In late 2024, Israeli lawmakers approved a ban on UNRWA in Israel over disproven allegations that some of its staffers were Hamas members who took part in the October 7, 2023 attack. Those accusations led to numerous nations suspending financial support for UNRWA, although most of the countries have since restored funding. Israel has also sought to ban UNRWA from Gaza since early 2024.

Israeli forces have killed more than 370 UNRWA staff members since October 2023 and destroyed or damaged over 300 of the agency’s facilities in Gaza. Lazzarini and others have also accused Israeli forces of torturing UNRWA staffers in a bid to force false confessions of Hamas involvement.

It found that the Israel Prison Service (IPS) introduced a separate, sparse menu for “security prisoners”, which is used to describe mostly Palestinian prisoners, leaving many malnourished.

Released prisoners told media outlets and rights groups that meals sometimes consisted of a tiny portion of undercooked rice shared between several inmates for an entire day, while others went days without food.

The report described the resulting hunger as “severe, manifested in extreme weight loss and associated physical symptoms, including extreme weakness and fainting”.

Since I left Gaza in November 2023, my life has been defined by visa rejections and endless hours waiting in airport lines. I watch people behind the counters staring at my Palestinian passport with confusion, often having to “call for help” just to process it.

I’ve learned to explain the details automatically: “My name is Plestia, Rana is my mother’s name. Yes, on Palestinian passports, we include our mother’s name.” One rejection after the other; I am stuck in Gaza, I am stuck outside. Where are #Palestinians supposed to go? We are pushed out of our own land, then met with locked doors everywhere else.

A Weakened Hamas Still Dominates Gaza, Building Day by Day

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/40050390

A cease-fire after two years of war with Israel has allowed Hamas to tighten its grip on power again. “It’s still standing,” one Israeli official said.

[Bias alert - NYT usually favors Israel]

Over two years of war, top Hamas commanders and thousands of fighters have been killed, and the group’s arsenal has been severely depleted. It now controls less than half of the territory in Gaza, with the rest occupied by Israel.

Yet Hamas has managed to reassert its power in Gaza, according to Israeli security officials and an Arab intelligence official.

This swift regrouping presents a formidable obstacle to the Trump administration’s plan to reconstruct a Gaza free of Hamas. [yes!]

  • Today I will create a crude little video using my phone with the announcement along with a screenshot. That should do it. Thanks for the ideas. :-)

  • I post videos that are already created elsewhere, so I haven't created one except for ones I've taken with a phone camera.

  • Thanks, sounds like a good idea. I created a single PNG with the announcement and then tried to convert that to a webm using 3 various suggestions I found online, all involving ffmpeg. All failed. Any suggestions?

Murray: ICE dog attack on WA man ‘should shock the conscience’

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/40006019

    from Seattle Times
    Dec. 6, 2025

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., is calling for the immediate release of a Clark County man whose attorneys say was mauled by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement dog despite not resisting arrest.

Undercover immigration officials detained Wilmer Toledo-Martinez, of Vancouver, Wash., outside his home on Nov. 14. An ICE agent pretended to be a construction worker, claiming he had hit Toledo-Martinez’s vehicle and needed to exchange insurance, luring the family out of their home, according to the senator.

Another agent was waiting for Toledo-Martinez outside, releasing a dog that then mauled him, according to his attorney. As of Saturday, Toledo-Martinez, was being held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma.

In North Carolina, Michigan, and Minnesota, local campaigns have notched divestment wins totaling more than $27 million.

Across the country, JVP chapters and our partners are organizing to demand their state and municipal fund managers divest from Israel Bonds — essentially investments in Israeli genocide and apartheid — and invest instead in the well-being of our communities.

This organizing targets the engine enabling Israel's violence against Palestinians: material support from our own institutions in the U.S. And the momentum is growing...

How do I notify followers/subscribers to a PeerTube channel?

I created a video channel on a PeerTube server, but its service quality is poor, so I have migrated everything to another server. The first server' channel is still open, but I have a migration notice on the channel's home page.

The problem is that I have 8 followers on the old server whom I would like to notify directly. How can I do that using my PeerTube handle?

I tried to follow my PeerTube account from my Mastodon account, but it shows "Pending" in Mastodon. When I go to my PeerTube account, I don't see any place for messages, requests, etc.

Any documention or suggestions for me to look at? Thanks.

  • Thanks. I thought I had a valid archive, but I clearly didn't.

  • Thanks for responding. Could you send a screenshot of how and where you get to that? I have explored quite a bit and haven't found that. Thanks.

  • Reuters has begun a paywall, and I didn't know if a direct link would encounter issues for the readers.

  • What specifically are you talking about? The people mentioned in the article are true right-wing Jew-haters, not defenders of Palestine. And the publication has a consistent record of anti-Zionism.

  • Did you try the archive link in the comment section? It should be working.

  • I've been reading a lot of articles from 972, and I don't see evidence of that. Do they explicitly call for the destruction of the Zionist state? No, but that doesn't make 972 a liberal Zionist rag. (In fact, their latest issue explicitly takes on liberal Israelis on the Gaza genocide.)

If you have some examples where they took bad positions on something concrete, please send them to me. I could be wrong.

  • Yes, but there was an archive link below.

  • I don't understand your logic here. Clearly, the kid had problems that were not caused by ChatGPT. And his suicidal thoughts were not started by ChatGPT. But OpenAI acknowledged that the longer the engagement continues the more likely that ChatGPT will go off the rails. Which is what happened here. At first, ChatGPT was giving the standard correct advice about suicide lines, etc. Then it started getting darker, where it was telling the kid to not let his mother know how he was feeling. Then it progressed to actual suicide coaching. So I don't think the analogy to videogames is correct here.

  • That was not my headline, it was the publication's headline, which was quoting from the Israeli officer. Yes, I didn't like it either, so I just removed it from the main headline and replaced it with the one from Haaretz. I can't fix the subheadline.

  • You're welcome, thanks for letting me know!

  • Well, thank you for writing that! I really appreciate you taking the time! And I'm glad that you like them. :-)
