  • @rman0159@lemmy.world 's old story about DZRH on Reddit was hilarious:

“Stand-By Announcers” do just that—stand by and wait for a technical problem to happen and fill in the gap. If all goes well, all he does is give the opening or closing for pre-recorded programs. But that doesn’t exempt them from disasters. Take for example one who was assigned to stand-by while a pre-taped religious program was being replayed. It was running overtime and it had to be cut while the American pastor was in the midst of preaching emphatically “But Jesus said not a word. Then the devil said…” “This is MBC the Manila Broadcasting Company, DZRH, Manila.” What made it more hilarious was that the announcer’s voice sounded like the pastor’s.

  • For those who want to join our Lemmy Baguio community, we are at !baguio@lemm.ee. I know it's devoid of life now so I might actually need help in getting activity started there. Please delete this comment if this is not allowed 😅.

#blessed

  • I finally was set free from an emotionally abusive relationship. She broke up with me and I finally had the courage to not chase after her.

But she's visibly upset. And I'm afraid of what she'll do to herself. But at the same time, I wanna start looking after myself and start my healing. But I feel guilty for letting her be. While here I am reconnecting with my friends.

    What do I do?

    • better to check with your close friends, maganda rin may update sila about you and how you are feeling

    • I think if there's any circumstance that the three-month rule should apply, it's this.

GIve your time to heal, to process. Pag mejo okay na, then siguro okay nang kausapin siya. But take care of yourself first. Besides, she's the one who broke up with you.

      • New development lang. She's saying she's going to commit suicide before blocking me entirely from all her socials. Goes without saying I'm really panicking. What I did is I contacted her close friend. Sabi naman nila pupuntahan daw nila ngayon pero wala pa ko update. I really feel bad. She was indeed the one who broke up with me but the way she spins the story e ako daw yung nang abandon. And the scary part is I think she also believes that imagined scenario. Sobrang fucked up na din talaga. I'm at a loss kasi what if she went through with it? I won't be able to bear the guilt and baka sumunod nalang din ako bigla.

    • Let go completely, or else the cycle will just repeat itself

  • Nag-update pala si lemmy.world an hour ago. It fixes the infamous login issue daw.

Edit for those who still have issues logging in:

    • When using a browser: clear cookies and cache
    • When using an app: remove your lemmy.world account and add it again.

I'm glad they didn't adopt the grey border that lemm.ee now has, lol.

Edit: Spoke too soon. The grey borders are here! 😒

  • I'm supposed to be sleeping and about to wake up for work in my home city Baguio but I'm currently drinking alone in Cabanatuan because fuck everything

    • Man I don't have the balls to be out of town during a work week.

Also, lakas ulan sa town kanina.

    • This feels like a psyop full of traps and reverse traps. That this is pretty much a googol-IQ level play from MKZ-3000 or its strategist co-processors.

      Consider:

Facebook/Meta already knows that the kind of people who have already migrated to the Fediverse (Mastodon, Lemmy, etc) are the type mistrustful of corporate interests in the internet—anti-FAANG and all that. Facebook meeting-up with people from Mastodon, devs and/or large instance admins (hence, Mastodon.social and Mastodon.world instance owners), would put those people in a frenzy.

Add an NDA to that, which can have the overall effect of an injunction, super-injunction, or even a hyper-injunction—even if that kind of thing isn't legal in whatever jurisdiction the NDA is in (please keep in mind IANAL), and you've got a recipe for people really getting suspicious.

What for? This would shake confidence in Mastodon (and the Fediverse at large) by making it seem that it's already compromised, further scattering people across different solutions.   Even more insidious is that this gives Facebook/Meta an easy way out just by pointing out that it's "too conspiratorial" to think that Mastodon is compromised (because of a meeting).

Is there a way out of this dilemma? I think there is. By giving a Fediverse platform, and their instance admins, just enough trust for them to do their jobs. This is a very hard balance to achieve tho, and personally, I veer too much in either direction: either not trusting people enough, or being too ready to give them the benefit of the doubt.

    • Plot twist: Yung Fediverse pala nakipag-meeting, lol.

  • I stumbled on eurodance and some house music on YouTube, and I re-discovered this again. Lol

Fun fact: This was not produced by Filipinos, and they were infamous with the songs "Lick It" and "Short Dick Man."

  • It's unfortunate that lemmy.world continues to experience various issues in the past week. But the up side of it is that all the other instances could benefit from the fixes.

On a related note, I've been using Sync and old.reddit for so long now that I didn't realize how different new.reddit is from before they started implementing the new UI. It's using the same topics paradigm (ala hashtags) that makes the official app a mess to use. I've only used it for some mod actions that were not available at old.reddit.

    • This is off-topic but... I hope you don't mind.

I could be the only one thinking this way, but IMO, places bearing names of real people should be reverted to whatever it is they were before the renaming. Hence, I'd love to see Quezon province revert to Tayabas (province), Rizal (province) revert to Morong, or Quezon City be… no, wait that's an entire aisle of cans of worms.¹

And really, even if we look at places in other countries that are named after people, such as Washington state (US), it doesn't really give me much. Sure, it's in honor of some guy named Washington, but do I really want a Philippine province named "Aguinaldo"? Hell no!

It's already bad enough that our country is named after some prince. (I'd argue, however, that that ship has already sailed, and that we already have enough stake on the name Philippines that renaming our country is no longer necessary, the time for that should have been more than a hundred years ago, and at most, seventy-odd years ago.)

      • ¹ Quezon City is a Frankenstein's monster created from bits and pieces absorbed from its surrounding localities, and that's an oversimplification of the history and politics of its birth.
  • good read about bots spamming lemmy - https://sh.itjust.works/post/998409

    • So the numbers were inflated, and pretend that it's hype?

      • yep, sa para na rin di mag-cause ng issue yun mga suspicious accounts

    • From one of the comments in the linked thread:

Obviously we can make inferences based on active users and speed of growth, but a smart person could minimize those signs to the point of being unnoticeable.

Off the top of my head, correlating the growth of new accounts to active users (plus some lag) could be a useful heuristic here. Preemptively de-federating from suspicious instances (based on the heuristic I've just given, or some other, more refined heuristic) can also be useful until there are better tools that are available against this.

I've noticed from looking at pretty graphs that there's usually a correlation between new registrations and user activity across the board. However, since bot accounts don't necessarily generate activity (and for a good reason—a lot of those bots are either made by well-meaning people demonstrating the danger, or are put as sleeper agents until they are needed), one can reasonably guess that an instance with an abnormally high rate of new user registrations, without the corresponding rise in user activity, is a bot-infested instance.

Of course, this could lead to bots artificially rising activity through spamming, and this needs action as well.

All this I've said have already been discussed in the comment thread where I've lifted the quote from. Of particular note to me is this:

A simple way to do so is to just start with a handful of popular, well run instances and consider them trustworthy. Then they can vouch for any other instances being trustworthy and if people agree, the instance is considered trustworthy. It would eventually build up a network of trusted instances. It’s still decentralized. Sure, it’s not as open as before, but what good is being open if bots and trolls can ruin things for good as soon as someone wants to badly enough?

I think the opposite approach, like how it is done in ad-blockers, would work: a list of instances that are considered bot-infested and are untrustworthy. Basically, a block list. Publicly-available lists would be made available, and instances can be might be more strict—and hence liberal in adding more instances to this list (Beehaw.org is one example I immediately think of that would do things this way), or less strict.

Having said all that, I have this suspicion that it's already how things work currently, just a bit more ad-hoc and "manual". Also, this is probably way too over my head.

Anyways, for whatever it's worth, that's my two cents.
