Three of my parents are teachers. One of them is specialized for special education. Two of them have kids in their classes that are labeled as "sped". My little brothers who are early 20s have been using "sped" as a replacement for *removed* in their vocabulary as long as I can remember. Where my older brother and I would call each other *removed* my little brothers call each other sped. The term is used both by the youngins and the education system here in California.
