  • Welcome to the club!

  • Yesterday I decided to write some notes for language learning by hand, I realized I did not remember the last time I wrote anything by hand

  • I really wish we stopped linking users to random niche distros, its just much more common to run into bugs due to less users.

  • We will just like all these issues before, A new generation of artists will rise and see the use in them, while a new generation without the prejudices of the previous will consume. Everyone complained about how digital art "isn't art", literally the computer IS doing most of the work for you, computers are complex machines and something as simple as drawing pad goes through layers among layers among layers of abstractions made my the work hours of hundreds of engineers. But we agree the artist was the person using the drawing pad no? People complained about photography the same way. The world is flooded with horrible hip hop beats over copy pasted sample packs over 808 VSTs, we all agree now that this is all art, the people at the time did not.

People confuse the playing an instrument and illustration as art, when art is much more complex, vague, and interesting idea than that. All forms of human production carry some artistic value, we simply value things where the production process feels less alienated than others (Carpentry vs factory work)

  • It genuinely astonishes me how regressive people turn about AI in art, its like I'm talking to Bill O Reilly complaining about modern art.

  • lol I can imagine decades ago people cheering for songs that use sampling to no longer being allowed on a site. We really never learn sigh.

  • You can do a harry potter thing where the workers want to be slaves

  • The mind of a right winger can not be comprehended by mortal minds

  • Paying back the national debt one phone at a time, thats the TRUMP difference

  • Maybe this is true at smaller companies or old ones but the wlb as you go up in tech usually just gets worse, Finance it like starts really bad in IB but gets passable as you go up (like 60 hours a week). Alot of this is inflated by time people just doing nothing but saying these directors are not stressed seems laughable. My mom was one and as a kid it was noticeable how much she was constantly stressed about work when she was at home or on the weekend (On the weeks she did not work over the weekends lmao). When she retired it was like night and day. Upper management is like Game of Thrones without all the death

You can argue that this is just a byproduct of Capitalism and top down hierarchies and alot of the work was not really work and we should tear it all down (I agree mostly). But your other solution is bottom up hierarchy (basically using representatives, I wouldn't say running government is exactly chill???) or just no hierarchy (Only viable if we all live in self sufficient communes which is pretty based),

Also mentioning caffeine is kind of funny, thats like the tip of the iceberg, these execs and finance bros are all doing coke and meth or some other type of stimulant. All I do is design computer systems and yell at claude to code them faster. Obviously theirs alot worse jobs than being a exec its def on the upper end of the distribution, wouldn't call it easy imo

  • Ah Art of the deal, See this is why im not president

  • 5 years is crazy, even Elon companies don't make you wait 5 years for a vest

  • I think Elon is kind of the exception he posts on twitter way too much to be doing any real work lmao. He's essentially a brand guy and all his companies try to keep him away from the real work (I think he wanted the spaceX rocket to use Windows?????)

  • I feel like we are not thinking authoritarian enough. In the end computer production is centralized, no one is making hand crafted artisan laptops. If the gov says all computers need to be backdoored, all ISP's can only have devices with hardware attestation running on their networks, what do you even do?. The infrastructure for networking is all monopolized too. Like we could have some sort of onion routing over a mesh network, but the government can just make that network illegal to run.

  • Well in 1934 we had book burnings. Have you considered an LLM burning?

  • In 2040s do we just move our brains into our own self hosted data centers?

  • Does piefed image proxy by default? I noticed the homepage for lemmy.today is really heavy since the proxy'd images seem to be full resolution. I ask this since that thread is about people saying piefed runs smoother they said image proxy is by default on lemmy due to CSAM issues. The network utilization blogpost also seems kind of disingenuous since it puts equal weight on the network utilization on javascript, image compression, and a bad api pattern by the lemmy dev. Through those are issues it seems like its 99% you guys more heavily downscale the images vs lemmy.world (Though I like your guy's solution better).

Do you also manage the piefed.social servers? What kind of cpu/bandwidth/memory utilization do you guys run for the instances serving the api gateway, am curious about the infra setup in general.

  • Ive never paid for a bank transfer, and we have zelle which works. The reason is Interchange fees for credit cards are high (like 3%) and not capped, banks offer high rewards, sign on bonuses, travel perks etc. using a combination of interchange fees and interest paid. People are drawn to these even if they are losing money in the end due to paying so much interest (people are not financially literate). On the other hand high earners who are smart want to use credit cards for these perks, so alot of high earners will not shop at a place if a credit card is no available, essentially banks, VISA, and high earning yuppies have created a wealth redistribution system that preys on people who take on debt.

  • The EU caps interchange fees iirc so its not as profitable for VISA. We did the same for debit cards in the USA which is why credit cards became even more pushed
