the man who hit the family and never stopped, reportedly admitted drinking "a little" alcohol earlier in the day. He also admitted to being on painkillers and being partially blind in one eye
It's a miracle only one person died

Fuck that police department. That is 1000% the fault of a car centric society.
- The prosecutor who filed the charges and the judge who gave the charges the time of day are equally if not more evil than the police here.

Here in Sweden, me and my sister walked alone to school every day since we started at seven years old, I remember the day before the first day at school, mom walked us to and from school to show us the way we should walk to be safe, this included crossing a commuter railroad and several intersections. When we were in year four, the school allowed students to bike to school.
Quite the difference in thinking about cars and safety....
- That happens here too. I walked from 3rd grade until graduating High School. Rain or shine.
  I remember getting a spiffy red bike in middle school because the new school was miles away. It was sweet. Except I kept forgetting/losing the combination to my lock. I felt a little grown up when I got a lock with a key. Ha!
  As for the article, that's horrible. Part of driving is being alert and responsible for the unexpected. Arresting the parents is straight up fucked.

I wonder if the outcome would have been the same if it was a black driver and a white kid.

I'm curious what the speed limit of the road was. It blows my mind how fast we let cars drive in residential areas. The fact that these kids can't walk 2 blocks safety between the grocery store and home-- or put another way, that if they don't use the crosswalk between home and the grocery store, there's a serious risk of death-- is such a failure of city planning and societal values.
Neither article mentions how far it would be had they used the crosswalk, but I'd guess, with a 4 lane road, for two kids it was really out of the way.
How heartbreaking. 7 years old. As a parent you can't say, "yeah, you can walk two blocks home,"? Land of the free, but no autonomy for people without a car.
