President Joe Biden is set to order a ban on new offshore oil and gas development across some 625 million acres of US coastal territory, ruling out the sale of drilling rights in Atlantic and Pacific waters as well as the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Because of how the law allowing this ban was written, it'll take a vote in congress or a win in court to reverse it, not just executive action.
It's not actually subject to a filibuster under Senate rules. Still, there's a decent chance that a handful of Republicans aren't willing to go along with overturning this, which is all it takes to keep the ban in place.
