  • Compared to MPs expenses scandal, or Farage's undeclared £5 million (plus his dodgy house buying tactic) and their denial of wring doing or even why people might have an issue each step of the way him owning up, accepting responsibility and paying what's owed and the fine is very much "paying his fair share".

    Could he do better? Yes, of course. Is he doing better that most non-Green national level policians? Seems to be.

  • Your are indeed technically correct (but I maintain that as the worst kind of correct, who trusts bureaucrats?), but the added information that that section details as once/if women married, their finances, assets, bank accounts became their husbands.

    So while unmarried and widowed women could do banking, meaning that women could - social pressure and expectations made it difficult to impossible for the majority of most women's lives.

    You are correct in the bar of "a certain subset of >1 women could open bank accounts" was true for, potentially the entire history of banking in the US/thirteen colonies. (When was the first settler bank set up in N. America? Probably a Spanish one in the Caribbean, but British people probably didn't use that one.)

    We are mostly in agreement, just drawing the line either when first crossed (fair and valid) or when all could cross (racial discrimination aside (and that's a big aside)).

  • If you're using "Tragedy of the Commons" as a synonym of Holocene Extinction, and are not talking about the way common land (i.e. The Commons) in Medieval and Early Modern Europe was managed, then sure I'll concede the point.

    But that was pre-Captialist, and similar things can be seen when we look and the surviving indigenous societies in the world. It would, indeed, be harder in areas that have been living under capitalism for the last five to six hundred years.

    You seem to be analysing from a fairly traditional Marxist-Leninist lens, albiet with a novel definition of state. No bad thing, but there are other Left wing frameworks that bring interesting, alternate understandings.

    But that's seen as having no impact on holding strong, negative, stereotypes about other ethnicities and cultures.

    And tends to be, in many cases followed up with "it's not a prejudice/racism, it's a fact!" =(

    Sadly there's a lot of anti-African, anti-South East Asian, anti-Japanese & Korean, anti-Turkic, antisemitic, sentiment floating around in general in the PRC.

    1862: First state (California) allows women to open bank accounts regardless of marital status.

  • I think the first runs afoul of the Tragedy of the Commons.

    The real "Tragedy of the Commons" is that it's a myth made up by Capitalists to justify their enclosure of common land and divesting those without land from their rights to self-sufficientcy and access to resources.

    The Commons were generally well managed for hundreds of years by convention and local communities.

    If you don't have a state, or local proto-capitalists, with the violence to take possession of the commons, they remain well shared and not over-exploitated.

  • Better than the US is not a high bar to clear.

    The PRC has gotten better in the last 15 years, but was also pretty poor before that, and still enacts environmentally catastrophic colonial extractavist projects in South East Asia, similar to Europe and North America in Africa and South America. (Though none as catastrophic as my homeland has been in West Africa.)

    I hope that the PRC can keep to it's trajectory, while reducing the harm done in South East Asia, and then in a few years can be better environmentally than all 1st World Nations.

  • Denigration of the lumpenproleteriat... Those most excluded from the system are best able to imagine life beyond and outside it and build support networks not based in capitalism.

    Putting (some) of the workers in charge of the means of production doesn't solve the problems, it merely ameliorates them for a while a new ruling class emerges from the revolutionary vanguard while switches places with the previous ruling class.

    The racism, or at least prejudices and a lack of understanding that cause racism, are very real.

    Asia benefited from being near the top of the racist hierarchy of lies that Europeans instituted in the 19th century and also mostly learn about Black people from Hollywood films. (There's also a really odd trend of New Right and crypto-fash talking points getting popular and spread around Chinese social media.)

    In China at least, dating is seen as valid only in the path to marriage, and family and kids is an expected and socially impressed upon goal. To the point where plenty of women in China have kids they don't want because of familial and social pressure.

    At the same time, Asian society is very colourist which combined with having ingested the racist hierarchy somewhat and only really knowing Black people and culture from Hollywood isn't a great start.

    Rounding it off, I China at least is a desire for in group marriage. Foreigners are seen as a risky choice, who could leave and don't share the same cultural values (regardless of the truth of it).

    White people get more of a benefit of a doubt, but there's still pressure against a Chinese-White relationship. I've heard of plenty of families putting pressure that ens inter-ethnic relationships, and there is definitely more pressure against Chinese-Black relationships. (Both cases also, sexistly, exacerbated when Chinese women, foreign man.)

    Don't think this is anything new or not know, sadly.

    If the family is supportive, things work a lot better - unsurprisingly. But with Asian value of family, if the family are openly against it, it's very unlikely to work out.

  • Yup, competing factions in power on both sides of the relationship could knock things about.

    Vikings were amazing, we (or at least I) still often underestimate or forget their reach. The idea of Vikings in the Middle East and North Africa trading and marrying, and generally being part of the flow of goods, people, and ideas always seems wild.

  • We always used colonisation for European imperialism in my history classes, but I can see how the word doesn't fully jive with expected meaning.

    And we tend to use "neo-colonial" at least in my experience of British education for the US imperialism, too.
