/u/outwrangle before everything went to shit in 2020, /u/emma_lazarus for a while after that, now I’m all queermunist!

  • Mueller enlisted for Vietnam

Anyone who would volunteer for that war is a fucking monster.

  • Their existence is at risk as long as the US has military bases in the region.

  • They could ally with China and replace their oil/gas dependency with electrification.

    But they won't.

  • Love to be in full Sun while doing work 🙄

At least have an umbrella or something?

  • If democracy means anything at all, it's a system where the people rule. By your loose definition, every country is a democracy! Every king and dictator has enormous propaganda machines because they need to keep their people from overthrowing them.

The Gilens and Page study gave the game away in 2005. "The preferences of the average American appear to have only a miniscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy." Policies are decided by the ruling class before a single vote is cast, the elections are simply another propaganda machine to trick people into giving their consent to be governed.

And right now the propaganda machine is telling you to just wait for the midterms and everything will be fine. You don't need to do anything! Just sit back and relax, the system is working as intended, everything will work out. "Democracy". What a joke.

  • Carey says autocrats try to co-opt or pressure government institutions that serve as referees but notes that didn't work last month as the Supreme Court ruled against the president on tariffs.

"One of the things that the tariff decision suggested [is] he has not fully captured that set of referees," said Carey, a professor of political science at Dartmouth, "and that's the most important set."

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of what's actually happening.

They ruled against Trump's tariffs because this is a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie and he isn't allowed to touch the money. Trump is a figurehead that's being granted power by the ruling class, he's only allowed to do what he's doing because it's useful.

The US was never a democracy. They just let us pretend because it was similarly useful.

  • Well. They think they're white. Whiteness isn't just something someone can identify as, it's a condition imposed by white supremacy and it's contingent on the political moment. A lot of leopards-eating-faces moments come when they find out that their whiteness in Colombia is non-transferable to whiteness in the US. If the white supremacists decide having English as a second language or having a dark-skinned grandparent makes someone non-white then their skin color won't actually protect them.

  • They chose not to change their tools to comply with the new Pentagon demands. It's the Pentagon that then decided to cancel contracts and declare them a "supply chain risk" in retaliation. Claude is still integrated into their systems and it'll take time to switch.

  • The difference between an hour walking and biking is easily 10+ miles, not exactly negligible if you have somewhere to go.

  • I got that burger thing.

    I got that walking thing.

    I gotta lotta things.

    I'm at the Burger King.

  • To be clear, this has nothing to do with retribution or acting as some kind of warning. Rather, there's the simple fact that leaving them alive left them the opportunity to retake power and control. Every moment of massive political upheaval needs to address the problem of what to do with the losers, because if we don't, they recuperate and strike back at the political project.

If you overthrow the King and let the King's family live, monarchy can come back.

If you overthrow slaveocracy and let the slave owners live, slavery can come back - and it did.

  • I think an argument can be made that this is actually the 2nd Republic; there was a civil war, after all. The 1st Republic from 1776 collapsed under its own contradictions and was an absolute failure based on those original principles. Reconstruction didn't go far enough. There should have been a new Constitution, rather than trying to amend the shambling corpse from the 1st Republic. There should have been mass executions for all former slave owners, but instead we let them live and they reestablished themselves in the sharecropping system with the Klan.

Let's not make the same mistakes in the 3rd Republic.

  • I favor the theory that Trump can't tell the difference between news he's seeing on Xitter and actual broadcast news, because the broadcasters have been extremely generous towards the regime for this war and there basically isn't any dissent from them

  • Why the fuck are you talking to me like that? Why can't we just have a discussion without the personal attacks?

Patriot missiles are running low, and when those run out intercepting missiles will get much harder. How do you think that happened? Maybe I'm just a stupid worthless piece of shit, but it sure fucking looks like Ukraine depleted the US's stockpile.

  • ... no I think that's actually the first of your worries. You need to find a new job, which means you need to work on your resume immediately. This is something you should start thinking about now because we're basically in a recession.

  • Same. My anxiety about doing the task wrong is so distracting that clear instructions helps sooth the symptoms.

  • The US only stopped sending aid last year, that doesn't give it enough time to recover from the $70 billion in hardware it already sent. It's also continued selling weapons to Ukraine even as it cut back on aid, as well as pressuring NATO to ramp up its purchases of US weapons (which are then going to Ukraine anyway), which still depletes the stocks.

As for it not mattering, the US has demonstrated they're willing to strike civilian targets. I'd say it matters to Iranian civilians if the US has less capability of blowing up their hospitals and schools because it has already exhausted itself.

  • If you got laid off how would you even apply for another job? Write up a resume on your phone? Sounds like a nightmare.

  • They helped deplete the US's munition stores and now they're in a much worse position to fight Iran.
