  • For simply productivity like Copilot or Text Gen like ChatGPT.

It absolutely is doable on a local GPU.

    Source: I do it.

Sure I can't do auto running simulations to find new drugs and protein sequencing or whatever. But it helps me code. It helps me digest software manuals. That's honestly all I want

Also, massive compute projects for the @home project are good?

Local LLMs runs fine on a 5 year old GPU, a 3060 12 gig. I am getting performance on par with cloud ran models. I'm upgrading to a 5060ti just because I wanted to play with image Gen.

  • Which is funny since that does solve a lot of the problems.

If it's completely open source at least.

Like OS data sets and model that can be ran locally means it's not trained on stolen data and it's not spying on people for more data.

And if it runs locally on a GPU, it's no worse for the environment than gaming. Really the big problem with the data center compute is the infrastructure of getting that data around.

  • That's crazy.

Anyways I'm gonna pitch never buying a Samsung phone again to the HR people if this comes true.

  • I am a fan of LLMs and what they can do, and as such have a server specifically for running AI models. However, I've been reading "Atlas of AI" by Kate Crawford and you're right. So much of the data that they're trained on is inherently harmful or was taken without consent. Even in the more ethical data sets it's probably not great considering the sheer quantity of data needed to make even a simple LLM.

I still like using it for simple code generation (this is just a hobby to me so Vibe coding isn't a problem in my scenario) and corporate tone policing. And I tell people non stop that it's worthless outside of these use cases and maybe as a search engine, but I recommend Wikipedia as a better start almost Everytime.

  • I was honestly impressed with the speed and accuracy I was getting with Deepseek, llama, and Gemma on my 1660ti.

$100 used and it was seconds to get responses.

  • I am personally a huge fan of taking advantage of wealthy people.

You don't really have iPhone 16 pro Max and Air pods money to throw away like this without having a one sided relationship with labor, in my opinion.

But that's my cynical leftist view.

I imagine the biggest reason to not keep it is fear of your son getting spoiled or demanding gifts from you that are this same caliber.

However, he is 16. Certainly not the most rational age for many people, but he can understand the difference in financial statuses between you and his friend.

I think it would be distressing for you to take away this expensive thing on the grounds of "we're too poor to have nice things" especially since it was a gift from his best friend. But having that discussion of "hey don't let that get to your head. I still love you I just could not afford such an expensive gift. Here's a vague breakdown of our expenses"

My dad had a similar discussion with me when I was getting ready to go to college the first time and he flat out told me how much he and mom made and broke down where the money goes. It really helped me understand our economic position instead of just assuming my parents made a good amount of money (they didn't)

  • From your user name to the link joke.

This is a real master piece

  • Amazing.

  • This man will repair your car in such a way it will both never break and when you do go to a normal mechanic for something they will gaze upon it in awe and horror.

  • My avatar is also partially AI generated. I GIMPed the Zizek face from one of his movie posters though.

I'm used to people calling me out for the Zizek part and that hasn't happened on Lemmy ever lol.

  • New Player: "My Wizard casts fireball targeting the king!"

Me: "Actually that doesn't happen y-"

NP: "Did a hidden wizard cast counter spell! I can-"

Me: "No I just won't let you do that. Try to ruin our game again and I'll ban you from the discord."

    Np: "Oh."

  • I'm a fan generally of LLMs for work, but only if you're already an expert or well versed at all in whatever you're doing with the model because it isn't trust worthy.

If you're using a model to code you better already know how that language works and how to debug it because the AI will just lie.

If you need it to make an SOP then you better already have an idea for what that operation looks like because it will just lie.

It speeds up the work process by instantly doing the tedious parts of jobs, but it's worthless if you can't verify the accuracy. And I'm worried people don't care about the accuracy.

  • Personally I'm a huge fan of the Alcoholics Anonymous understanding of "god" and I think it applies more widely.

In AA it is supposed to be A-religious so as to accommodate as many people as possible. To them, god is whatever higher power you need to put your faith into to do better. An entity who you are striving to make proud or you are asking for guidance or help, etc.

This genericized god idea kinda gives up the game to me as an atheist, but it doesn't mean it's bad. In fact it's made me believe in god as an idea.

There are plenty of studies on "manifesting" goals and how saying out loud to yourself or to someone at all substantially increases your chance of succeeding in your goal. This is just prayer or a magic spell or whatever else you wanna call it. I call it a ritual.

The fact that god is a made up idea has been uncontested in my mind for eons, however the psychological power of a belief in god is new to me and makes me appreciate the systems of religion more (doesn't excuse a lot of their bullshit).

  • I wanted an apartment with a balcony but they're all $500+ more a month in rent then I'm already paying.

  • "Drive backwards on the track"

That's literally the first thing people do in racing videogames. That would have been SECONDS

Yes it was way better than watching him play Atari Joust for 30 minutes but still!

  • I wanna see the flight scene in one of those shops now where someone gets embroidered during the fight.

I also work with industrial embroidery machines (not directly, we just have them at work) so I know the like 10 seconds under a needle wouldn't be enough time to do anything really, but I'm imagining a room full of machines making military name strips, hero blocks a goons punch and shoves his hand under a needle while the goon yells in agony. Camera focuses on how horrified face as he lifts his hand to reveal "Maj. Payne" embroidered across his hand. The goon then faints.

  • I download the YouTube tutorials I followed, upload them to my UAT Jellyfin server, and then when my server is having issues I can't get to the videos!

    A flawless system really

  • Yes you have. They're just better about it.

I've met so many mother daughters, including my own mother and grandmother, who just alter their own name a little bit instead of going for a "Junior" type deal.

For instance, my Nana's name is Elizabeth but goes by beth. My mom is Eliza Beth-Ann but goes by Eliza or Liz.

(Also yes I'm from the south)
