It's really weird to see a subreddit devoted to piracy full of people who really, really don't like the idea of sticking it to this company.
- Don't expect all pirates to be 'against the man', some are just lazy gits who don't wanna spend money (not that there's anything wrong with that) and don't give much of a damn otherwise about 'the other shit'.
  I'm 100% on board with the protest, and I'm 100% on board with /r/piracy just dying if for no other reason than just because Reddit is the worst fucking place to deal with piracy, especially with the times they threatened to nuke the sub in the past, double-especially with that time the mods had to wipe out pretty much the entire history of the subreddit in order to prevent it from being shut down.
  
  In short, the ones left in r/piracy in reddit now are the leechers and freeloaders.
  
  the thing is that db0 (the previous top mod) should have made it clear that each post contained a bot autobot that told us to go to lemmy the main forum and that r/piracy is temporary.. This would probably make that subreddit close as soon as possible, which would be our first choice in the first place.
  But neither db0, nor other mods are ready to leave that subreddit, they want r/piracy to continue. So that's why they are not linking to this site.
  And I don't care honestly, I will as many of you also will do probably, will focus on my own needs, and if r/piracy isn't according to my needs I will leave. I mainly use it to get news about the piracy world to be honest.

I can't read comments over there anymore, they've become some of the biggest bootlickers on the site. Moving to Lemmy was a very effective way to filter out all the dipshits.
- Fucking same. I hope someone recognizes their scab usernames and kicks them out of private pirate communities because such people are legit a massive opsec hole. But who am i kidding there noobs are probably just leeching off pirate bay only

  It’s nuts, the drop in quality since even two weeks ago(let alone 2 years ago) is actually insane. I always thought 90-9-1 was a bit of copium by users wanting to feel more important than they were, but even the relatively small protests/migration has torpedoed the atmosphere generally.

I am really disappointed in the current Reddit r/Piracy community. Reddit is horrendous, but seems like that community is extremely ignorant about the actual condition. They don't deserve any of the good things.

  Nowadays they're asking the very same question (which is “why the fuck are those morons still protesting against Reddit? They've done nothing wrong!”) - without searching - every while and then. And it actually violates the latest rule of “only sexy pirate John Oliver artwork may be posted”. ;)

r/piracy is probably on borrowed time. Might as well return it to normal and wait for it to inevitably be banned. By then, Lemmy should hopefully be more polished.

To be very blunt, it's best to leave Reddit. Within a year or two, discussing piracy itself would be banned there.

At this point I no longer care. I yet haven’t uninstalled Apollo and Boost out of respect for the developers but haven’t used them in 3 weeks. Come the 30th I will uninstall them and that is it. I will continue tu use Reddit as a search clutch while it works but will only get my fix of news either here or via rss feed as I used to do prior to Reddit.

The protesting should go on, but it's 1.7k against 3.1k who want to open fully if I remember corrently.I bit the bullet and went into the poll comments as well. Clown comment section ~ 95%. I am sad and disgusted. I'm happy they are over there and not here. Ironically it convinced me to never step foot back in there.
- That's the thing, all the people who are against the changes left Reddit so logically there's progressively less pro protest users and the ones left don't care about it and want to get back to normal.

  Exactly. I was active in the sub for a few days after the move, inviting them to Lemmy, but found it exhausting. Though it did help those confused it seems.
  I'm happy here; things will only get better when Sync for Lemmy and Memmy fully release.

I would say let the people who want to stay on reddit have it. This protest was the best thing that could have happened to /r/piracy, because now there is this place with 17k subscribers. I know there was another backup before this, but I don't think it was this popular. And if reddit will go public there is a good chance that that subreddit will be banned or quarantined and at that point it would have been hard to spread information about something like this place.

Disappointing that 2/3 of the remaining users seem to vote for reopening.
- The people that are most in favor of closing have left for alternatives (like Lemmy)

I'm very curious how reddit will handle it; they would probably hesitate openly supporting a piracy sub by putting in new mods

I think we have to keep up the protest. Personally, I find Lemmy much better than Reddit. All that's missing is for users to follow the movement, but that's not going to happen.

Well, the sub had gone downhill recently anyway - endless memes or posts about 'what is seeding' 'what is a vpn' 'what is plex' or just idiots who got an ISP notice and think it means they are going to jail.
- Come to think about it, third party apps was the reason the sub was tolerable for me because I could filter out posts flagged as humor.

I think people on r/piracy need to see the writing on the wall. Reddit is getting rid of 3rd party clients, is obviously not happy with large subs swapping to NSFW content and is trying to push for things to be as advertiser friendly as possible
At some point they're going to go after piracy subs more aggressively which is probably why it's better to make the switch earlier rather than later
I see a lot of comments there saying when that happens "they'll just make a new sub" missing the fact once Reddit starts banning piracy users/subs the new ones that spring up in its place will only last a week or two before being banned again

Personally I just don't like lemmy, but i'll stick to where the community goes. This instances are slow and don't always work well. Simple things like upvotes lag. Either way its splintering the community and that is a bad thing in the long run.
The sub is already open though and people are posting piracy related questions. I don't see why people are still removed.
people are addicted to reddit and its going to take time for them to get off that drug. Having a robust, functional alternative would help with that. Lemmy needs work still to be that
- Lemmy needs to have people willing to put up with the rough edges and build functioning communities before it will become a desirable alternative to one of the largest websites on the modern internet. Rome was not built in a day, friend.
- I'd say after spending a few days getting to understand the place, finding suitable subreddit replacements and getting the buggy subscription process to work, it's now about 75% of the way there for me. The next 25% is gonna mainly be just bug fixes and incremental feature enhancements. Check out https://sub.rehab/ and https://browse.feddit.de/ for an easier way to locate communities rather than using the built in search, which is not very functional yet.
- Wait for Sync for Lemmy and Memmy (Apollo inspired) to come out in a few weeks and this'll already be a better experience than reddit on mobile

  have tried kbin... everything he said about instances being slow and buggy applies doubly at kbin (dot social). some of the busier lemmy instances like this one have it a little but I was get server 503 / unavailable errors very frequently with kbin.
  I hope both fix the issues and we can all enjoy better stability on better infra all around the fediverse.. but until then IMO lemmy is slightly more stable.

The idea of the protest is to either forcibly reduce user interaction/retention on the site or raise awareness of the problems that the API changes will raise, spamming John Oliver in pirate clothing won't effectively achieve either.
I like the idea of r/theyknew which forces every post to have an image saying that reddit is killing 3rd party apps. But even that would be better in bigger subreddits which constantly gets r/all coverage.
The way r/piracy is "protesting", it's better to open away, it's not like Reddit wants copyright circumvention to be discussed in their website.

We have a limited ability to freely discuss piracy on mainstream social media, which Reddit now regrettably is. IMO piracy communities can probably only exist in decentralized social media anymore.

They should stop protesting and let the place rot, they're already on lemmy and officially moved there now. Best thing they could do is to lock the subreddit, point to lemmy, and keep it like that till admins feels like force-reopening an (illegal!) subreddit and appoint supermods that won't do anything with it. r/piracy is dead, long live c/piracy official lemmy community.

/r/Piracy seems to be the only subreddit I've seen that is upset with the mods for the protest. Every other sub I've been in, anyone who says anything remotely negative about the protests is downvoted to oblivion (rightfully so in my opinion)

My take, I think a piracy subreddit protesting is useless since were already on thin ice. Some people just want advice on any issues they are having and not many of them know about lemmy. If anyone will convince Reddit to change their API policy, it aint us. Let the normies get their questions answered and the news flowing.

- Maintaining the protest has been losing for a while at around 1:2 ratio. Only ~3000 votes in total right now however.

  I can't help but feel that the issue had been presented a bit wrong to the followers of most subs.
  It became "the mods are ruining the sub", when it should have been "the mods are moving to another website, here's the address, here are some mobile apps, you can come or you can stay, we'll see which one pans out".
  Unfortunately and ironically Lemmy is not all that advanced with moderation tools or mobile apps either, although it's moving at a tremendous pace.
  Also unfortunately most Reddit mods are still in the denial/bargaining stages right now.
