  • I hope I never become so befuddled that pushing one chat bubble icon instead of the other is confounding.

I don't understand how some people who are ordinarily reasonably smart just turn into subhuman intelligence when faced with a new computer thing.

My dad is quite elderly and he manages to run ubuntu fine. My mother, on the other hand, gets confused and angry if anything changes at all on her phone or laptop.

  • I'm so tired of every job posting frothing at the mouth over AI. "We're ai native" , "we want employees who are excited about ai tools", "agenic workflows"

    Just fuck off.

Even if all of this stuff was a real productivity increase, who is keeping that extra production? Not the workers!

  • I see a lot of ads for ai slop on the subway and I refuse to engage with them. I don't look them up. Fuck 'em.

Sometimes people vandalize them and if I saw someone doing so, I don't know what you're talking about.

  • I use nano for quick edits. I don't know more than the basics of vim, and don't do a lot of editing on the terminal so I haven't needed to.

  • Still on Linux. Updated to the new pop!_os LTS. It's been pretty good. The new desktop environment has had a few quirks where I had to fuss with hitting alt+enter to get some games appropriately full screen, but generally it's been good.

Worth it to be free of microslop

  • The original oblivion was bad.

    Current Microsoft is bad.

    This is not surprising.

There are better games to spend time with.

  • Copyright of that length is garbage. 14 years max. Make new work like everyone else.

(Or do basic income for everyone so people's needs are met. That's fine too)

  • Another way I'm a little insufferable but like... yeah the pandemic and quarantine sucked, but I read a lot of books, played a lot of video games, had a great online DND game.

Some people just seem so helpless and inept. They'd be like "I just need to see other people" and I'm like please develop some discipline.

  • I do a lot of rice and (canned) beans, which is pretty cheap and satisfying.

I don't have any experience with lentils. My parents never had them because , the story goes, the last time they did my father farted himself out of the bed.

  • Cars (well, the car-first infrastructure in most of the US) is already a pretty effective forment nexus.

  • Stop making people commute when they could work from home. That's hours wasted on top of climate crime.

  • Cool. Fuck cars. Take transit in NYC.

  • They could pay people to check, but it's more important that they spend billions on slop and executive bonus.

  • Fuck Spotify. I'll buy albums (drm free, mostly from Bandcamp), pirate, or go without.

Today is bandcamp Friday, too. Bandcamp passes their cut on to the band.

  • It's kind of funny that because most of us are nice, no one just beat the shit out of trump or worse. Assholes are kind of like parasites taking advantage of kindness.

  • Power yields only to power, so yes, that's one option. Ultimately it's going to come down to "Play nice or we're going to shoot you", and it's a question of how many layers of politeness soften the threat.

  • I had a conversation with a coworker a while ago where he was like, "Well I just wouldn't buy the swill milk."

I was like, "How would you know??

The utter hubris of that kind of person thinking they're going to like spin up a whole chemistry lab to check the quality of everything they buy. The insanity of thinking that's a good world to envision.

  • I feel a little guilty by not skipping work entirely, but I have the legal minimum of paid time off. So I'm technically on the clock, but I'm not doing any work.

  • Sometimes I make a conscious effort to think about what I would say to someone else in my situation. It's helpful.
