-shirts.
People childishly self-censoring non-sweary words. "Sex" isn't a bad word, but writing "s*x" suggests you probably shouldn't be allowed on social media at your stage of development.

Perma bans
perma bans him (joking of course ;D )
If only Reddit would do the same thing that FB does. I would gladly take a month ban from time to time to stay on Reddit. But, they got me and like lots of other people, I didn’t say anything bad. Oh well, hopefully Reddit will go down in flames in 10 years or so.
DAE
Banana for scale
5/7 with rice
Generic ask Reddit threads
All that shit can go to hell.
Banana for scale pre-existed reddit, and is unlikely to die soon lol
But yeah, fuck the rest of that list, I'm with you :)
I feel like the lack of karma system will 100% help in this aspect. No reason to comment/post dumb things since you don't really get anything with your post/comment is at the top.
“Am I the only one that likes this game?” (Image is a cartridge for Ocarina of Time)
DAE?
daaaeeeyyy
Ragebait like noahgettheboat, idiotsincars, publicfreakout. It’s the Jerry Springer of the 2020’s.
Safe spaces for fascism. Spez let The_Donald and its imitators fester for years, thus turning Reddit into a de facto Nazi Bar. Thus years of harassing non-fascists & minorities, brigading, spouting bigotry, disinformation and toxicity while the admins yawned.
Unfortunately fascist spaces will exist and cannot be prevented because of the core nature of Lemmy/fediverse architecture. Anyone can start their own instance and post whatever they want.
However, if the main popular instances defederate with them, then most users won't have to see those posts.
Yep. Defederation's the best weapon here. Keep the fascists ostracized!
AFAIK the following have been defederated or blocked otherwise: -theDonald -exploding heads -meta (on going)
Umm, you're aware that anyone can stand up a Lemmy instance? Communists and fascists alike, you can just defederate from any instance you don't like.
Shitty repost bots. Actively ban bots pretending to be humans.
Karma. I feel like that will push Lemmy in a way that isn't healthy.
Thanks for the gold kind stranger
The smug, smarmy attitude Redditors are known for even when they're obviously wrong.
Just general karma removed...
spez
I’m feeling insecure and shy, please rate my anus.
I hope that the mod-user relationship will be healthier here. (Bias, I was a reddit moderator.)
Some reddit mods were crap, this is true. Powermods and sub collectors were real. They did shit up a few communities.
But these people were a very small proportion of all moderators. Most moderators I met were chill, and just wanted to chip in to their respective communities to give back, in a way. Volunteering for internet janitor duty, because no matter how much people use the term as an insult it turns out public spaces need janitors - or they get filled with shit, trash, graffiti (and not the cool kind either, mostly badly drawn swastikas). It's not a position that should be glorified, or anything, because that's weird, but I hope that some semblance of basic respect can be maintained here on Lemmy - both ways, meaning no powermods but also no defaulting to assuming mods suck.
I say this with the best of intentions so bear with me, but I think most of the disdain towards moderators on Reddit came from locking threads due to "excessive trolling" or "y'all can't behave" etc. It was so visible and immediately shut down conversation which was frustrating for average users. In my opinion excessive trolling isn't a reason to shut a thread. The only things that would really need to be shut down would be things that are straight up illegal. Obviously people saying offensive things or trolling is an issue but, again in my opinion, that's what the whole upvote downvote system is for, and moderators can step in for things that are blatantly out of line.
“Women of Reddit: what’s the sexiest sex you ever sexed (and why)?”
“This.”
Corporate shills.
u/spez
Overzealous mods.
Endless OF spam.
Corporate shills.
Permanent bans. Except for egregious cases, ALL bans should be for a certain number of hours to cool the situation down, and then let it go.
Rampant onlyfans promo on as many communities as possible.
Why are so many people hating on the only fans girls? It's free nudes you get for zero effort. These thots filled every niece subreddit with content. Why not let them get some advertisement from it. That's a win win in my book
Yes and no to an extent. I support them being able to advertise for their stuff somewhere, but subs need to take a stance on what they allow. So much you see on reddit is the same photo x-posted to 50 subs and often not "fitting" into the sub, it just becomes spammy.
Stuff like gonewild becomes wildly different if it becomes just a promotion-sub. Can't there just be that instead?
Links to Twitter. Never had an acct, the site is horrid, and I will not go.
Realistically, everything we dislike on reddit is pretty much unavoidable once there is a certain number of people, outside of being ran by some capitalist shills, hopefully
Links pointing to Reddit content
Other Redditors. Can we just be on Lemmy and move the fuck on?
u/spez
Communities with videos of violence and assault, justice porn etc. I hate those, this is honey for conservatives and fascists, they love it and it disgusts me.
"Came here to say this"
Also, while I will tolerate it, I hope we tone down the doggo speak
Too much politics. During the election on Reddit, everything was either ecstatic “Trump good!” or smug “Orange man bad!” posts with no actual content. My list of blocked subreddits ballooned, and that helped. Maybe I’ll have to do that here.
I second that. It's overwhelming.
I hope you're wrong cause of the reasons why I left reddit and ended up at Lemmy was for the politics. YouTube is too right-wing biased and Imgur has too many memes. Give me those juicy Trump stories. Can't wait for the day when I see the "Trump Sentenced to 20 Years" post pop up on the front page here.
While he's eating McDonald's and watching TV in his "cell"?
