I started using Plasma 5 a smidge before devs were saying it was ready for primetime. That was my conversion from Gnome (which I was very happy to leave by then) and it's been nothing but positive.
I will wait for the full release of Plasma 6, but I'm super excited for it. I still lt;3 Plasma 5.
Thank you KDE devs!
What Plasma 6 feature are you most excited for?
Not OP but I'm looking forward to a really insignificant bug fix. When I open a context menu on my second monitor that uses a different scaling it flickers and the background drops out. It's just visual and I almost never use that context menu but knowing it's there bothers me. Per the bug report I filed it was planned to be resolved with the other Wayland fixes in v6.
Nothing specific. When I first jumped from gnome I spent probably more than a year going "damn that was thoughtful" or "wow, that's super convenient" as I discovered different features. As I said, I was an earlyish adopter of Plasma 5, and it was enjoyable just to watch it take shape.
I like what the KDE team does, and I like seeing Plasma continue to get better, so I'm just looking forward to a fresh new release, and discovering all the little niceties.
And bringing back the compiz style cube is pretty nice too. 😁

Maybe windows rules will now work properly instead of being buggy and delete themselves...fingers crossed Imho KDE is too big, there are so many cogwheels they miss the opportunity to actually polish each and every aspect.
e.g. why does KDE need a specific videoplayer?
KDE and GNOME want to be full suites of software that offer a coherent look and whatnot.

This release KDE has actually focused on improving and fixing more than just adding features
MPV and VLC Flatpak both use Xwayland btw.
Clapper uses Wayland though.
never heard of clapper. Nothing is going to replace mpv for me.
Maybe this time I can get blur behind semi transparent windows to work 🤔
Interesting, I've never had window rules delete themselves, am I just lucky?
how many rules are you using?
I agree as well, but don't get the video player part. It shouldn't need a specific one.
Does it NEED a specific player or just come with a default?
I don't understand the question?
Will this affect SteamOS in any way? I guess the development on that is separate from KDE but I don't really know.
Eventually valve will probably push a SteamOS update out with plasma 6. But it'll be up to then when to do it.
Makes sense, that's what I assumed
To a "newbie", what does this mean? I transitioned to Linux full time less than a year ago and settled with KDE. Will this affect me in any way?
Just a bigger update, should be fine. AFAIK they did not do any major overhaul from a regular user's perspective, but there are some pretty big changes under the hood. If you use a distro with regular releases, this will probably be included in the next one.
Yeah that's what I thought, thanks for the answer!
There where some changes though, different Dolphin icons, different and way better Panel changing, and more
If you are on Opensuse Leap, Debian or probably also Kubuntu (Ubuntu LTS), no it wont affect you.
Stable = unchanging bugs, not working packages.
On Kubuntu you may get it with "Kubuntu backports" but really just no.
If you are on Fedora KDE then you will have Plasma 6 in a few months! The same probably for Opensuse Tumbleweed, Arch, etc.
Running surprisingly well for a beta. I really hope to find some free time and help some more with reporting the minor bugs left during the end of the year vacation time and help polish for the final release.
