The idea could be perfectly cute, and I feel like it would have been so easy to not make it "shame-y".
Like, "just a nibble", "pretty good!”, "yum!" and "my favorite". "I couldn't possibly...", "if you insist", and "thanks Grandma".
I would buy those plates.
I briefly looked into how you make a food safe painted plate at home and the answer seems to be "easy if you have a kiln".
You might be able to find a paint your own pottery store near you. I went to one with some friends and it was a lot of fun and I got a colorful owl coin bank for like, $10 or something. Just have to make sure it's food safe, but they usually coat everything in a glass food safe glaze so it should be.
Unrelated, weed is legal where I live, so when I checked the website for the place I went, it had big banners for "summer kids clay classes!" And "pot-tery for adults!" right next to each other.
It totally makes sense but part of me is still startled by tangential consequences of legalization.
Yeah me too. This has potential!
"Food Coma / Foodie" are in the image, and that's pretty solid. Maybe "3-Star / 5-Star / Greasy Spoon"? I like the one that you came up with that ends with "thanks Grandma."
Note to self: eat food that can stay piled high.
Just drop a can of Pringles on that bad boy
Extra strength mashed potatoes!
Throw some gravy on there and we call that the volcano
The Croquembouche is here for you.
You could probably build a Jenga tower out of those rectangular layered wafers.
This is about as good an idea as nipple tassles for babies.
What an upsettingly evocative image. I love how much I hate it.
Ironically, babies would probably have a grand fun time with nipple tassels.
Shake repeatedly to make em fly in circles
I do not enjoy the mental image it gave me, I hate it and its even worser that the babies are laughing in my mental image
I read this as hats with nipples on them which I think could be a pretty funny protest for places that don't allow breast feeding.
So you're saying this is a very good idea?
Seriously though, who would look at these plates and say "omg I have to have those?"
I think they're funny and could remind me to stick to smaller portions?
I mean I guess but I'm not too keen on the idea of needing a plate to tell me how much to eat.
"cool, I'll give this to my mother-in-law. I'm sure she'll like it"
No z-limit means that these plates are meaningless for the creative cook.
My mom used to always joke about how they recommended your meat portion be the size of your palm, but they didn't say how high.
Calories only exist in 2D
I just eat my food out of a trough.
That was the only way we could stop our cat from making a mess everywhere, so probably works for Hobos too
you guys use plates??
I really like the tradition some countries have where the plate is a flatbread or pancake of some sort.
Won't those get really soggy and fall to pieces in a washing machine?
Now you're making me want to eat injura. I love the spongy sour taste of them. Plus let's face it Ethiopian food is pretty good.
We've been doing that for a long time. We switched to plates around 13 or 1400 something, for unclear reasons.
Only when the eating funnel needs to be scraped clean.
I saw this one on r/EDanonymemes a few days ago
These are not a good way to track how much you eat, get a calorie & nutrition tracking app
Passive vs active engagement.
These plates are a passive, very visual reminder. A tracker app requires you actively use the app, and not consciously/subconsciously underestimate portions.
Neither is a holistic solution, both require buy-in, each is going to have different effectiveness for different people.
While it's true that multiple strategies can be helpful, I don't think the tiny "skinny jeans" circle on that plate is anything but a harmful idea.
Portion sizes are not the same across one meal
Mam jeans?
Right? That was the first thing I thought, that's a cursive 'a,' a cursive 'o' has the "tail" at the top, not the bottom.
Mam is common in northern England.
We'd have a u in favourite.
It's it the dream of every little girl to become a mother? Now you know how!
I feel like there's a toxic body image/patriarchal component to only eating the large portion once you are a mother/soon to be a mother. Something about "letting yourself go" or something terrible like that
True. I've tried to be body positive but I guess I failed
