My old girl, put down last May 22 at 14.

She was mostly deaf and blind her last few years, but she managed perfectly fine on her own unless we moved stuff around. She could still see shapes, and when I turned to look at her she would still wag her tail, so not fully blind.

Condolences friend. Lost my boy 3 or 4 years ago. Doubt I'll ever get over it. Name was Rufus. My sister named him after Rufus Shinra from FF7. A Jack Russell. He ended up my dad's dog. Then mine after dad passed from COPD/Lung cancer. He was mine for years after. My constant companion.
- You never do, the hurt just gets less every year. I enjoy the FF universe, but that’s also a very good name for a Jack Russel. How old was he? They can typically live longer lives than most pure breeds iirc.
  I can’t remember how we came up with her name, but it was Piper, we always called her boo-boo though. She was a rescue from the humane society, a German Shepard, Beagle, and we think heeler mix. She was 40# and loyal as hell.
  
  Funny story there. Got him i wanna say 2006. Dad and sis went to the grocery store and they met some people giving away puppies. Rufus was the last one and the runt. He had been bullied by the rest of the litter to the point he had a bloody sore on his neck. And the little girl walked up to my sister and said "Here" and stuck him in her arms. Then they loaded up and left. Didn't even ask if they wanted the dog. They had apparently been there a while giving them away and just wanted to be done with it.
  He lived until 2021. So he lived to be 15.

Sorry for your loss. I also made a post about mine that passed on the same day. I can only imagine we had very similar days these last few... I don't think I've felt this type of pain before. It's so quiet in the house, and that's been the worst part.
- We knew it was coming, we were counting our blessed extra days, so made it a little easier. My condolences for your loss as well, maybe another pupper in the future for you?
  We knew we would get another dog or two, it wasn’t fair to get another with such an old girl. So we’ve had an energetic puppy who turned one back in April. So the house is actually rowdier!
  He’s 3x the size of Piper, little larger than anticipated haha. Name is Titan.
  He isn’t much of a snuggler like my old girl, that’s what I miss the most, the weight on my legs at night, that I don’t think will ever pass.
  
  This was my first dog. My parents never wanted pets when I grew up, my mother was also allergic. The best we could do was birds so we had them. My wife always had a dog growing up, and I wasn't apposed to it. So once we were married and moved to a more permanent residence, we started looking. All rescue places and let me have bigger say in the decision since it was my first. We found her at only 6 months picked up off the streets of TN, and relocated to a shelter by us. She was still a puppy, and we had to do all the training. She was really smart and never gave us any of the problems I expected to find that dogs do.
  I asked my wife if it was just me or if she felt special? She agreed that she was the friendliest and kindest dog she has ever had, so I knew i wasn't crazy. My wife would kill me if we didn't get another dog, but I feel spoiled, and I'm not sure how I could move on at this time. Also due to financial reasons, we are going to wait a bit until we can spoil our next one. Should be about a year until we can make it work which I think is well needed anyway. We had no kids when we got her, so it was easy to spend the time with a puppy, but now I think it would be a bit harder to dedicate that time. The year should let us prepare.
