Hey guys, I just made an account here after hearing that making an account on the lemmy instance nearer your location would improve loading times. It is true loading speeds are great but I am seeing only few of the communities from other instances. For example I can't find the !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world over here on monyet.cc
Why is that so?
when searching for communities, watch out for the couldnt_find_object error, that can mean you've got the url syntax wrong, usually (also the error doesn't appear every time, and I've only seen it in the browser not apps, but when it does you should double check the url)
The federation is quite wonky so you ought to try typing the whole url in the search bar, and try it a few times. First time i do this i tried searching for woodworking on lemmy world, have to try refreshing a few times before it connect.
Iirc someone mentioned that they have to copy the other instance into this server so you could visit it, maybe that's the reason it couldn't connect because it hasn't done copying yet. But once you done so, other people will have easier time visiting that community.
Q to the techies: would link clickthroughs from instances and just fedi in general be recognizable to the web admin of the news sites (for example)? Just thinking how soon before news and public sites notice (esp with twt being on fire, reddit being on its way too, and fb/ig being unnavigable) fedi visits and actually start reorienting themselves.
(It's so embarassing - I can find Indonesian media, Singaporean media and journalists, Filipino tak payah cakaplah - even their institutions and unis are coming onboard, even Thai news and public sector content in English! But Malaysia........ KWSP or khazanah got stock in twitter or what?)
you're probably thinking of the "referer" http header.
it's certainly possible that the admins of news sites could be tracking that, but monyet.cc sets a "referer-policy" of "same-origin", which as far as I know prevents that from leaking to other sites.
kbin.social, on the other hand, doesn't seem set this policy (but I just looked at the front page, and didn't investigate further).
Ooo interesting! this is where you can see I'm so outdated - is this the same stuff that used to inform blog pingbacks? Or just about anything in a google site kit dashboard that tracks source of the referral?
For sure, the quality seems to have gone down over the blackout. Noticed quite a few regulars stopped commenting too and many new accounts filling the space ig?
Been using wefwef, it’s pretty slick. Very similar to Apollo. Just that lemmy.world, kbin.social and monyet.cc are still quite slow and underpopulated right now so not a lot of content.
Yup I know, still young rn, but hard to resist the urge to check Reddit haha. I keep opening my Apollo app out of habit. Will post eventually, but I’m usually more of a lurker hehe
