Velma?
Was that this year?
I thought I heard about a season 2 that was maybe this year. Clearly no one cares enough to check
Of the ones I've seen, True Detective Night Country. I've never seen such a disparity in critics' rating consensus and regular viewer opinions. Not only was it poorly written by True Detective standards, it also wasted Jodie Foster's talents as well. And the worst part is, the showrunner is coming back for the next season because of how "successful" Night Country was.
I genuinely enjoyed Night Country until it became clear they weren't going to answer the questions they raised. I liked the cast well enough, really enjoyed the setting, liked the music (despite the general consensus) and thought the character interplay was fairly good - if sometimes melodramatic.
I went into it confident that the intrigue would be resolved, but it just petered out. It could have been great, but the longer you watch it, the more you feel like they wrote every episode as they went along and painted themselves into a corner.
That ending was sooo bad. How did it suddenly turn into ocean's 11?
House of the Dragon Season 2 and Rings of Power Season 2. I hoped that they would improve from Season 1 but both of them have disappointed and are off my watchlist.
I don't feel the narrative of the second season of House of the Dragon stood up to the first, but the "worst show of the year" seems a little melodramatic?
Agreed. I enjoyed it well enough. Definitely not even in the worst 50% of shows I saw this year. Let's call it average.
I actually think Rings of Power season 2 is an improvement from season 1. Not a lot better, but better.
House of the Dragon season 2 just ended too abruptly. What we got was pretty good, but with some problems. Season 3 should start with a banger.
Those two were definitely disappointing
I really enjoyed House of the Dragon s02. It was one of the best things I saw this year. Not close to the worst.
Landman was like something out of the 80s. Could have been good.
Creature Commandos
Why can't DC ever do anything good? BtAS was the only thing they ever did right, and boy was it ever done right.
Not a show, but Dune 2 was . . .
just bad.
I'm curious about why you thought it was that bad. Can you expound a bit?
I think it was partly because I had just finished reading the books, and the first movie did a spectacular job of honoring those, while the second movie just kinda forgot the book existed. Actually, at times it felt like the movie was trying actively to forget about the book, which defeats the whole purpose and message of Dune. It also, ironically, makes the movie into almost exactly what Frank Herbert was trying to critize, which is the idolatry and corporatization of shallow things (without all the religious stuff, which is a whole different/ same thing). Idk, I guess it felt more Disneyed and a big money grab than a real story. Otherwise, it was a technically good movie.
I like the books and liked the first movie. However something about this one was just off. I think it was the editing. I got bored and turned it off about halfway through.
He is a hit or miss director for me. I loved Arrival but hated Blade Runner.
I'll probably open a similar thread on !movies@lemm.ee tomorrow
