edit: in the article it quotes miyazaki as having said they don't want to oppose to it, and the mod only allows online play with other modders so presumably safe

The mod runs without anti-cheat, doesn't use the official servers and has its own savegame. So yes, completely safe.

Both if you want to access the DLC together but you can still play non DLC areas together if only one of you has it.
