Wait too long to fix it, and the extra heat generated will end up becoming an essential part of someone's workflow
So that's why it's so fucking slow and useless. Even task manager is slow in Windows 11, I mean how do you fuck that up?
Brought to you by the same company tripling down on AI use with their employees.
So checks out.
Do you even know how little that narrows it down? This even applies to Mozilla (Firefox) these days.
I was looking up how much RAM it would cost compared to a native WinUI 3 start menu in C++ and the difference is 20-100x for a hello world app. Having to load a JS and React Native runtime makes it load 150MB of RAM.
On a minimal freebsd setup you can run some graphical session in sway to monitor programs with top while activating vim's builtin autocomplete as ccls runs in the back and browse wikipedia using dillo to finally end with top showing a grand total of 145mb active ram. The entire OS is included in this.
Wtf microsoft?
My KDE install came to a grand total of 550MB last time I installed (KDE Neon at Plasma around 5.25 Ubuntu 22.04).
The guy that greenlit it to be done in React Native is dumb as a rock. OSs comes with a shared UI library for a reason.
145 megs is a lot NGL. You used to be able to do all those tasks (sans the autocomplete) on a PC with 64 megs of ram.
Increase of available resources lead to so many sloppy solutions, one of the things I hate the most about modern software engineering.
Current trend of shoving an llm everywhere is that on steroids. "No need to hardcode logic just MCP it bro"
In college, I was repeatedly told that optimization is a waste of time for the most part, and otherwise everything will run on servers soon with thin clients on the user side.
good jesus
Wait, they're running an entirely separate js interpreter?
Yeah, if they were trying to limit RAM usage they wouldn't have gone for React Native. The React Native runtime takes more RAM than the Hermes JS engine which is usually used.
The thing I don't understand is why they didn't use C#, it's like right there, first class support for the WinUI stuff and made by them.
the Windows API, being 40 y.o. at this point, is fairly efficient for a lot of simpler gui things. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_API https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/winuser/nf-winuser-messagebox .
maybe thats why it fucking sucks;
and that's on a enterprise version. can't believe my company keeps using this bullshit
That's what I was thinking too. I'm sitting at work hitting this fucking slow ass garbage operating system, it starts up then takes another 1 to 2 minutes to load startup apps (to be fair a lot of it is IT garbage)
Then I'm told my laptop has high end components, how is it not fucking over for windows already ?
How do people tolerate using this infuriatingly slow piece of shit OS.
Surely at some point people will agree that enough is enough.
I think a big part of it is that many people dont realize there are alternatives or dont understand the potential benefits those alts could provide.
Id heard of Ubuntu and Linux and such before joining lemmy, but it just seemed so irrelevant to my own experience with tech/my tech needs that hearing about their existence was the end of it. I imagine there are many, many other people who are, more than anything, just unaware that they could have better.
It's almost as if Microsoft decided to intentionally promote Mint
Windows 11 was legitimately the reason for me selling my RTX 3090 and buying a 7900 XTX as a replacement; just so I could switch to Linux head first.
Already on my 2nd distro, as while Bazzite was my preferred entry point - it was locked down to the point that I could not install PIA VPN.
So far, CachyOS has caused minimal headaches - none of which couldn’t be quickly solved with a search query.
Will see how I go getting VirtualBox up and running as Power BI remains one of those programs that I do need to use from time to time.
Wish I could do the same, but nobody makes a GPU powerful enough to replace a 4090.
Not even NVIDIA :p
yeah, I can see that if you want to install vpn software at the root layer you'll have not much luck - https://docs.bazzite.gg/General/VPN/ but they have wireguard and tailscale built in.
What was the. Context of that image again.
lol no joke that is actually true. and they talk about it with pride in here lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMJNEFHj8b8&t=275
that is a timestamped link but in any case it doesn't work, it points at 4:35
Oh don't worry, RAM is abundant and cheap! This excessive bloat will never be a problem!
their greed and laziness sickens me
Ah, it’s fine. RAM’s cheap.
Wait, what now? Oh. Oh dear.
Honestly a requirement even for 10 LTSC installs. Not sure how people run windas without it.
Classic Shell was great, made my life with Windows 8.1 a lot more manageable.
Why is everyone using catbot.moe? This website is so slow, that it cant load a single couple megabyte picture.
do you happen to be from Germany on a Telekom-Connection? Then the answer is Telekoms abysmal Peering routing you over some backwater 10kbit/s routes
They called me recently because I switched to a cheaper provider about a year ago, trying to win me back. When asked what I preferred about my current provider I said "the facts that I pay 10 euros less per month and that I can actually watch YouTube on Saturday evenings"
I've never had that issue with catbox, literally the exact opposite, on any account or VPN connection I've used. Easily have loaded hundreds of thousands of catbox links, both images and videos.
So much so that I look for those links over others when there are content mirrors because they have been more reliable from my experience.
It's much more likely your WiFi connection rather than the website itself
Free
odd, catbot.moe seems to be the best. loads instantly for me unlike weird twitter stuff or google stuff. though that's my trackerblocker
Bring back Program Manager!
Customizability used to be a strong selling point for power users. I guess Microsoft has just ceded the entire category to Linux, because they're probably their lowest-cross-sell customers-- more likely to use LibreOffice, to buy their own backup storage solutions, to buy Steam games instead of Game Pass
I always knew Stallman worshipped Chaos Undivided.
What's the context of the photo?
