- www.rnz.co.nz 'A bit of a mission': Auckland's new food waste bin scheme causes a stink
If you're in Auckland you have already, or are about to, get a new bin to put out with your rubbish. Small green-topped bins are being provided to households for the collection of organic waste. Some residents are pleased, but for others the whole scheme stinks.
People are complaining about food scrap collection which is starting in Auckland.
My favourite complaint:
> "I think it is too small, and when it's full it's heavy.
It's too small, except when it's full then it's too big.

The FDS will guide where housing growth is targeted over the next 30 years and has a huge impact on the provision of housing and transport infrastructure. Submissions are open until the 31st of July.
This update proposes pulling back from some of the most wasteful greenfield expansions in the Northwest near Kumeū/Huapai and in the south between Drury and Pukekohe. These are the “Supporting Growth” areas where AT and Waka Kotahi have been investigating billions of dollars worth of transport infrastructure to subsidise sprawl.
Greater Auckland has an article out today summarising the strategy and changes https://www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2023/07/20/the-future-development-strategy/

We finally get bike lanes on Great North Road
www.nzherald.co.nz 'Perfect must not be the enemy of good': Great North Rd finally gets its cyclewayAuckland Transport has approved a controversial street upgrade in Grey Lynn.
I literally can not wait for this. Cycling there is so awful.
Suck a shame they don't do a town centre upgrade. The Grey Lynn shops could use some love.

Cycling + Train in Auckland
thespinoff.co.nz Why is it so hard to combine biking with public transport in Auckland? There are plenty of practical ways the city could make multi-modal transport more accessible – but have they all been consigned to the too-hard basket?
I've used the southern train into work in Newmarket a few times, but have found most days it's cheaper taking my electric Leaf, so do that.
Traffic on the southern motorway yesterday was the definition of horrific (2 hrs to Takanini) and I realized I could bike home in that time. The plan is to train in the morning and bike home in the afternoon (down Gt Sth Rd almost the whole way according to Google Maps).
Has anyone had personal experience taking a bike on an Auckland train, especially during peak hours? Ive looked up the AT website and it says ok, subject to space...
