Don't worry about the dog, kid. Dogs rarely live past their teens. A cat can live into its third decade. You might have to compete with the cat for your college money.

My cat is 15 and still very healthy and zipping around like she's a decade younger. My dog is less than half her age and I've already spent 3k in vet bills on her over the last six months lol.
Yeah, that's just a sad fact of the species. Although, small dogs can last pretty long. My mom has a 12 y/o poodle - lap-size, whatever those are called. He's blind, and has to wear diapers because he can't control his bowels or bladder, but he can still jump up onto her lap for snuggles. Still, I can barely survive losing cats; if I had to lose a dog every decade, I think I'd give up myself.
