Being a secret agent might seem like a glamorous job, but agencies in the West are struggling to attract the next generation of spies due to many young people prioritising issues such as climate change and COVID-19 over national security.
It's probably because they don't pay enough.
People with the qualifications/experience don't want to work in central London for £35k.
Which means you only get people who really want to join GCHQ etc. for different reasons.
Add to that. Distrust in government by younger citizens. So much recent news about current and past UK wrongs.
I'm surprised any younger recruits exist.
There are always the hardcote bootlickers but yeah gen pop no longer views these regime removed anything respectable.
US is experiencing similar thing too. Within 30 years alphabet boys really ruined their reputation to where main stream just plains doesn't trust them.

The UK also relaxed its recruitment rules in 2022, allowing citizens with foreign-born parents to join security agencies, to increase the labour pool.
You could have foreign-born parents before 2022, it just had to be from an 'approved nation' (no prizes for guessing which nations those were).

Not a problem in Canada of course, since we have the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. We'll just bring in a bunch of temporary foreign spies from less wealthy nations who will probably be happy to do the same job for half the salary.
