Always refer to the pic below when comes to stairs. Also make sure to use DFHack, it helps with some of the jank including stairs.

@bionicjoey nope! I’ll take a look, brand new to the game so I didn’t realize there was one as it hadn’t popped up during searches. Thanks!!

What specifically is the trouble?

A general breakdown is:

to clear a room you mine this leaves a floor and ceiling.

For stairs up/down stairs allow you to go up or down from the layer they are on. This requires stairs on the layer you are moving to as well. Down stairs go only down up stairs go only up.

To remove the floor from a layer you would use channel, this leaves a ramp on the lower layer that allows movement up and down. These can be removed.

@lightnsfw thank you!! So far I’m at the tutorial stage and couldn’t get the stairs placed or any digging done form the mining menu. I tried several new games to see if that was the problem but I think it user error.

  If you can give a better explanation of the steps you are taking that isn't working I'd be happy to help further.

The basics: Ensure you have a dwarf with a pickax with mining labor enabled, with access to area you designate for mining.

@ZombiFrancis maybe explain to me like I’m five how I would ensure those settings are on. Asking for a friend 🤓
