Look, this is a good thing because some people have audio processing issues.
But also, maybe they could just try not mixing every show and movie with the dialogue so low that it's completely unintelligible??
I know Netflix doesn't have control over this with content that didn't make, but they could at least lead the charge if they're actually recognising this as a problem.
person 1: “Mumble mumble mumble” in a low tone
sfx: super loud explosion/noise
ad break: even louder!!
I agree for the most part but most movies are optimized for the theater where mixed audio levels add to the drama.
Great and all that Netflix is doing this, but this isn't something new in the world. It sounds like their old subtitles were actually Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired (SDH). If you've ever seen that acronym and wondered what it meant, now you do.
Subtitles not labeled SDH have traditionally been dialogue-only.
I have been annoyed about this for years. Even foreign-language movies had audio-descriptive subtitles instead of dialog only, and it really frustrated and distracted me.
Glad to see Netflix finally fix it... now that I already stopped using Netflix and never will use it again.
That's... just called subtitles lol
I'll probably keep using the standard Closed Captioning because I don't want to miss out on great musical captioning like, "Ancient Lamentation Music", but great to see the different options exist.
same but because I am here for the occasional interesting choices made by subtitle creators like [farts knowingly]
Fuck finally sometimes I can't make our shit of what they say. But I don't want an [elevator noises]
No more sad piano noises? How am I supposed to know how to feel about it?
Great idea! Now everyone else copy.
