  • The car argument is relevant because OK, you take a train from NYC to Seattle or some shit. It goes across thousands of miles. If you were to stop at a station to visit a relative along the way, you could get off the train and still be 3-5+ hours by car travel to that relative who lives in podunkville population 100.

We have an enormous amount of land that has very, very low population density. There are huge swathes that also practically have no to minimal population living there permanently.

I'm confused. Is your argument that mass public transit isn't realistic for students traveling to unis because a tiny % of the population lives in the middle of nowhere where it wouldn't be feasible to access by rail alone? Places where there universities do not even exist? There are towns of less than 10K people in the US that used to be serviced by rail back when they were even smaller than that (and some that still are). Look up a picture of the US freight rail map. Even without the insane subsidies that cars receive, the most extensive freight rail network in the world has been built in the US.

To your other point, I agree that the political will for public transit is not strong enough. I think that's a poor excuse to advocate for more car parking which will only make the situation worse.

  • I think you should watch this video: https://youtu.be/REni8Oi1QJQ

The US was built on rail. Almost every US city only exists because it used to be on a rail line. Most US cities used to have tram networks that were ripped out and paved over to make way for cars. LA, despite now being a sprawling car centric wasteland used to have the biggest tram network in the country. Rail is also just a far better solution to travelling vast distances than cars for many reasons, so I really don't understand why that argument comes up again and again. Who the fuck wants to drive from New York to California? I don't.

The reason for the dominance of cars in the US has way more to do with the power of the auto industry and the lack of political will than any real practical concerns.

  • When you don’t support any kind of parking you also make it difficult for people who have full time jobs or are continuing education as adults.

When you support more parking you ironically only make this problem even worse. Look up "induced demand." Not to mention increased tuition (avg cost of garages is in the tens of thousands per spot) and butt ugly campuses filled with parking garages.

The real solution is more alternatives to driving so that only the people who actually have to drive do.

  • Generally speaking people who need mental health help are going to be more easily discouraged by a negative interaction than the general population even if they can afford therapy in the first place. In the US at least there's also a shortage of therapists, meaning you might have to wait a long time to see anyone at all. And in my experience there are a lot more bad therapists than good ones (though assholes of this level are probably rare).

Honestly if it were me I'd just save myself the trouble, read a book on CBT and get some antidepressants. But that doesn't work for everyone.

  • I've only been able to get HDR to work properly in Bazzite's gaming mode

  • I use Seal on Android to download them but an actual frontend would be nice. There is Proxitok but none of the public instances really work anymore.

  • Yeah this sounds pretty believable to me there's a lot of shitty therapists

  • porting the google number requires a phone plan w carrier; but i only use prepaid accounts between multiple carriers that change roughly every 6 to 12 months or so, depending on the price and whether or not they'll support the unlock phones that i buy online. also: my current carrier will not accept a google voice number per their technical support people.

Why not just switch to another VoIP provider like jmp.chat then?

and those companies rely on some sort of multi factor authentication and my experiences with forwarding teaches me that the forwarding doesn't always go through in a timely enough manner.

I guess. I've never had any issue personally

  • I assume you're "voting with your wallet" which imo is not an effective or worthwhile endeavor. What manufacturer is so much better than Google that they're actually worth going with over a Pixel with Graphene? The only one that I can think of is maybe Fairphone, but it only works in Europe and the extra cost would likely be better spent towards a donation to a project like GrapheneOS than a mediocre device that is neither private nor secure nor degoogled.

my primary reasoning for an android alternative is to get out of google's walled garden

You don't even need an alternative OS to get out of Google's walled garden. You can and probably should start doing that before you move to an entirely new OS.

  • Well that sucks

  • ALL of the internationally branded phones i've had (mostly chinese) had compatability quirks with my aftermarket jvc head unit.

I would suspect GrapheneOS would be more likely to work than these, but you could always ask on the forum if anyone has any experience

  • there was also something wrong with them and some esoteric policy at the places i purchased them from wouldn't let me get a refund

Ebay has very good buyer protections - arguably too good, making things hard for small sellers. Virtually impossible to not get a refund within eBay's 30 day return period.

  • do you have any information on movement with any oems & graphene?

They've confirmed it's happening but likely not until later this year or 2027

eos looks the most likely to me

Don't use eos if mobile security matters at all to you. It's also not nearly as private as GrapheneOS and frequently phones home to Google.

  • ig, you could just buy used though or wait for their own device to be released via the upcoming OEM partnership. I wouldn't be surprised if pixels are sold at a loss or break even point anyway, supplemented by surveillance capitalism and google play store revenue.

  • The most that came from it was learning I had celiac disease

Well that is kind of a big deal lol. You may already know all this but celiac causes malnutrition as well as direct symptoms.

Iron deficiency from gut malabsorption can cause pretty significant fatigue, malaise, mood issues, and other problems. The criteria for determining what is considered iron deficiency have recently changed as well so that a LOT more people are considered deficient compared to before, and not all docs are up to date yet. Assuming you're an otherwise healthy person, you'd probably want to have a ferritin (iron stores) of at least 50 ng/mL but ideally around 100 ng/mL if you're symptomatic. There are several other vitamins that are commonly deficient in celiac as well.

  • Possibly, I'm not up to date on the latest research, but if so it hasn't made its way into the guidelines. The risks are significant based on my understanding so I would be surprised. There are selective estrogen modulators with lower risks but they aren't that effective for osteoporosis.

  • Isn't this a case for hormone replacement therapy? I thought physicians recommend it nowadays.

The risk of cancer and clotting with hormone therapy outweighs the benefit of preventing osteoporosis, so it's generally not used
