They’re trying to differentiate themselves by running to Trump’s right in an attempt to win any voters away, while at the same time not directly attacking him for things like his criminal acts. It’s not going to work.
Trump absolutely defines the gop at this point. If they wanted to avoid this situation, they should have impeached him rather than shielding his crimes and supporting his every move. Hell, their platform in 2020 was “Whatever Trump decides he wants to do.” They couldn’t even plan ahead by working with him. They said that they’d do his bidding. They normalized everything he says and does.
I don’t think they have a path out of this.
