  • There seems to be a trend of new (old) developers who find that strong typing is nothing more than a nuisance.

History repeating itself in the IT world. I don't wanna be around to support the systems that inherit these guys.

  • Rather than be used for war, they’ll be used for threats of violence and propaganda

Surveillance is the word you're looking for. Take all those NSA pipelines and run them through an AI and BAM, you've got your "terrorists".

AI will be downfall of our technological society, but not because of killer robots and malevolent systems. It's going to make everyone completely and utterly incompetent at everything in life.

  • IDEs need to be constantly updated to keep up with language / framework changes. Your subscription pays for that continued work.

If you really want, you can buy the 1 year and cancel after it's up - you get a perpetual license for the version you're on at the time it expires, but I really don't get why that would be a good thing.

  • They don't make docs like they used to. For what it's worth, those "...for Dummies" books were never going to make anyone an expert on anything, but every one of them I've ever read was the most densely packed set of comprehensible information on the subject available at the time.

  • 100+ million years qualifies as right in the middle of "for long" in my book. The fact that an asteroid or comet of biblical proportions wiped them out has nothing to do with evolutionary effectiveness. Most of the animals that did survive either A) lived in water or B) lived underground.

  • Reddit is a complete and utter shithole.

This. I've had a Lemmy account for a while but reddit suspended me yesterday for calling someone stupid - after they made disparaging remarks about someone else. Their account was untouched. I know because I saw posts dated after my suspension.

I don't know if Lemmy will work out or not, but Reddit has proven they're not fit to moderate any significant portion of the web's content and I can't be bothered to consume and contribute in that environment any longer. I submitted an account deletion request with an extra slice of my mind on the matter.

  • No, I think they mean "friends" sharing accounts.

In the grand scheme of things, do I think this is an issue? No. But it's their service to decide what amount of sharing is appropriate. As long as there is no ceiling to the storage limit, people will abuse it. That's all I get out of this - they're tired of people abusing the generosity.

  • The truth is that leadership world wide only values privacy when it's their own. Everything else is a big f'n show. Information is the single most valuable commodity on the planet and knowing your potential "opponents" is priceless. Maintaining power over others necessitates invading the privacy of others in the minds of 99% of people.
