(the lemmy backend is in fact tracking karma but federated upvotes and general instability are fucking shit up a lot)

It's likely the same reason subscriber count numbers only count lemmy.world members who subscribe, not all subscribers from across the fediverse. Once I realized that, this place felt a lot less small.
