Money talks. The donor class needed 8 dems to end the shutdown and turn on the money fountain again, and they got them. If they had needed 25 dems to cave, they would have gotten 25. If it was (somehow) critical to maintaining their wealth that 40 republicans vote for the "Trans and Immigrants are Actually The Best Bill", then 40 republicans will vote for it. Congressional outcomes have nearly nothing to do with voter preferences, you can look up studies on exactly how that has become totally desynced the last century, especially since Citizen's United.
Citizens United is where this country really went wrong.
If money is power, then capitalism is a form of government, and that is exactly what we see happening.
Country has been wrong a long time, but much more transparently so.
Can you do some leg work for us and link a study or 2?
This is probably the most famous one, all the way back from 2014! https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/abs/testing-theories-of-american-politics-elites-interest-groups-and-average-citizens/62327F513959D0A304D4893B382B992B
And here's an OK video on the study (more biased than the study itself but very easy to understand): https://youtu.be/5tu32CCA_Ig
And this study contains a lot of great links and references if you want to go deeper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0261379421001256
This guy gets the best healthcare for life. Fuck him and everyone who voted to end the shutdown.
Democrats are not your feiends. They are controlled opposition. I think this guy really has it right.
OK…so….I’ve been sitting here thinking I’m crazy for not understanding the democratic strategy and after watching that video it all kinda falls into place in my mind now.
Yep, its all so clear now.
I recall an infographic that I cant find at the moment. It showed congress as red, blue and purple over the decades, and he is spot on about the timing of congress splitting perfectly 50/50.
They just pussed out - didn't want Trump to end SNAP
And if anyone wants the see the CBC Massey Lecture he referenced:

That man speaks the truth.
The Art of the Kneel
Snatching Defeat from the jaws of victory, good ol' dems. Never letting a simple thing like success get in the way of the bullet they so badly want to marry to their foot
“My job is to keep the left pro-Israel.” -Chuck Schumer
The worst part is he didn't even join in the vote to own it. What a fucking coward.
Can't have a written record of being a coward.
Open enrollment for Health Insurance for my state assistance ends December 15th. This just let the Republicans win.
There will be a lot of families without insurance or with premiums with a 90% increase that families won't be able to pay because they just let it roll over year to year without checking.
Literally not working for us. They work for rich government contractors who want to get paid.
This is just a case of the right meeting the far right on the far right demands.
The Grand Old Party and the Controlled Opposition Party once again collude to fuck over everyday Americans after a very extensive Kabuki show.
Chuck Schumer joins Merrick Fucking Garland, as Americas greatest failures ! Useless fucking cunts, who sold out their country!
Schumer voted against the deal. Place blame where it belongs:
John Fetterman
Catherine Masto
Jacky Rosen
Angus King
Maggie Hassan
Tim Kaine
Dick Durbin
Jeanne Shaheen
These are the ones who caved.
Are people down voting because he voted to open the vote? I'm so confused, all of this is so damn confusing.
It's because Schumer worked to get this to happen, then bowed out at the end so he could pretend he had nothing to do with it. He was the architect and the driving force behind this capitulation.
So people are downvoting MiddleAgesModem for falling for a blatantly obvious attempt by Schumer to redirect blame.
Probably because it is naive to think that Schumer didn't approve or even push for the Democrats to capitulate.
People are downvoting because they're using this to fulfill their pre-existing hatred of Schumer. Even if it doesn't make any sense.
Aw Tim Kaine? He seemed cool when I lived in VA as a kid..guess he got bought up.
Like the others, he pussed out.
Schumer joins the republicunts in telling us to just lay back and let it happen...
You know... if I was a Russian disinfo gremlin desperate for something to pivot to after the whole "my name is Mamdani" spanking they just got I'd probably also be trying to amplify the whole "The Dems are cowards" messaging. Problem is that, thanks to years of their machinations, more people are actually checking sources and reading details now. Good.
No need for Russia to do or say anything in this case, Democrats did this to themselves
I was thinking the same thing.
I knew Schumer wasn't one of the defectors, but they've got his name right at the top.
He started the initiative by lowballing the Healthcare and these chucklefucks doubled down. If he had stuck to the plan this would be far less likely as an outcome.
As the top Dem in the senate it is his fault because he started it. Plus we are in this position because he did the same shit in the spring.
If Republicans pulled this shit on John Thune, he would primary the crap out of them.
What is Schumer going to do?
It IS his fault.
Chuck the cuck has got to go!
This dumb motherfucker. He's a Republican plant as far as I'm concerned.
In fairness, it wasn’t Schumer this time.
I call bullshit on that. He didn't personally cast a vote, but you can bet your ass this move emanated from the highest levels of the DNC.
He is the Senate leader, of course it's on him.
Not only that, but I don't think it's a coincidence that they're all either retiring or not up for reelection until 2029.
No way he didn't sign off on this. I wouldn't be too quick to let him off the hook.
EDIT:
Video: https://nitter.net/atrupar/status/1987874651209404646
He organized the vote, he secured the votes, he set the schedule and did everything to make it happen.
Don't be fooled because he voted against it at the last second. He's the goddamn senate minority leader, none of this happens without his oversight. They are treating the American people the same exact way Trump treats his base: like you're an idiot and can be fooled easily by pageantry and performatism.
It's still a democracy: a leader can't compel how others vote, only persuade, negotiate, reward & punish with committee assignments, leadership roles, campaign support, etc. Republicans can't compel everyone to always vote the same, either.
He handpicked democrats that they felt were "safe" and arent up for re-election in 2026.
This is classic DNC as controlled opposition. DNC and RNC are the same thing.
Its time for a new progressive party. Its time to go scorched earth and tank every election untill they not only allow progressives in the DNC but actually embrace them. I think its the only way to get reverse citizens united.
Senate Minority Leader Schumer
He’s either complicit in this scheme now that local elections are over, or ineffective at wielding the whip and keeping his caucus in line. Unless there’s a big public schism and this gang of eight get cut out, then he’s also feckless to boot.
I’m talking scorched earth retribution too, there needs to be a message sent and received to all in the party that breaking ranks for self-interest will cost them and their careers personally. Nobody gets to fold without consequence when the rest of your party’s elected members risked themselves and their position.
Maybe it's time some folks who haven't thought about going into politics to get in there. I don't know what to do anymore than strap up and put up..
The old guard needs to die or step aside. This includes Nancy "Insider Trading" Pelosi.
This decrepid old bastard needs to step aside. Or get shoved out of the way.

Not even going to credit the source? Lemmings suck ass.
These shitheads. They only had to do nothing, and they managed to fail at it.
After reading more about the deal, it's actually starting to look pretty smart.
They're only funding the government until January.
So all the stuff where the Republicans have to bring votes by December isn't a punt, because the Dems are keeping a loaded gun on the table. If the GOP fail to uphold their side of the deal, they can just shut the government down again, right away, with a clear and obvious justification.
The reality is, actually getting these ACA subsidies extended was never likely to happen. It has to go through a GOP controlled house, and Trump. But by holding out for an agreement to actually put it to a vote, the Dems have put the issue squarely on the GOP. They're gonna force them to either shoot down their package in the Senate, shoot it down in the House, or have Trump veto it. It'll fail in one of those ways, mark my words, not it'll fail in a way that is very obviously the GOP choosing not to stand up for regular Americans. And by extending the issue with the shutdown there's been enough time for people to start seeing the 2026 rates and really getting a picture of how this is going to hurt.
I think this is a solid win. The subsidies were always doomed, and I don't think actually extending them was ever the objective. I think the point was to force the GOP to kill them in a very public and obvious way where its clear who is holding the knife. This deal achieves that.
Edit: Strike the above. After understanding some more of the details, it's not looking nearly as smart as I'd first assumed. Leaving the original up to not ruin the continuity of the thread.
No, it is not fucking 4d chess.
Yes, we were always going to lose healthcare. trump only wants to destroy Obama's legacy.
But the Democrats chose the absolute most demoralising time possible to cave and still only used their sacrificial lambs who aren't up for reelection next year.
They uses the shutdown to win last Tuesday. Now they want to go home.
Selling today for tomorrow erases all the pain that was suffered for a promise to do the same tomorrow. Neither party is in our favor. Burn it to the ground.
This is 100% incorrect. Come January, if the Democrats try to drag their feet on funding the government again, the Republican fascists can simply pass a continuing resolution to override the Democrats and prevent another shutdown. Those eight Democrats just gave up the only leverage they'll ever have to bring back ACA subsidies.
(The reason the Republicans couldn't just pass a continuing resolution now to end the shutdown is that it can only be done once a year, and they already burned it on the Big Ugly Bill.)
Defeatism and capitulation haven't gotten us very far these past 10 months.
The majority of Americans (52%) blame Republicans for the shutdown and Trump's disapproval rating was up to 63%.
All they had to do was sit and wait. The heat was on the Republicans.
But no, let them off the hook like centrists always do. This country is in desperate need of a progressive wave.
The ACA subsidies are set to expire at the end of the year. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has promised a vote in December which, I'll tell you right now, probably means we aren't going to hear about this again in a meaningful way. You'll see reporting that the subsidies have expired and that's it. Sure this was likely going to be the outcome but there isn't going to be a dramatic vote where the public will lay blame on Republicans unequivocally. This shutdown was that opportunity for accountability and the Democrats blew it.
The vote in January only requires a majority vote which the Republicans can push through without any Democrat support. They have no incentive to work with Democrats for that vote.
What. You are overthinking this. I'm sorry to tell you politics in this country is far stupider and more evil than you have been led to believe.
We could have had not only healthcare subsidies but actual single-payer healthcare if the Dems had any balls or actual principles at all in the last decade and a half.
There is nothing smart about this, it's just greed winning out. Schumer was pressured with either promises of payouts or threats of discontinued payouts, so he did what he's fucking done before, he organized the vote, secured the individual votes, then backed out at the last second and voted against his own proposal so the accountability doesn't land on him.
Trying to rationalize that ACA was "doomed from the start" is capitulating with the vile fucks who want to take all our money and hard work and then let us die in the goddamn street. Fuck off with this 4Dchess coping. Fuck the democrats, fuck the republicans, fuck anyone who tries to tell people that there's anything good or smart happening in our leadership.
People are going to die while the donors dine in Gatsby-themed ballrooms.
You're projecting competence on people who never meet the moment
They're not going to fix healthcare in January. They're not even going start a fight over it. By January, open enrollment will be over, and the fight will already be lost
If they had just waited until Thanksgiving, they could have gotten anything they wanted. There would have been consequences, and the blame would be squarely on Trump
Now? This was all for nothing. Maybe Republicans gave up some ground on the off cycle elections... But all of this was to force a negotiation
Then, days after getting a seat at the table, they immediately fold. Hell, reopening everything until January might have been the opening offer
of course it would have happened
all the dems had to do was nothing
If it was a win, everyone would have voted for it. They would have declared victory. They would not have quietly done this on a Sunday with the minimum votes so most of them could have plausible deniability.
Just, no.
There is no master plan, there is no 3d chess, this is money talking.
The only way this works is if Republicans vote no in December. Then in January people start to see the massive increase in insurance directly taken out of their paychecks.
The dems then get to force another shutdown with more support because many Americans can only understand after something effects them directly.
I think they chose a bad time to do this, but here we are
This is why I reserve skepticism even for well reasoned posts.
You know... if I was a Russian disinfo gremlin desperate for something to pivot to after the whole "The name is Mamdani" spanking they just got I'd probably also be trying to amplify the whole "The Dems are cowards" messaging.
