  • as one of the two non-computer scientists here, every time I check in there seems to be some load bearing open source project I've never heard of that's gone fash. "GreenBlox is refusing to kick out a contributor who said the jewish question should be on the table??" "PipeLinux official account is posting that pronouns don't exist?" open source people, are you ok?

  • what are some of the all time most ludicrous and/or bigoted lesswrong posts? i am starting a podcast where my cohost and i show each other shockingly weird or bigoted texts and discuss them. mostly we're doing historical ones but rationalist stuff is fair game

  • I think pumpkinware is catchy but that a more saleable story for the term is cinderella's stagecoach turning out to be a pumpkin

  • whenever there's a huge scandal he listens to his PR people, keeps his mouth shut, then goes on a media tour where he lies his ass off in exactly the same way at each stop. it's that simple and yet almost no other tech people can do it

  • incredible how he rushes to assure us that this was "a really hot 17 year old"

  • funny thing is she literally talks to ani like a terf talks to a trans woman including saying 'at least I'm a real woman'

  • what is "linear definitional bias"

  • pushy rationalist tried to glom onto and fly to meet my niche internet microcelebrity friend & i talked her through setting boundaries instead of installing this person in her life. my good deed for the week

  • genuinely think nostalgia might be the most purely evil emotion, and every one of these RETVRN ai videos i see strengthens that belief

  • he supposedly posted in a reddit ama many years ago that civ is one of his favorite games. since (1) it was a reddit ama and (2) i can't find any other time he's mentioned civ, i doubt it was him

  • According to The Information, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is planning to borrow $16 billion to invest in AI, and may borrow another $8 billion next year. The following points are drawn from The Information’s reporting, and I give serious props to Juro Osawa and Cory Weinberg for their work.

SoftBank currently only has $31 billion in cash on its balance sheet as of December. Its net debt — which, despite what you think, doesn’t measure total debt but rather represents its cash minus any debt liabilities — stands at $29 billion.. They plan to use the loan in question to finance part of their investment in OpenAI and their acquisition of chip design firm Ampere.

According to SoftBank’s reported assets, their holdings are worth about $219 billion (33.66 trillion yen), including stock in companies like Alibaba and ARM.

am I reading this correctly: softbank has $50 billion in debt, equal to about 25% of their total assets? is that... normal? these are genuine questions, not sure whether I'm misunderstanding something/whether this is actually usual

  • cringe

  • whatever. I'm just indicating you can turn it into a combinatorial game if you want

  • I think what makes it not impartial is that the white player cannot move black pieces (or vice versa). in an impartial game which moves are available is only allowed to depend on the game state, not on which player you are

the existence of stalemates prevents chess from being a combinatorial game at all, although I'm sure there are workarounds (I guess a lazy one would be to declare that white always wins stalemates)

  • First a correction (people keep saying this and it is a weird mistake) Grimes was his girlfriend, never his wife.

    whoops! edited

on my part I think it's because I keep seeing Elon described as having "divorced energy"

(I recall a story of a university with a beloved, genius but somewhat odd professor to which the students looked up, they wanted to be like him. So eventually the students started to touch the walls when walking through the halls, as the professor also did that while walking, the cargo cult).

side side note I was friends with a former military intelligence guy and he told me the mathematicians in his facility were nicknamed the "finger draggers" or something like that because some of them had that habit

  • it isn't a p2w mobile game and I see no reason to believe he's achieved any level of expertise in it

  • I hope you have, tho I suspect he only plays against sycophants
