    Is Amazon not a middle man? In many cases you're buying directly from the seller, just like at a farmer's market. Amazon, like a farmer's market, exists to facilitate trade between sellers and buyers. It just collects rents.

    The cost of putting the market together is always going to be higher than selling out of a van. Bigger venue, higher costs. It's worth it for the increased sales, but the middle man still gets a cut. Even if there's no profit, even if the cut is fair, there's still a cut.

    A farmer could set up a stand outside their driveway and advertise on Facebook, but the farmer's market middle man acts as a go between to handle logistics and advertising and customer availability and creates a safe marketplace for customers and vendors.

  • Not printing money is also bad for existing money. Deflation is a very bad thing.

    It's supply and demand, and supply creates its own demand. That's why the US economy grew so fast and became the reserve currency after it got off of the gold standard, it no longer had to be constrained by the limitations of gold and could just print whatever it needed. As long as there is demand, the supply can grow. When the supply grows, demand grows with it.

    You can't just print infinite money, but it's a lot looser than you seem to think. There's plenty of money left.

    They just hate their citizens and want them to suffer.

  • You might train yourself to not hold on to suffering, and not react to suffering, but the suffering still happens. It's not like monks are emotionless, unfeeling stone. They feel the suffering, acknowledge its presence, and then let it go like water off of a duck's back.

    Which is all fine and good for them and their extensive training, but it'd be absurd to say that everyone has this capacity from birth.

  • Yugoslavia evaporated the instant the USSR wasn't around, they needed them to provide an umbrella from the West and without that buffer they imploded violently.

  • I think SocDems had a historically progressive role in the hyperreactionary landscape of the US. Before Bernie, "socialist" was a pejorative. Now it's a lot more complicated, we can actually talk about socialism now without being written off and liberals are calling themselves socialists to win elections. Also, in Iowa especially I can use Bernie getting ratfucked out of the race to pull people away from Dems, because they so obviously destroyed the caucus to hand a win to a loser nobody like Mayo Pete.

    They've outlived their shelf-life, though. Mamdani is now actually to the right of where a lot of USAmericans are on police and on Israel; he holds progress back every time he pointlessly compromises with Democrats and the NYPD and the Zionist lobby

  • One of those laws of development being dialectics - repression creates resistance, resistance creates repression. If we're being repressed it's because they need to repress us to sustain the contradictions, and the very act of being repressed radicalizes the repressed. It is an irreversible trend: more repression, more resistance, more repression, more resistance, etc etc. Nothing I can ever say to my family at Christmas will ever them to turn against the ruling class, but the actions by our ruling class absolutely can.
