Can we keep this community global?

It's almost exclusively about USA right now and frankly I'm sick of this US-centrism.

I'd love to see more content from outside the US. If you want to help out, you can post content about other places.

While I totally agree that climate is a worldwide topic, not sure what you think the options are here…
If the majority of users submit and upvote US based stories, that’s what will appear in the community.
If the majority upvote more global stories, that’s what’ll appear.
The only other option I can think of would be adding a rule prohibiting US stories, but that feels like it’s going too far the other direction, no?
- I'm not sure what the exact solutions are, I just know there is a problem of cultural dominance. Perhaps a slightly increased standard for international relevance wouldn't be entirely unreasonable? There are sometimes intranational political developments of interest to the rest of the world, but if we're just letting popular vote decide what subscribers see without moderation, then based on initial observation, non-USians will just have to move to more regionally specific communities/instances or consent to cultural assimilation.

i understand the sentiment of these posts and i agree with that sentiment, but i also dont understand them. the reason usa-centered stuff is posted is because americans post them. people from outside the usa need to post about their countries too, if they want it to be less usa focused, the posts won't just spawn out of nowhere. saying this won't make them spawn out of nowhere, it wont thanos snap the americans on the fediverse out of existence. be the change you want to see.

Most new post here have been posted by @silence7, who is clearly an American. One user, means the post will be one sided. Thats not @silence7 fault obviously.

Be the change you want to see. Things don't just magically appear on the forum, people just like you have to post them. And if you can't be arsed to do that, then be thankful for what others are willing to provide to you for free.
- If I submit a dozen links per day pertaining to various details about a single game to a general gaming sub, you don't think people would find that kind of annoying? Or what if a TV sub was constantly flooded by a large minority talking about some particular show they're all watching. Maybe USians could have their own climate news sub.
  
  I can’t stop people from feeling annoyed, no. But if you’re the only one submitting, then, no, those people would have no right to complain. You’d be the person keeping the lemmy alive. I would tell those people to post the areas they feel strongly about as well. Now if there’s a good mix of topics being submitted, then sure, talk to the mods about setting up some guidelines about USA-posting. But right now I look at this lemmy and see 1-2 people donating a lot of their time, and some armchair quarterbacks being choosing beggars about the effort they’re getting for free.
  
  Generally speaking, you want to organically fragment communities when there's enough activity that you can't keep up with the parts you care about because the feed is noisy from other content. At this point, slrpnk.net is not to that point at all. I don't think anyone here would be bothered by people posting more global stuff. As of now, if we split off slrpnk.net communities into US and Global versions of the community, I'd expect the result to be all the same activity in the US communities and the Global communities being completely dead.
  TL;DR: We can't post more non US stuff for you. If you have some stuff you'd like to share, we'd be thrilled to look at it

!environment@aussie.zone is mostly Australian-centric.
This doesn't detract from your post though. As a non-American internet user, we are all too aware what it's like being a minority on the internet.

  Well here "El nino" is being a prick and doing a lot of damages. We already had one torrential rain and there is another one to come today or tomorrow(if the forecast is correct)

I think part of the problem is language. Sure I could post local climate news, but it’s not in English, so what’s the point?
- Translating tools are good enough these days to be able to convey the gist of an article. On reddit it was in some places common to post articles in a foreign language, with the title of the post being the title of the article translated to english, and a summary in the post/comments. But even without the summary, I think it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for someone who's interested in the article to just put it through deepl or google translate or something.

With all due respect, there's nothing stopping you from posting content from a non-US perspective.

Well if you want to keep a community global you have to find people from around the globe to contribute to it. And maybe don't try to dictate to a community what they should of should not be doing
(Non American by the way, not that it should matter)

Never understand these takes... Lemmy is a spin off of an incredibly us-dominant userbase so it follows that most of the users are American, who are going to post American things. If you want to see less us things, post more non us things, or make a community about your region. Makes no sense to punish the majority for the minority.
